"I'm going to make this happen for this man," says Mark Parrilla

Compassionate residents work to help Navy veteran struggling to stay cool amid dangerous Florida heat

Mark Parrilla who used to live in Lake Worth and was president of the Genesis Neighborhood Association was featured on Channel 5.

A GoFundMe was started to help buy a U.S. Navy veteran a new home after his story was featured on WPTV.

Alexander Jenkins said he planned to sleep outside on Tuesday night in an RV Park in Okeechobee because he said his trailer is too hot.

The National Weather Service has issued multiple alerts due to excessive heat in Okeechobee County and other regions across South Florida.

Mark Parrilla, who organized the fundraiser, said Palm Beach RV donated $24,000 toward a 40-foot, five-wheel RV valued at $34,000. He hopes to raise the rest of the money on GoFundMe.

George Floyd PROTEST in Lake Worth (Beach)

Group of protesters gather in Lake Worth Beach, 2 people attempt to burn American flag

"A group gathered Saturday afternoon at Lake Worth Beach City Hall to protest the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police.

During the protest, two people pulled the American flag from the flagpole, tore it, and attempted to ignite it in front of the CVS near City Hall.

Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office deputies retrieved the destroyed flag and will dispose of it with a proper burial. Why didn't those who stole our flag and then burn it get arrested?

The crowd departed City Hall, moved down Lake Avenue, then traveled to Bryant Park." [WPTVChannel 5]

What was advertised as a "vigil" for George Floyd, is mentioned in the WPTV article as a "protest." I can't understand the mayor lending her name to such an event but can certainly understand Mark Parrilla as being a part of a protest.

"Clean up the neighborhood" says Activist

Mark Parrilla wants a Lake Worth Beach neighborhood cleaned up

Mark is a former recipient of the Lake Worth Hero Reward and the only one to receive it as the city commission never had the ceremony again. Why they discontinued it is the mystery as we have a lot of residents who get involved.

Mark used to be the president of his neighborhood association (perhaps he still is), Genesis, but now lives west of our city. His mother still resides here and he wants the city to clean up the neighborhood. The city continues to have excuse after excuse why we have so much slum, blight that breeds crime, something the commission never discusses. Residents are sick of it.

Mark Parrilla issues first Grant to needy recipient

Beverly Bracken
Recipient of first Leocadia Fonseca Community Improvement Grant

Mark Parrilla, President of the Genesis Neighborhood Association, was at City Hall Tuesday night to present Beverly Bracken with the first award of $1,209 toward an air conditioning system.

Beverly is disabled and has been living without air conditioning for 13 years. Mark was pro-active and immediately upon learning of her blight after he arranged a clean-up of her property, took action. Those involved in the Grant decided to award the $1,209.00 from the Leocadia Fonseca Community Improvement Grant (named for Mark's beloved and late grandmother), to Ms. Bracken as the 1st installment for a brand new central A/C system.

Those on hand and major contributors were Kevin Van Kirk of Banyan Printing as well as Eric Ortiz, Project Manager of E.D.S. Air Conditioning & Plumbing of Lake Worth, the company that will be doing the installation.  If you want to contribute to Mrs. Bracken's a/c, please go to Go Fund Me

Lake Worth and Solar Energy

Lots of talk about solar in Lake Worth and many residents spoke to it at the last regular commission meeting.

Ten years ago, Mark Parrilla and his partner installed solar at their house on South A Street. They believed that it would be paying for itself in just a few years. The solar installation was $55,074 not including the rebate from the State for $20,000 and the 30% tax credit they  received from the federal government on the original cost.

The Electric Utility Advisory Board could not meet recently as there was no quorum. Peggy Fisher, a prominent member of this Board, resigned last month.because of lack of support by Staff and their decisions bypassing the Board.

Commission Meeting 5-7-19

The meeting lasted all of 1 hour and 36 minutes. As usual, the meat of the meeting was all on the Consent Agenda involving over $2.6 million. Also, there was a resolution No. 16-2019 authorizing a State Revolving Fund Loan for replacement of water mains in Lake Osborne Estates...a community actually not located in Lake Worth (Beach) in the amount of $7.5 million. Zero discussion.

No one on the commission thinks it's important to ever discuss what they slap on the consent agenda--never informing the public about any of it even though we have asked them to consider those who are actually picking up the tab...their bosses..

