Secretary of State Testifies before The Senate Foreign Relations Committee

Secretary of State Marco Rubio went to war with Senate Democrats in today’s fiery hearing, at one point, firing back at Democrat Sen. Tim Kaine for attacking President Donald Trump for confusing Greenland with Iceland.

“I think we’re all familiar with president’s who have verbal stumbles,… some more than others,” Rubio said coldly.

Reports broke from Davos that Trump has the framework of a deal in place for Greenland, just not the United States adding the country as a territory and it does appear that the deal will allow the US to take control of some bases for strategic purposes, as well as a possible mineral deal.

As he usually does, Trump took to Truth Social to announce that the framework had been put in place, but it had not yet been finalized. Trump posted, "Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region.”

Trump further noted that the much-feared tariffs he had been threatening against EU nations were no longer a consideration.

Trump also discussed this with the media, stating, "The deal is going to be put out pretty soon, we'll see. It's right now a little bit in progress, but pretty far along. It gets us everything we need it to get."

The proposed deal will have Denmark transferring its sovereignty over Pituffik Space Base in northern Greenland to the United States. This has been under U.S. control for more than seven decades, but the land is legally Denmark’s. The United States would also get legal control over some smaller areas within Greenland for military bases.

This is not the original plan that Trump had in mind, but it serves the same purpose without having to absorb Greenland as a territory, so it is really the best of both worlds.

At the Economic Forum, Trump emphasized that point bluntly, describing Greenland as “a large piece of ice in the middle of the ocean,” but warning of its strategic value “if there is a war” with Russia or China.

“Much of the action will take place on that piece of the ice. Think of it, those missiles would be flying right over the center of that piece of ice. That’s all we want from Denmark. For national and international security, and to keep our very energetic and dangerous potential enemies at bay, is this land on which we’re going to build the greatest golden dome ever built,” Trump said.

Trump also criticized Denmark for what he described as a lack of meaningful presence and investment in Greenland’s defense—remarks that align with longstanding Republican calls for NATO burden-sharing and for European allies to meet their commitments rather than relying on American taxpayers.

Moments earlier, Trump said the U.S. is uniquely capable of defending and developing the territory.

“It’s the US alone that can protect this giant mass of land, this giant piece of ice, develop it and improve it,” he said, adding there was “no sign” of Denmark on the island and accusing Copenhagen of underspending on defense.

Denmark scrambled to dismiss Trump's warnings about Russian and Chinese threats around Greenland. Top Danish officials called Trump's concerns "delusional."

But Denmark's own spy agency just exposed that lie.

Denmark's spy agency confirmed in a recent assessment that Russian and Chinese forces are expanding operations in the Arctic — exactly what Trump's been saying all along.

Denmark has zero capability to stop Russian submarines or Chinese research vessels prowling Greenland's waters.

A 1951 treaty already gives America permanent jurisdiction over defense areas in Greenland including Thule.

But Trump knows treaties aren't enough when adversaries are positioning for control.

Trump revealed Wednesday that Greenland sits at the heart of America's most ambitious defense project. The Golden Dome is a $175 billion missile defense system inspired by Israel's Iron Dome but vastly larger in scale.

Announced in May 2025, the system uses ground-based radar, space-based sensors, and missile interceptors to shield America from ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and hypersonic threats.

Greenland's strategic location makes it irreplaceable for the Golden Dome architecture. Without Greenland, the Golden Dome can't protect the American homeland from threats coming over the North Pole. Russia would launch missiles at America over Greenland airspace.

US to Impose 10 Percent Tariff on 8 European Countries Opposing Greenland Deal

‘The United States of America is immediately open to negotiation with Denmark and/or any of these Countries that have put so much at risk,’ Trump wrote.

The tariff will impact Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland starting Feb. 1, according to a Truth Social post on Jan. 17. The countries are all NATO members.

“This Tariff will be due and payable until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland,” Trump wrote.

“The United States has been trying to do this transaction for over 150 years. Many Presidents have tried, and for good reason, but Denmark has always refused. Now, because of The Golden Dome, and Modern Day Weapons Systems, both Offensive and Defensive, the need to ACQUIRE is especially important.”

The tariff will increase to 25 percent on June 1.

