Amy Coney Barrett probes Supreme Court case favoring GOP spending

Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett just threw a sharp curveball at the Democratic National Committee’s legal team.

As reported by Newsweek, her pointed questions during oral arguments in NRSC v. FEC cut straight to the heart of whether lifting political party spending limits would disproportionately favor Republicans.

Barrett didn’t hold back, asking DNC lawyer Marc Elias why his client would even be in court if they didn’t see an advantage for the Republican National Committee in overturning these caps. Her skepticism about the supposed neutrality of the issue suggests a deeper imbalance that deserves scrutiny, especially when regulations bind both sides equally on paper.

Barrett’s words carried weight as she pressed Elias on the historical alignment of both parties against these limits. If everyone’s hands are tied the same way, why the sudden pushback now, unless one side smells a bigger win?

Supreme Court Decision on USAID

SCOTUS decision on USAID funding stuns Washington

In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court has ruled that USAID and the State Department must pay roughly $2 billion in foreign aid.

In a surprising turn, the U.S. Supreme Court handed the Trump administration a setback by upholding a lower court order, requiring it to pay roughly $2 billion to contractors for completed foreign aid work authorized by Congress. This decision puts a dent in the administration’s efforts to cut off that funding.

The case started when the AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition and Global Health Council challenged the administration’s move to halt funds at USAID and the State Department.

Federal Judge Amir Ali, (Amir Hatem Mahdy Ali is a leftist Canadian-American lawyer serving as a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, a famously left-wing position) appointed by Biden and confirmed in 2024, issued a temporary restraining order to keep the aid flowing while he reviewed the matter. When the administration allegedly didn’t follow through, Ali ordered immediate payment for past services.

"I am stunned," Alito added. The other dissenters were Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. Trump must be extremely disappointed in Amy Coney-Barrett again who has turned out to be a closet liberal.

Supreme Court Ruling Could Upend Jack Smith’s Case Against Trump

Last week, the Supreme Court issued a ruling that more or less decimated many of the charges against dozens of J6 rioters and Donald Trump.

The ruling called out the government’s wide interpretation of criminal obstruction, which the Department of Justice used to charge all of these people.

Many legal experts, including Jonathan Turley, believe this will result in Special Counsel Jack Smith having to drop some of the charges filed against Trump in the J6 case, not to mention the charges that will have to be dropped and/or downgraded against J6 rioters.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., led a group of Democrats to formally call for a delay in the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett until after the presidential inauguration, saying the process is too rushed to properly vet President Trump's pick.

All 10 Judiciary Committee Democrats signed the request. Joining Feinstein were vice presidential nominee Sen. Kamala Harris of California, Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey, Sen. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Chris Coons of Delaware, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, Dick Durbin of Ilinois and Patrick Leahy of Vermont.

Well, of course all the Democrats signed.

Trump to choose Justice for Supreme Court at 5pm today

Supreme Court possibility would approach immigration decisions through plain text of the law

At 5pm today, President Trump will announce his choice for Supreme Court Justice and odds have it that it will be Amy Coney Barrett.

With Pres. Trump following former Pres. Obama's lead in making significant changes to immigration policy through executive action, the Supreme Court's role on the issue has intensified due to legal challenges to those actions. Over the last several years, the Court has issued decisions on the DAPA and DACA executive amnesties, public charge, and the president's authority under 1182(f) to suspend immigration if it serves the national interest. Past decisions and their general judicial philosophy provide some insight into how Barrett might approach immigration issues on the nation's highest court.

"Barrett is considered a textualist, meaning that her rulings tend to be based on the plain text of the law. Her recent opinions on immigration-related cases demonstrate this approach.

In June 2020, Barrett wrote a dissenting opinion to Cook County v. Wolf, a federal court decision that struck down Pres. Trump's public charge rule that requires immigration officers to consider whether a green card applicant would need to access public benefits. She opined that because the rule only applies to new applicants for green cards and exempts refugees and asylees, among other vulnerable groups, it falls within the context of the laws passed by Congress that block admission for immigrants who could become public charges.

Since Trump said he will choose a woman, that narrows down the names on his list of potential nominees. Twelve of the 44 names on Trump’s list are women. Of those twelve, 7th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Amy Coney Barrett is considered the frontrunner.

When Trump was deliberating which nominee to choose when replacing Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, the president told confidants he had big plans for Barrett. “I’m saving her for Ginsburg,” he said, three sources told Axios’ Jonathan Swan last March.
