Mamdani rallies with socialist slate and Sanders, declares open challenge to Democratic Party leadership
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani stood on stage at Kings Theatre in Brooklyn's Flatbush neighborhood Thursday night and told a crowd of progressives that the Democratic Party as currently constructed cannot win a presidential election.Six months into his tenure as the nation's most prominent democratic socialist mayor, the 34-year-old wasn't hedging. He was picking a fight, with his own party's leadership, with its donor class, and with the incumbents House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries wants to protect.
The rally doubled as a campaign event for three progressive congressional candidates Mamdani has endorsed ahead of Tuesday's New York Democratic primaries.
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders headlined alongside Mamdani, and the message from both was blunt: the Democratic establishment has failed working people and needs to be replaced from within.