Mark Parrilla was there last night with his family and gave an update on the Genesis Neighborhood Association. The grant funding he had previously set up in the amount of $1,209 is in memory of his grandmother, Leocadia Fonseca. Last night, he just received notice of a second grant. One of his big goals is to have a community center in the Genesis NA.

If you want more information on applying for a grant and you live in that neighborhood, go to the Genesis NA web site. Applications will be accepted through July 3 and the winner will be announced on August 3.

Lake Worth Commission sets the tone of its public meetings

Comment Up

Once again, we are getting a story from a reporter that never talked to the subject of the story, Commissioner Ryan Maier. There are always two sides to a story--the truth and the other side who think they know the truth or make it up, twisting it to suit their agenda. Knowing the circumstances of the incident would be too much investigative reporting I guess.

The other subject of the story is the mayor allowing all of this rudeness to happen. When you have threats made by some who speak at the lectern during commission meetings, raise their voices and are just plain obnoxious and the mayor does not bang the gavel, then it is all bad politics and purposely taking retribution against citizens and well as other commissioners.

When you have a person walking by and shooting you the 'bird," you have "rude punk" personified. Jeers and constant chatter in the room is allowed by Pam Triolo. This sort of behavior (not the bird) happens with frequency.  The mayor does have Rules of Decorum that she totally ignores.  Saying "Quiet in the chamber" doesn't cut it.

Some people are chronic trouble makers in this city and we all know who they are...even the PBSO.

Mark Parrilla sent the following:

Subject: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

 Regards,

Mark A. Parrilla

The big laugh, in the end, is on the City of Lake Worth. But this e-mail shows the mentality of some in our community who disparage free speech and the right to a different opinion.

Lake Worth Hero

Comment Up

My head is spinning
Our only Lake Worth "Hero" is back in the swing/spin of things.

Now his Genesis Neighborhood Association, that is not sanctioned by the NAPC, is having a one-sided non-democratic affair and has invited the three incumbents to a rare association meeting. In order to get good attendance, he is offering a FREE DELICIOUS DINNER and it WILL BE SERVED. Opponents running for the March 15 election are not invited.

Now we know why he is NOT a member of the NAPC.

NOTICE OF
CITY COMMISSION ATTENDANCE announced on Lake Worth's web site:

Please be advised that one or more City Commissioners may be attending the Genesis Neighborhood Association’s Quarterly Meeting at 6:00 PM on February 26, 2016. The meeting will be held at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, located at 928 South E Street, Lake Worth, Florida.

The purpose of this meeting is to provide community update and ask questions concerning residents living in District 1. This meeting is open to the public.

Peace Initiative Day - Some would rather stir the pot

Comment Up

Pastor Mike Olive of the Common Ground Church reached out to Wes and Mark in a gesture of friendship and love as well as to be a compassionate listener. They were invited to come over to his coffee shop yesterday which was Peace Day. But they were both "no shows."

A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control. (Proverbs 29:11, NIV)

James 1:19-20: "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires." (NIV)

I guess Pastor Mike's invited guests did not want to hear those messages.

"Peace" cup offered to Blackman and Parrilla

Comment Up

You all have heard of a Peace Pipe but this is a Peace Cup offered to two individuals who continually attack pastor Mike Olive and his church as well as those who attend. Hope that they both take him up on the coffee clutch at the Common Grounds Coffee Bar. Everyone needs a little spiritual help in their lives not to mention a good cup of java.

Stop the Hate - Message to Wes and Mark

UPDATE: Below
 Comment Up
An Open Letter to Wes Blackman and Mark Parrilla:

Stop the hate!

With the tragedy that unfolded last night in South Carolina, I could not help but think of how Dylann Roof’s heart became so full of hate. Perhaps he had people around him who only spoke hate to him. When hate fills a heart, words become toxic and they have the ability to contaminate everyone around. Hateful words have within them the ability to cause the simple minded to act out.

Wes, Mark, your words are like a match and I pray that they do not ignite a tragedy in the Lake Worth you say you love so much.

