“This environment can be very tough and caustic and it takes a unique person to deal with that. It’s common knowledge Lake Worth has a lot of issues that make it dysfunctional and it takes time to fix that.”
~ Michael Bornstein
City Manager of Lake Worth
talking about the firing of his latest Finance Director.
Mr. Bornstein has had 3.5 years to get this city functional. His idea of getting the city "functional" is his attempt to have the voters pass the general obligation bond that would have had property owners in debt for 34 years, going against the Heights Charter Amendment by not codifying the win with Tallahassee and going into a secret ITN process to negotiate away our casino complex/beach. And it is he who hired the last two financial directors.
Recently terminated Finance director, Nerahoo Hemraj, was certainly qualified--

We had Steve Carr for several years but wait, he was hired by Stanton, the CM Maxwell fired, along with Triolo and Amoroso.
Those qualifications for the newly fired finance director speak eons about what is going on here. Wasn't there another comment about this gentleman under the other heading by "11:03" stating that our finances are more complicated than a "convenience store?" ??Attempt to discredit this gentleman i.e. Since he has an accent and darker skin, well-- he must come to us strait from management at 7/11?? It does indeed take a unique person to deal with a very tough environment where honest accounting will get you fired. Especially if you DARE to reassert the numbers when Scottie boy takes issue with this. Honesty obviously not on his agenda for the beach. Let's remember what was front and center on his agenda: a 5 year contract and $10,000 raise for Bornstein. Now he's getting his payback from Bornstein? Some of those "issues making us dysfunctional" and slowing their plans down are likely voters like me who want open and honest government in the sunshine. Do they intend to fire all the voters who don't dance to their tune?
The problem and why the City is dysfunctional is because of the City Manager, Michael Bornstein, he cannot manage. An example is the Casino, the removal of the Tree in front of Too-jays. his dislikes of audits, his consistent secret meetings from the public with his favorite commissioners and the Mayor, his use of the City Attorney for his dislike and refusal to enforce City Election Results. It is time to recognize Mr. Bornstein is the PROBLEM.
Point by point from the other side:
His idea of getting the city "functional" is his attempt to have the voters pass the general obligation bond that would have had property owners in debt for 34 years.
Roads and sidewalks and water mains and sewers left deteriorating for decades. Come up with a comprehensive plan to get ALL the work done in a short time. Offers it to the voters so that they can take ownership of it. Voters turn him (them) down narrowly.
going against the Heights Charter Amendment by not codifying the win with Tallahassee
Our City Attorney advised they do not let the vote go forward for the same reason, it would be against State Statute. If it had failed at the polls, it would be a moot point. However, it passed and therefore went against the State Statute and could not be codified. Someone was going to file suit to force the issue but for some unknown reason dropped their legal effort. Hmm.
And finally: going into a secret ITN process to negotiate away our casino complex/beach.
Not secret. Brought up in public meeting to put commissioner on committee. Sour grapes as McVoy was not picked. Again trying to get SOMETHING done to counter the piss poor design putting a 5K square foot restaurant upstairs where NONE had existed before. Four years on the market, OCEAN FRONT and only getting an offer of $3 per square foot above CAM. I'd try something else too. Good thing you all stopped these three major improvements to our city. Now sit back and whine.
Yes, we hear you, Mr. B. You give away our stuff because you can't fix it. The rest of the stuff you wrote is off the wall. It doesn't matter that mcvoy wasn't picked to be on the ITN. No one knew what it was really all about. As far as everyone, we thought it was about finding a tenant for the upstairs. Get a broker who can do the job for us. The last one SUCKED.
Heights you lost. Yes, you lost the heights vote. Bond you lost. ITN you lost. Steve Carr you lost.
Yes, Lynn, 3 1/2 years and a recent raise and he has the nerve to tell the Post reporter that Lake Worth is dysfunctional. It's outrageous that he denigrates the City of the taxpaying homeowners who have committed to Lake Worth in a way that he never has.
A renter in Lake Worth, he accepts a salary to do a job for which he has proven himself incapable.
Instead of firing a competent employee, it is time for him to resign for making a public statement which indicates his own callousness and incompetence.
When does this administration take responsibility, how many years have to pass before they own the dysfunction? 3 plus years on the job seems like long enough.
If they vote out the invocation, they really are dysfunctional. There won't be any doubt. Whatever happned to all the polls they were going to have from their web site?
whats dysfunctional is the people you work with --they have no clue how to run a city-amorrosso needs extra money, thats why he ran---scott has had job for yrs because no one else wants it(he will drink to that)others who ran to get gulf stream hotel pay backs but failed--then you have the mayor, who can't get anything done, while crimes go up--pot holes grow-- more rehabs opening--criminals running businesses downtown, that are fronts for how they really make their money---and the class of people you can see for yourself-----thats why they still call this city lake worthless after all these yrs----we don't have educated people running a city and never have
who doesn't know lake worth is dysfunctional---where the hell has everyone been----drunk or on drugs because that is what has taken over---lake worth downtown is a bad circus act gone really bad
And, this city is more dysfunctional because this city manager MB will not listen to the public, call us back, show he cares that we are important as citizens. MB has been a huge disappointment to our city and its great people. We need a CM that will listen to the people and assume some responsibility for his leadership, which he has not. He is a fake and a huge kiss up. We all deserve better than a horrible city manager like this.
Gets a 10-15,000 raise plus addes benefits and still pokes at the city? Great Leadership here, haha! Not only is he completely HATED by every employee now the Public seems to be joining the bandwagon.
Either way Bornstein wins... If he stays he continues to be hated but makes $140,000 a year salary & if the comission votes him out the city has to pay out his 4 year extended contract which is $560,000 so sadly he wins we all lose :/
$145,000 salary.
His 5 year renewal contract that is unheard of, was initiated by Maxwell and given on a 3/2 vote from the dais: Maxwell, Triolo and Amoroso. They love him. Many do.
The dysfunction is Bornstein. Would we still have to give him his half million if he had a vote of no confidence for lack of fiduciary responsibility i.e. firing financial director for honest accounting and refusal to lie?
The City looks like it is being lead by a "dysfunctional group of leaders". Did you see the letter in the LW Herald? Our streets and roads are a mess and all they can focus on is the commerce park area. Get real! Who would even want to come there after our seeing the condition of our City. I agree, Bornstein is a dysfunctional leader, along with the majority of the commission. Get rid of them!
Under Bornstein's watch, street sweepers were out cleaning clean streets all through the spring.
Now that the streets are overflowing with fallen autumn leaves, the sweepers are nowhere to be seen.
Another example of his failure to oversee anything except his corrupt vision.
how can the mayor help the city when her own business is failing and she can't do anything about it
i don't think born stein can make a decision--he can't even make his mind up about his true sexuality
listen no one else will take city manager position--because they know nothing gets done in this city and last 15yrs shows me personally---i have seen nothing much in last 15 yrs-except the crime and types of crimes getting so bad its just a matter of time a major incident happens
