US Troops Stuck in Country, 100 Million Airbase Abandoned
The Biden administration’s foreign policy in Africa has faced yet another setback, this time in Niger, where Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Molly Phee’s actions have led to a major diplomatic crisis.Phee’s visit to Niger in December 2023 was followed by protests calling for the removal of US forces from the country, highlighting the deterioration of relations between the two nations.
Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine publicly accused Phee of using threats and condescension during negotiations regarding the presence of US military personnel in Niger.

- They will leave the $110 mln airbase built a few years ago from which the US has been running its drone operations against AQ & ISIS
The situation was exacerbated by a lack of clarity and direction from the Biden administration, leaving deployed soldiers unable to fulfill their duties effectively.