Burgum likened the acquisition of Greenland to historic U.S. territorial expansions. “President Trump understands that the same way that Thomas Jefferson understood the Louisiana Purchase was going to change the course of our country,” Burgum said, drawing another direct parallel to Seward’s purchase of Alaska, which he described as “a resource that is for us today.”

The United States "accepted the legal obligation to defend against any attack" on Greenland in a 1951 treaty with Denmark. It has had bases there since the Second World War. It costs us multi-millions a year defending Greenland and ultimately the United States.

Greenland is the center of U.S. defenses against Russian and/or Chinese nuclear missile attacks. At Pituffik Space Base they have a runway, a seaport and a lot of radar and gigantic satellite dishes.

U.S. Space Force Guardians operate the early-warning radar system to spot intercontinental ballistic missile threats and sea-launched missiles coming out of Russia, China or anywhere else.

The squadrons also provide tracking and command and control for U.S. satellites and all other objects up in space, such as China’s 1,300 satellites. America would be blind without this surveillance.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Governor General Mary Simon scrambled to announce an emergency trip to Greenland this week.

The timing tells you everything.

Trump declared on Truth Social that "the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity" for American national security, and suddenly Canada's racing to Nuuk with promises of partnership and friendship.

Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Paris on Tuesday where both were attending a Ukraine meeting. Carney declared Canada's support for Denmark's "sole authority" over Greenland's fate.

That's diplomatic speak for "please don't let Trump buy this island."

The White House clarified there are no plans to use military force, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Trump wants to purchase Greenland from Denmark through normal diplomatic channels.

Greenland's strategic location makes it perfect for early warning systems, military bases, and monitoring every Russian submarine and Chinese vessel operating in northern waters.

Denmark Surrendered Greenland Once; It Should Do It Again

Greenland did not drift into American stewardship by accident. It arrived there because Denmark dropped it. That fact is routinely obscured by euphemism and sentiment, but it is the hinge on which the entire moral and legal argument turns.

In April 1940, Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany. Copenhagen fell in hours. Its government capitulated and chose accommodation over resistance. Danish state institutions continued to function under German supervision, cooperating administratively and economically with the occupying power. Its armed forces stood down.

And its far-flung colony in the Arctic was abruptly severed from the metropole. No money. No ships. No defense. No instructions. Denmark did not merely lose control of Greenland. It relinquished it, while collaborating under and alongside a hostile regime, in every way that matters.

This is not a rhetorical flourish. Sovereignty is not a feeling. It is a bundle of responsibilities. Defense, finance, and foreign relations are the core of that bundle. When a state permanently abandons those functions over a territory, sovereignty becomes an empty word.

In 1940, Denmark did exactly that. It could not defend Greenland. It could not finance Greenland. It could not communicate with Greenland in any reliable way. And worse, it had placed itself under the effective control of a hostile power.

Greenland, however, did not follow Denmark down that path. Unlike Copenhagen, Greenland refused to recognize Nazi authority. Its local officials rejected German claims and treated Denmark’s capitulation as legally and morally irrelevant to the island’s future. Faced with isolation and an existential threat, Greenland’s leaders chose alignment with the only power capable of protecting them.

In April 1941, months before Pearl Harbor and before the U.S. formally entered the war, Greenland signed an agreement with the United States placing its defense under American protection. This was one of America’s first forward defense commitments of WWII.

Special Envoy to Greenland appointed

Trump appoints Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland

President Trump announced Sunday evening he was appointing Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland — drawing warnings from the Danish government over continued US interest in annexing the world’s largest island.

“Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country’s Interests for the Safety, Security and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World,” Trump announced in appointing Landry.

Landry responded: “It’s an honor to serve you in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the US.”

Landry, 54, added that he would remain as governor in addition to his new role. The former congressman and state attorney general was elected the Pelican State’s chief executive in 2023.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said in a brief statement that Landry’s appointment “confirms the continued American interest in Greenland.”

According to Fox News, Her email contradicting Vice President JD Vance's statements led to a statement of mistrust from the Pentagon.

Meyers, who had been stationed at Pituffik, Greenland, sent an email to her personnel shortly after Vance’s pointed remarks on Denmark's handling of Greenlandic issues. In her March 31 email, she expressed a perspective that differed from the vice president’s, suggesting that the base staff did not share his views.