Stop the hate.
Pastor Mike Olive
UPDATE: Mark Parrilla's reply: Mark Anthony Parrilla 8 hrs · This is an email we received from the self proclaimed Pastor and owner of Common Grounds Coffee Shop and make shift church. Wes and I have been compared to a psycho racist killer. That is and all new low! I guess his maligning our city on national TV wasn't enough, he now wants to go after people who care and do so much for the progress of our city. There is no hate, I have initiated a boycott of his coffee shop after he lied about one of our code inspector's that works very hard to clean up our city. It is growing I now have 26 Lake Worth residents who have pledged to boycott his business.

Message from Margaret - The Lake Worth Tribune

Comment Up

In case you didn't see Margaret Menge's comment on my blog yesterday, this is what she says about The Lake Worth Tribune--

Hi Lynn, Thank you for your support of the Tribune. I wouldn't say that anyone with the city directly caused the paper to shut down. Newspapers are a tough business. They're expensive to produce, and you have to sell a lot of advertising to cover costs of news gathering and production.

It wasn't nice of Commissioner Andy Amoroso to tell businesses not to advertise in the paper. And it was wicked of Wes Blackman to tell people to steal stacks of my papers and for Mark Parrilla to do it. But ultimately, it was my task to make the business work. I needed to put together a better sales team, and to focus more on the business, and less on the journalism. Of course, as a journalist, this would be hard.

Many people have told me they would like to help bring the newspaper back. And I think there is a possibility of this. Certainly, this town is big enough to support a weekly newspaper, if not a daily paper. And there are plenty of small newspapers all over America that make it work. So stay tuned.

Thanks,
Margaret Menge, Editor and Publisher

Rules of Decorum out the window with this commission in Lake Worth

Comment Up

The mayor and this commission has not followed the Rules of Decorum.  I have spoken about this on several occasions--have written the mayor, city attorney and the city manager.  What occurred in the city chamber on Tuesday night by a volatile resident who is well known in the judicial system, was an abomination to all decency.

When you have senior citizen James Addison, well known resident from a pioneer family, getting thrown out of the chamber for using the word "shit," Mr. P should have been stopped dead in his tracks before he was allowed to continue with his 2 minute hate speech/rant, directly threatening unnamed citizens with his vile and intense promise to inflict retribution (he succeeded in his mission to get someone fired from her job and bragged about it) on those for something offensive that only exists in his own  "mind" on legally unproven "he said; she said." He says he won't accept hate in our community but by his acts, he is committing the most hate of all. He has mentioned the names of his targets on his Facebook page and a few are senior citizens one of whom is 80 years old.

It has been a trend of this commission (no other has allowed it) to allow citizens to make personal attacks towards others in this chamber and these attacks have become more brazen. We want to know when the commission, especially the Mayor, will follow its own rules and insist on civility.

415 RULE 14
DECORUM FOR CITIZEN PARTICIPATION

(a) In support of and respect for an open, fair and informed decision-making process, the
City Commission and Administration recognize that:

(1) Civil, respectful and courteous discourse and behavior are conducive to the
democratic and harmonious airing of concerns and decision making; and

(2) Un-civil discourse and/or discourteous and inappropriate behavior have a
negative impact on the character and productivity of the decision-making process.

(b) In an effort to preserve the intent of open government and maintain a positive
environment for citizen input and Commission decision-making, the following Rules of
Decorum for Citizen Participation have been established.

Compliance with these rules is expected and appreciated. The Rules of Decorum for
Citizen Participation will be included in the agenda and will be referenced at the beginning
of each Commission meeting and Commission Work Session by the Chair. A written list of
the Rules of Decorum for Citizen Participation will also be printed and mounted upon the
walls of the Commission Chamber and Conference Room and upon the speaker’s podium
in the Commission Chamber.

(1) Speakers will conduct themselves in a civil and respectful manner at all times.

(2) Speakers will address the Chair.

(3) Questions to Commission members or City staff will be facilitated by the Chair.

(4) Speakers will refrain from the use of obscene language, “fighting words” likely to
incite violence from the individuals(s) to whom the words are addressed, or other
language which is disruptive to the orderly and fair progress of discussion at the
meeting.

(5) Speakers will refrain from making comments of a personal nature regarding
others.

Pg 35
(6) Name-calling and/or obscenity is forbidden.

(7) Shouting, yelling or screaming is forbidden.

