"I want teeth."
Vice Mayor Scott Maxwell
Businesses that violate the right-of-way laws in Lake Worth have been a problem for years and the city has allowed them to operate without penalty. Not any longer. William Waters, Director of Sustainability along with the 'yes' vote of 4 out of 5 commissioners (McVoy dissenting), has enacted new ordinances that will require vendors to be licensed and operate within the law. The same thing goes for those businesses in our downtown that have sidewalk cafes. You let them have an inch of sidewalk space and they want the entire walk.
Vice Mayor Maxwell has said he wants a law that has "teeth." We agree. It is time to end the "I will do what I want" attitude that some businesses have and who continually show contempt for our city and undermine legitimate businesses. Also, all merchants must now apply for a new Sidewalk Cafe Use Permit. If a business has renewed under its old permit, it will be given credit toward the new permit. Strict code enforcement will begin next Friday, December 20.
Read the Palm Beach Post article on Lake Worth wants to crack down. We hope that it is more than just a "want" but rather a "will" crack down.
