Dr. Joseph Morrissey, Lake Worth High School Alumnus

His 1981 graduating class yearbook from Lake Worth High School said that his ambition was to “get rich quick and spend a lot of money.” He was a swimmer all four years at school.

He was only 46 years old when he was shot to death, murdered in his home during a home invasion on Tuesday. His body was found on his back patio. He lived in a quiet part of town in Plantation living the American Dream. As a Nova Southeastern University assistant pharmaceutical sciences professor, he had spent his career trying to find a cure for cancer.

His wife was tied up as well and one report had her shot and another said that she was uninjured before the house was doused with gasoline and set ablaze. She and Dr. Morrissey’s 5 year old child managed to escape.

Why his home was targeted or why anyone has to die at the hands of some creep is a mystery and disturbing. Anyone of us can be at the wrong place at the wrong time but you always believe that your own home is safe. Police feel now that it might not have been random.

Police have a suspect in this senseless horrible murder of Dr. Morrissey whose American Dream was ended on April 6, 2010.

Sorry to read about this tragedy. Joe was my college roommate at USF that I lost track of since leaving USF back in the 80s. He was a great student and dedicated swimmer for the USF team. Very sad to read news of his death.
