Republican Senator Confronts Anti-Trump General in Explosive Exchange
Republican Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana did not hold back during a tense exchange with retired Army Major General Randy Manner at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday. Kennedy confronted Manner about his past criticism of President-elect Donald Trump and his supporters, asking him if he considered himself “more virtuous” than everyday Americans.Kennedy brought up Manner’s comments during an appearance on CNN’s “Laura Coates Live” in October where he called Trump’s supporters “fascists themselves.” The senator asked Manner if he believes he read the quote accurately, to which Manner confirmed.
Manner, who was testifying against using the National Guard to assist with deportations of illegal immigrants, claimed he was not there to discuss his personal views. However, it was clear that Manner had been an outspoken critic of Trump and his supporters prior to the hearing.
Kennedy then pressed Manner about his comments, asking if he thought he was smarter and more virtuous than the American people. Manner denied this, but Kennedy persisted, pointing out that Manner had also endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris during the presidential campaign and had even called Trump a “fascist” during an appearance on “Morning Joe.”
