Liberal City Gets Dose of Reality After Raising Minimum Wage to $19.50/Hour

If you were an employer in Portland, Maine, you were likely not ringing in the New Year with nearly as much gusto as the rest of the country.

At 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 1, the minimum wage in Portland jumped to $19.50 per hour, up from $12.15 the day before, the National Law Review reported.

The hike, which the Wall Street Journal (and anyone else with a lick of sense) called "destructive," was triggered by a city ballot referendum approved by Portland voters in November 2020. The measure will raise the minimum wage in stages to $15 by 2024 and was already going to make the minimum wage $13 on Jan. 1.

In 2020, Florida voters approved of raising the minimum wage.
Employers must use the following hourly minimum wage schedule for non-tipped employees:
December 31, 2020 – $8.56
January 1, 2021       – $8.65
September 30, 2021 – $10.00
September 30, 2022 – $11.00
September 30, 2023 – $12.00
September 30, 2024 – $13.00
September 30, 2025 – $14.00
September 30, 2026 – $15.00
