Fetterman wants NFL Security upgraded for the NFL Draft

Fetterman presses DHS to boost NFL draft security in Pittsburgh amid Iran conflict

Sen. John Fetterman is asking the Department of Homeland Security to raise the security designation for the 2025 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh, citing the ongoing military campaign against Iran and the massive crowds expected to fill the city's open-air venues later this month.

Fetterman sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who recently replaced Kristi Noem, urging the department to upgrade the draft from a Level 3 to a Level 2 Special Event Assessment Rating, or SEAR. The Hill reported that the Pennsylvania Democrat framed the request around what he called "the changing threat environment in the wake of the war in Iran."

The draft is scheduled for April 23, 25 across multiple sites in Pittsburgh, including Point State Park, Acrisure Stadium, and the North Shore. Fetterman's letter noted that the event marks the first time since 1948 that the NFL has brought the draft to Pittsburgh, and the expected turnout reflects it.

In his letter to Mullin, Fetterman laid out the scale of the event in plain terms:
"This is the first time since 1948 that the NFL will host the Draft in Pittsburgh. It is expected to draw well over 700,000 fans to open-air events in Point State Park and Acrisure Stadium, and more than 50 million viewers are expected to tune in to watch the Draft on television or online."
