One of the most hated figures in America's political history, McCarthy managed to be despised by everyone. He also was an alcoholic, a womanizer and embraced conspiracy theories. Great guy.
You were pretty young then Lynn. I don't think he was well liked by anybody but jingoists. My parents were Republicans, and they didn't like him at all.
McCarthy exposed the communists in our government. Ethel Rosenberg and her husband gave confidential information to the then Soviet Union on the atomic bomb. We were at odds with the soviets at that time...still are for that matter. They were convicted of espionage and executed. The government took care of spies back in those days. As far as mostly "going after jews" that can't be verified. There were some who were communists and exposed.
