Speaker Johnson raises $500,000 to oppose Virginia Democrats' redistricting ballot measure

House Speaker Mike Johnson traveled to Great Falls, Virginia, last Saturday to headline a rally against a Democratic-backed ballot measure that Republicans say would let the state's ruling party redraw all 11 congressional districts mid-decade, transforming a narrow 6-5 Democratic edge into a lopsided 10-1 supermajority.

After the rally, Johnson attended a private fundraiser and pulled in $500,000 to fight the amendment, the Washington Examiner reported.

The special election is set for April 21. The stakes, by any honest accounting, are enormous, not just for Virginia voters but for control of the U.S. House itself.

Former Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin joined Johnson on stage in Great Falls. The two framed the amendment as a brazen power grab designed to lock Republicans out of representation in a state that, even in 2024, gave Democratic nominee Kamala Harris only a roughly 5-point margin over President Donald Trump.
