When Dana White became UFC president in 2001, the sport was radioactive.

Sen. John McCain had spent years calling it "human cockfighting." Las Vegas wanted nothing to do with it. White was watching doors close when Trump opened one – the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City gave the UFC a legitimate stage at the moment it needed one most.

"Nobody took us seriously," White said later. "Except Donald Trump." White spent the next two decades paying that back.

He introduced Trump at the 2016 Republican National Convention when the entertainment world was sprinting the other direction. He stood by publicly through the impeachments and the felony convictions.

On election night 2024, he told the crowd at Mar-a-Lago: "This is what happens when the machine comes after you."