Meyers alluded to the challenges and reflections triggered by the vice president’s visit, stating, “I have spent the weekend thinking about Friday's visit — the actions taken, the words spoken, and how it must have affected each of you.”

This introspection, however, led to higher-ups questioning her capability to maintain an apolitical stance as required in her role.

Trump pushes annexation of Greenland during meeting with NATO secretary

President Trump on Thursday expressed confidence the United States would annex Greenland, even suggesting the head of the NATO alliance could be a key player in facilitating the acquisition.

“I think it will happen,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office during a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

“And I’m just thinking, I didn’t give it much thought before but I’m sitting with a man that could be very instrumental. You know, Mark, we need that for international security,” Trump said, gesturing to Rutte.

Rutte agreed that Greenland and the Arctic Circle are critical for security reasons, noting that China and Russia have a growing presence in the region. But he said any discussion about Trump’s attempts to acquire Greenland were outside of his purview.

“I don’t want to drag NATO in that,” Rutte said.

Trump has really been pushing the idea of the United States acquiring Greenland.

Now, there has been nothing in terms of Greenland wanting to be acquired by the US, and Denmark, which more or less controls Greenland, is not budging on giving up the territory.

Even so, while waffling a bit, JD Vance still believes it could happen.

If I was a betting man/woman, I would place this at about a 10% chance of this happening, probably less, if I am being honest.

When Vance was asked directly if he thinks Trump will be able to acquire Greenland, he responded, “I think it is possible, Maria. So here’s the thing that I think a lot of folks don’t appreciate about Greenland: it’s really important to our national security.

"President Donald Trump had European officials scrambling after he reportedly told Denmark he was dead serious about taking over Greenland in a recent fiery phone call, the officials told the Financial Times Friday.

Trump reportedly talked with Danish Premier Mette Frederiksen for 45 minutes during the phone call, with the premier reiterating to Trump that Greenland is not for sale while Trump pushed back vigorously, senior European officials briefed on the call told the Financial Times. Trump cited national security as one of the reasons for the potential Greenland takeover, with Russia and China‘s influence in the arctic only growing in recent years."

“The intent was very clear. They want it,” one official told the Financial Times. “The Danes are now in crisis mode.”

Trump allegedly threatened to tariff Denmark if they did not relinquish the arctic island, according to the Financial Times. Greenland hosts an abundance of natural resources, including rich oil reserves and minerals.

America currently operates Pittufik U.S. Space Base on the island, which includes a radar station which is part of the U.S.’ ballistic missile early warning system, according to the Department of Defense. Múte Egede, Greenland’s prime minister, has repeatedly stressed that the island of around 57,000 would rather be independent than submit to U.S. rule, according to the Financial Times.

“We are ready to talk,” he said. “Cooperation is about dialogue. Cooperation means that you will work towards solutions.”

“Greenland is for the Greenlandic people. We do not want to be Danish, we do not want to be American. We want to be Greenlandic.”

Donald Trump Jr., fresh off a whirlwind trip to Greenland, told Newsmax on Tuesday night that there's a groundswell of support among the people he met that would love to see the Arctic territory have an "alliance" with the United States instead of Denmark.

Don Jr. visited the Danish territory with conservative podcaster Charlie Kirk, an idea he said was hatched a "few weeks before the holidays."

Don Jr.'s trip came amid President-elect Donald Trump's recent public statements showing an interest in acquiring the territory, an area of strategic importance for the U.S, China, Russia, and others.

“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, while also announcing Ken Howery for US ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark.

Trump’s reopening of discussions about purchasing rare earth minerals-rich Greenland came just before Christmas and were followed by the usual kerfuffle from the liberal media.

But, as the Wall Street Journal reports, during his New Year speech, Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede emphasized his desire to pursue independence from Denmark, its former colonial ruler, marking a significant change in the rhetoric surrounding the Arctic island’s future.

Since 2009, Greenland has held the right to declare independence through a referendum. Egede’s speech also expressed a desire to strengthen Greenland’s cooperation with other countries but said it is not for sale and never will be.

Former Trump National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien warned that Greenland needed more than sled dog teams, during an appearance on Fox News. “The Danes need to put the frigate that’s necessary there, they can put the air wings, they can put the missiles in Greenland, and they can put the infantry there that they need to defend [it],” O’Brien said.
