As I live in a condo built in 1966 & built like Ft. Knox, cement and rebar deteriorates over time. It is something to always have inspected. This building was reportedly on the ocean so it takes more of a beating.

Miami Building codes were toughened up after Hurricane Andrew and everything we do today has to use their building guidelines. Per Google, Florida Building Codes: The law creating the Florida Building Code was enacted by the Florida Legislature in 1998 and became effective on March 1, 2002.

Then there is the 40 year mandatory engineering inspection that was enacted into law within the last 10 years. I wonder if that had been completed.

@2:08...they were in the process

And to think there are Thousand year old buildings in Europe.

I hate to say this, and I have nothing to base it on, but the Inspection itself, could have disturbed the rebar which was the last thread holding it together.

Hopefully, this will speed up the required inspections on these old hi-rises.

It's just so horrible. 90+ people still missing.

Building was sitting on land reclaimed from the ocean. Ocean takes back. It was sinking a tiny bit each year. Unwise.

@12:04 then it affects all of those buildings there as they were all built on landfill

Building on reclaimed land is done all over the world. That's what China is doing with those islands in the South China Sea. All of Dubai is reclaimed land. St. Petersburg, Russia is reclaimed land.

This is something else. You can't neglect a building. It will turn around and bite you.
