New Jersey Democrats stage Memorial Day spectacle at Newark ICE facility — and DHS isn't having it
New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill showed up at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Newark on Monday and was turned away at the door. Homeland Security called the visit a political stunt. Sherrill called it oversight. The facts suggest something closer to theater.Sherrill, a Democrat, arrived at Delaney Hall on Memorial Day alongside Sen. Andy Kim and Reps. Rob Menendez Jr., Nellie Pou, and LaMonica McIver, all Democrats, demanding access to the facility amid an ongoing detainee hunger strike and days of protests outside. ICE denied them entry.
A DHS spokesperson told The Hill the visit was "nothing more than a political stunt on Memorial Day when visitation is currently suspended due to riots outside in the facility."
The timing and circumstances tell a story the governor's press releases leave out.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin denied on social media that any hunger strike was taking place and said the facility did not have "subprime conditions." He accused the New Jersey Democrats of "smearing ICE law enforcement."