(8) Commission Work Session or Public Hearing attendees (audience) will refrain
from commenting, shouting, booing, clapping, stomping feet or other
inappropriate and/or disruptive behavior. Brief clapping is permissible at the end
of a speaker’s comments.

(c) It is the intent of Commission to maintain order and enforce the Rules of Decorum for
Citizen Participation for its meetings. Disregard of these rules will be met with the
following consequences:

(1) The Chair will identify out loud the out-of-compliance behavior and request for the
behavior to stop;

(2) The Chair will ask the speaker to have a seat if he/she continues to disrupt the
meeting;

(3) If the speaker refuses to have a seat, the Chair will recess the meeting; and

(4) Will instruct a law enforcement officer to instruct the speaker to stop the
disruptive conduct and escort the speaker out of the meeting venue.

The Vigilante

Comment Up

Terrorism and vigilantism are now being used by a handful of residents in our city to victimize political opponents all in the name of  what they say is "doing what's right."  They use the Race Card to justify their behavior and even made a case against someone for using the N word (when there is no legal proof) to get her fired from her place of employ where she worked as a Realtor.  Not only that, this self-proclaimed vigilante called every real estate agency around to give them the same race card story and he says he is proud of infringing on someone's civil rights.

On top of all that he has done, he sees nothing wrong with it.  In his mind, this is America and he can say and do as he pleases under the guise of free speech and he has the right to act like a street thug. He went after the Common Ground Church calling for a boycott.  A group boycott is illegal under antitrust laws because it has the effect of restraining freedom of trade. No one really knows why he and his handful went after the church but we suspect that it was his loyalty to Gerry Corcia, of code enforcement, who wrote a report to shut them down for not having a license.

He has now gone way over the edge of decency and has committed a tort.  Not only is his vendetta against a resident reduced to writing but it is recorded in a public meeting. He admits to being the organizer of a volunteer group with people such as John Szerdi and Loretta Sharp, in order to suppress and punish anyone who he deems as "racist." After all, vice mayor Scott Maxwell just called all of us who voted against the general obligation bond as "racists." He must believe that if the vice mayor can do it, so can he. In his mind, he is a self-appointed "doer of justice." He is nothing more than an anarchist and anyone with different views from his own are potential/probable targets.

Actually he has now escalated his harassment, not only towards one resident here for her alleged use of the N word, but others for whom he wants to target for just about anything, even those who are standing up for the law or who speak out against his abominations. His and his cohorts actions are a basis for a lawsuit, perhaps due to discrimination/intimidation or blackmail, i.e, "Maybe I'll stop bothering you, if you'll apologize for using the word "nigger."  The object of his harassment could file a petition for a "stay away"(restraining) order, intended to prevent contact by him in any way for violating her civil rights, for his threats and harassment and his repetitive disturbing soap box performances.

Once again, mayor, you failed to protect the very citizens who come to meetings in what Mike Bornstein says is the “city’s temple.”  If that is what it truly is, a sanctuary, last night it felt more like being in an ISIS camp. You continue to allow certain people to say anything they choose against other citizens.  Bornstein started this and he should end it—NOW.  You really need to have more respect as you represent all of the citizens and you need to control the meeting. Mark Parrilla is now threatening others with his vexation while he glances out over the audience and says some of you will be next.  This is what you are condoning by allowing it. Political assassination at best. Will the next targets be all those who oppose more commercialization at our beach?  Will he appear in front of their doors as well?

Personally, I feel the city was conducive to his abominable behavior last night when it allowed him his 2 minutes of free speech to harass another citizen and allowed him to intimidate other citizens with his terror. The city should be protecting citizens at city hall and by allowing his "hate" speech may subject the city to a lawsuit for failure to protect the targets of this "do-gooder." Your lack of action here makes the city complicit in a civil rights action as his targets were not treated equally and protected from his discrimination at a public meeting room. You allowed it. If people can't be safe at city hall, where can they be safe?

Rage, Rapture and Racism - Caught up in the Insanity

Comment Up
The first protest was only a few days ago,
but John Szerdi came back for more.
He can't get enough of exercising his free speech not to mention being
intolerant of anyone holding a different opinion--being a bully.
This time, he fell into the racism trap.
This is one of the reasons why John Szerdi was slaughtered at the polls--
he never understood the facts or that he represented
all of the people.

