Former President Joe Biden reemerged this week to reassure the public he’s “feeling good” after revealing an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

But it wasn’t the diagnosis that stole headlines. It was his offhand joke — “You can see that I’m mentally incompetent, I can’t walk” — followed immediately by a claim that he could “beat the hell out of” his critics. The sarcasm was unmistakable. So was the bitterness.

And for most Americans, so was the underlying truth.
