Louisiana Supreme Court halts criminal case against AG Liz Murrill, citing 'extraordinary' procedural failures

The Louisiana Supreme Court stepped in Friday to freeze the criminal prosecution of Attorney General Liz Murrill, just one day after a New Orleans grand jury handed up a 16-count indictment accusing the state's top law enforcement officer of intimidation and malfeasance. The court's stay order did not hold back: the indictment, it said, "appears to turn the law on its head."

The speed alone is striking. A grand jury indicts a sitting attorney general on Thursday. By Friday, the state's highest court has halted the case, found the defendant is likely to win dismissal, and identified what it called "extraordinary procedural defects and improprieties" in the way the charges were brought.

That timeline raises a question worth asking plainly: Was this prosecution built to hold up in court, or was it built to make a political point?

The charges against Murrill, Louisiana's first female attorney general and a Republican, arose from a dispute over the restructuring of a New Orleans court clerk position.

Earlier this year, the state legislature abolished the elected criminal court clerk office in New Orleans and merged it with another clerk role. Months later, Calvin Duncan, whose murder conviction was vacated after more than 28 years in prison, won election to the now-abolished position.

The lawmakers named in the video are Senators Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) and Mark Kelly (D-AZ), and Representatives Maggie Goodlander (NH), Jason Crow (CO), Chris Deluzio (PA), and Chrissy Houlahan

In the clip, they repeatedly said phrases like “You can refuse illegal orders” and “You must refuse illegal orders.” The video went viral last November and drew immediate outrage from supporters of President Donald Trump.

Sources told reporters the Justice Department sought to charge the lawmakers under 18 U.S.C. § 2387, a statute that addresses inducing or assisting insubordination in the armed forces. But the grand jury did not return indictments.

CBS News and The New York Times were among the outlets to report the decision. The news follows a pattern of high-profile legal attention tied to President Donald Trump, who criticized the lawmakers at the time and called their comments “seditious,” demanding they be “arrested and put on trial.”

BLM Leader Charged With Stealing $3.15 Million In Donor Funds

The executive director of Black Lives Matter (BLM) Oklahoma City (OKC), Tashella Sheri Amore Dickerson, has been charged by federal prosecutors with wire fraud and money laundering for allegedly diverting more than $3.15 million in returned bail checks into her personal accounts.

According to the indictment unsealed Thursday, Dickerson, 52, routed money intended for the group’s bail fund and social justice programs into accounts she controlled between June 2020 and October 2025.

Prosecutors allege Dickerson used the money for her personal benefit, including:

• Travel to Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.
• "Tens of thousands of dollars in retail shopping."
• More than $50,000 in food deliveries.
• The purchase of a vehicle and six real properties.

A federal grand jury returned a 25-count indictment against Dickerson, charging her with 20 counts of wire fraud and five counts of money laundering. She faces up to 20 years in prison for each wire fraud count and up to 10 years for each money laundering count.

As Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg tries to hang a felony charge on former President Donald Trump, leaks from the grand jury indictment against the former president could leave Bragg facing his own felony charge — if he was the source of the leak.

Leaking grand jury documents is a felony in New York. And that means Bragg could be in trouble, former Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz wrote in a commentary piece published Friday by the New York Sun.

There are several federal laws prohibiting the leaking of classified information. Under Title 18 of the U.S. Code, Section 798: A person is in violation of the law if they knowingly and willfully perform any of the following acts involving confidential information:

• Communicate, furnish, transmit, or otherwise make it available to an unauthorized person

• Publish it

• Use it in a way that is either prejudicial to the safety or interest of the U.S., or for the benefit of any foreign government to the detriment of the U.S.

The penalty for a conviction of unauthorized disclosure includes up to 10 years in prison, a large fine, or both.

Emily Kohrs just wrapped up an eight-month investigation into alleged election interference by Trump and his companions in Georgia. She was seen trying hard not to say something she shouldn't about the case during an interview. Legal experts are baffled at Kohrs’ decision to speak out. Now, Trump is going after the forewoman on Truth Social.

But it was her giggling and bizarre comments that raised eyebrows. At one point in her interview with NBC, Kohrs suggested that she hoped Trump would have been subpoenaed to testify before the special grand jury so she could have had the honor of administering him the oath.

A grand jury is a panel of citizens called for service just like a trial jury (also called a “petit jury”) in a criminal or civil case. But a grand jury’s function is different. A prosecutor presents evidence and the grand jurors decide whether it establishes that the accused probably committed a crime. The grand jurors don’t decide guilt or innocence, only whether the person should be charged.
