Sober Houses SB 582

Comment Up

Florida lawmakers, one of whom is Jeff Clemens, are seeking rules for "sober houses" that are allowed to be in our residential neighborhoods. According to the city manager, we have three such requests for housing for the Homeless in residential neighborhoods, many of whom are addicts. These sober houses will house addicts and alcoholics and/or the mentally ill. Those clever landlords who want to take over properties to make a living off of the government and the American taxpayer under the pretense of helping these poor folks, could be locating right next to you. There had better be laws that protect all of us. Crime is up and some of the Homeless are involved.

Jeff Clemens is also sponsoring medical marijuana that is a drug that leads to harder drugs. 99.9% of cocaine users began by using marijuana. See Foundation for a Drug free world.  Marijuana is addictive. About 1 in 6 people who start using as a teen, and 25-50 percent of those who use it every day, become addicted to it. Perhaps when that bill passes, we will have more marijuana/addicts living next door to you.

But the housing will be regulated, a sobering thought.

Of course the City could enforce its short term rental law which would keep these houses out, but Comm. Scott at the Parrot Cove meeting re the sober house said the City had no plans to do so.

Thanks for nothing Commissioner and City.

Yes, and then we have rich famous people who can improve their places and avoid our city laws. The city officials said yesterday that property owners are only supposed to be allowed to have their property boarded up for a year, then need to rehab or demolish. Yes, some rich people are allowed 15-20 years or more to keep their blight boarded up for the rest of us to look at in this city for the rest of our lives. Shame on the rich and famous who use their power to keep our city blighted and unattractive, they have the money, just refuse to spend it or follow our laws using their power and name to get around our laws. It is all very sad.

It's getting so bad, we have a neighbor renting out her "guest" houses by her pool just for this very use...and the government agencies are paying her well for bringing these derelicts- shooting guns off- into our neighborhood and community. You should be ashamed Ms. "Know it all"

Charming little white house on Federal Highway and Second Avenue south has 20+ losers (addicts, cons) packed into it hanging out all day. Why work? These halfway houses are seriously degrading our nice community. For Pete's sake city commission forget about painting flower pots pretty colors and GET ON THIS! Get these guys out of our neighborhoods. Send them back to mom.