Some even covered their faces so as not to be seen on camera--about seven this time showed out for Parrilla's second demonstration against Dee McNamara for her alleged use of the N word. Those that I can identify, who  have been caught up in the politics and the rapture: John Szerdi, Loretta Sharp, Retha Lowe, (and covering their faces), Brian Elder, and Roger Hendrix.

At least Serge Jerome had the good sense not to attend this time.  He is now a Committeeman for the Palm Beach County Democratic Party. I don't think he wants to screw up his future.

Even PBSO showed up to this embarrassing scene on an incident that can't be proved. It is now harassment but the organizer needs another 2 minutes of "fame" for his rage and racism. It just proves that some people get caught up in the moment, in the insanity, without fully understanding the facts and they don't care.

I wasn't going to give this any publicity but decided to show that at times people are just a means to an end. You can push certain buttons; they can be fooled and used believing the cause is just. People who scream a lot get some attention. Once again, this fell flat and what they have done is nothing more than racism, bullying and abuse.

The Farcical Demonstration

Comment Up

Five showed up and it quickly dwindled down to three, leaving Mark, his mother and Debbie Parrish.  But he was going to stick up for what he believes is right, by golly. Serge Jerome and John Szerdi came late. Serge was still telling us what's wrong with us for not understanding anything and why he lost--he's black.  Even Ed Deveaux understood the issue--innocent until proven guilty and beside, he told me, Mrs. McNamara was a product of discrimination in Indonesia and knows all about how it feels.  "Show me the proof," he said.  Mark's mother, while being interviewed by the Lake Worth Tribune, was asked why her sign had the word "nigger" on it since they are so upset with that word even being uttered.  Mark told his mother not to talk to the press, "You know how that gets you into trouble," he said. There were more people there supporting Dee McNamara or certainly the premise that this entire episode was caused by the city manager based on hearsay, than those who were trying to conjure up racism. In America everyone has the right to free speech and making fools of themselves even if they don't believe in the Constitution for all. I was told that Channel 12 did an interview and Parrilla lied through his teeth accusing all of us as being racists.

Meeting the Lake Worth candidates

Comment Up

Last night at the Genesis Neighborhood Association meeting, all the candidates showed up other than Serge Jerome. An hour and twenty minutes into the meeting Mark Parrilla gave an announcement that Mr. Jerome had a family emergency and that he sent his apologies.

In order of appearance:

Ryan Maier, running for Commissioner District 4, was the most prepared. He was one of the first arrivals at St. Andrews Church and I spotted him studying his notes. He gave a great introductory five minute speech saying that the primary responsibility of a commissioner is to act on the will of the people--guidance comes from the will of the people. He wants to see an amendment to the city charter to change the heights in our downtown to what the people voted for and an infrastructure plan that will work for the people. "Public development and public information is our business," he said.

John Szerdi, incumbent in district 4, spoke next and started off by saying that he was 62 years old but had a lot of energy. Moving here from Ft. Lauderdale, he put $100,000 into his house renovating and bringing it back to its potential. He loves Lake Worth. He mentioned his higher education, the fact that he was an environmental architect and was involved in the design of the Eco Centre Building on Lake Avenue.  He taught at Indian River College.

Christopher McVoy, incumbent District 2, told us that he has been elected for two terms. He is concerned about our roads as well as the general obligation bond issue and suggested that the city go back to the drawing board as one-half of the voters did not want it.  He also said that the commission needs to do a better job of listening to the people. He also mentioned the Political Action Committee that he formed years ago to save our beach from further commercialization and the City of Lake Worth sued the PAC and him. Now we have a beautiful beach park.

Craig Frost running for Commissioner District 4 spoke last. Not used to public speaking, he had some difficulty at times getting his thoughts across to the audience. He did tell us that he is a 3rd generation living in Lake Worth. His building where his business is located was built in 1952 and he doesn't want to be taxed out of it, concerned about the general obligation bond, an issue that motivated him to run. Through the years, he has not had any responses from commissioners on various issues and even had to go to the news media to get something done. Helping with his neighborhood association, he wants the neighborhoods cleaned up...mentioned the big problem with crime...not enough deputies working the districts.

Even though Serge Jerome did not attend the meeting, Mark Parrilla, the President of Genesis, gave a glowing report on him.
