Personally, I believe that city managers should stay out of politics and cease being so unprofessional with the citizens of this city no matter their behavior. It wasn't funny, but it was and could be again, a serious issue that could affect the surrounding neighborhoods around John Prince Park in a negative way.
Another thing--city managers should stop giving their biased viewpoints from the dais unless asked to do so.

Winners and Losers
It's been a losing team. And now all of those who supported the Atlanta Braves coming to John Prince Park are losers too. The only thing they managed to do was to divide the community even further.
The only winners are the responsible residents of Palm Beach County who wanted to preserve their park, the environment and the wildlife in one of the oldest parks for families in the State of Florida. This is the first time we lucked out for having no money--no money to fund the Braves in their quest to ruin our county park. They weren't about to pay for anything. They wanted your money so that they could make all of the profits. Apparently Sarasota worked out a deal with this billion dollar corporation.

Atlanta Braves picks Sarasota for Spring Training facility
The Atlanta Braves announced today that the organization has picked Sarasota County for its new spring training complex. The team is in exclusive negotiations with the county and the city of North Port to move operations as soon as the 2019 spring season.

Atlanta Braves are still lurking around Palm Beach County
Dave Kerner, our county commissioner representative in this area, received money for his Board of County Commissioners' campaign from every special interest and fat cat and was even endorsed by Shelly Vana, someone Palm Beach County rejected at the polls by a 3 to 1 margin.
David Kerner admits to meeting with the Atlanta Braves (a losing team with 68 wins and 93 loses in 2016) in early November. If we had known that meetings were planned, he might not have won his election.
Kerner said, “While I recognize the excitement that surrounds this opportunity, I have to be a good steward of public funds and balance the competing interests of my district,” he said Friday in an email to The Palm Beach Post.
”At this time, I have not been presented with a financing plan that gives me confidence. I recognize the extreme need this area of the county has, and the synergy this project may have with the surrounding cities and the state college. As the district commissioner for where this project is targeted, I am open to continuing the conversation with all the interested parties, but am categorically unwilling to commit a disproportionate share of county public funds.”

The county even wanted to give them $100 million plus the land for free. The stadium at Disney is just not good enough for them--they want our county land.
We told you, the public, that the idea of corporate welfare to the Atlanta Braves would be resurrected once the County got hold of the 7% sales tax. The sales tax hike — from 6 percent to 7 percent — will last a decade and is expected to generate an extra $2.7 billion for fixing schools, roads and bridges and covering new construction projects and technology purchases. The county denies that any sales tax money will be used for the Braves.

As we all know, the entire Palm Beach County Commission, other than Paulette Burdick, has supported, encouraged and fought for the Atlanta Braves to bulldoze John Prince Park for a Spring training baseball stadium. They have all, other than Paulette Burdick and former commissioner Jess Santamaria, encouraged development after development even in the Ag Reserve. It is a big disappointment that one of our former Lake Worth commissioners contributed to some of their campaigns. Money talks.
What has not yet been revealed by the press is the campaign money (given to those who are up for election) by the Atlanta Braves (back scratching). Shelley Vana was term limited as a commissioner and received a resounding defeat for her quest to be the Palm Beach County Property Appraiser.
However, Hal Valeche and Mary Lou Berger are up for re-election to the Board of County Commissioners on November 8. They both had opponents from opposing Parties.
Following is their baseball campaign donations/connections...until we investigate further.

For calling all of us who silently demonstrated at John Prince Park against corporate welfare and her approval while county commissioner of the Atlanta Braves bulldozing our wonderful park, Ms. Vana called us "idiots."
Because of term limits, she could not run again for County Commissioner District 3 and instead threw her hat in the ring to run for Property Appraiser of Palm Beach County. She had zero experience and believed in her own chutzpah. She did have attitude.
Thank God for term limits, something we should have in Lake Worth.
What will she do now? Become a lobbyist for the Atlanta Braves?
Consider voting NO in November to the sales tax increase, a tax we believe a portion will go towards building a $110 million dollar stadium for a billionaire corporation. The newly elected commissioner for Vana's old seat, Dave Kerner, is for the sales tax increase.

Vote for Dorothy Jacks for Property Appraiser
Dorothy Jack's opponent, Shelley Vana, called us "idiots" for having the audacity to stand up for John Prince Park and object to the County approving corporate welfare and bulldozing 100 acres for the Atlanta Braves. If this penny sales tax passes (that will last ten years) at the polls in November, it is believed that the Board of County Commissioners will divert $110 million to build the stadium allowing all those who buy anything in our county to pay for it all. Such a deal--for our environment, our wildlife and all those who own this treasure, the people of Palm Beach County.

I think billionaires should pay for their own stadiums.
Me: Is John Prince Park a proper location? Should any of the penny sales tax go towards the Atlanta Braves?
As for whether the location is "proper," I believe that is relative. For supporters of the project it works and for those against it likely doesn't matter where it is built. For me, I see it as more loss of green space for little economic benefit to the county.
As for the sales tax money, I don't think the Braves should be benefiting. Our arts and culture institutions are far more important economically than 4 weeks of spring training every year. Yet, arts and culture were cut out of the sales tax.

This park is green space set aside for people to visit in their leisure time to get away from the congestion of urban Palm Beach County and partake in recreation. The County is rapidly losing its little-remaining green space and desperately needs John Prince Park.
Also this green space is part of the small amount of wildlife habitat remaining in the County for birds and other species. Without that habitat, many species could parish. Finally, this deal gives the Braves this land at no (or at most) little cost to them. They should not receive such a valuable asset for free, especially considering that they have received free land in previous stadium deals only to leave that area in pursuit of another stadium elsewhere.

Shelley Vana calls us "idiots" at today's Dog Park Groundbreaking

One Lake Worth commissioner, Christopher McVoy, (he wore one of our t-shirts) and one County commissioner, Shelley Vana, attended the ground-breaking ceremony this morning at the Mounds Circle. A small tent was set up with chairs for the public. Ms. Vana spoke as well as Diane Sauve, Director of the Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control. Many people were from the Parks and Recreation Department.
About a dozen members from our John Prince Park Preservation Facebook page and friends were there with t-shirts and signs. We were there in support of the dog park but also there to silently protest any corporation bulldozing any square inch of our park. The PBSO was not going to allow us in but eventually relented.
Shelly Vana, the people's representative, called us all "idiots." Shelley Vana told me that it was inappropriate that we were there. Then the conversation went from dogs to beach. She accused me of never thanking her for the beach. When I asked her what she was talking about she said that it was she that got the bond money for our beach. I then made a statement that it took us six years to get the money. (I mean think about this folks, we were paying on the recreation bond for years on our county taxes with NO results...it was our designated money). She then pointed her finger at me and told me, "That was your fault."

Now our local politicians (Pam Triolo and Scott Maxwell) are getting involved in Palm Beach County Politics. They are using the highly political neighborhood associations to further their end. This is a "you scratch mine and I'll scratch yours" pay-back time for what Shelley Vana did when she voted to bulldoze John Prince Park for corporate America...having the Atlanta Braves ruin John Prince Park at her direction. And we can't forget her votes to approve every major development in Palm Beach County to its detriment, especially the western communities and the Ag Reserve. She is also good at fundraising, thus her appeal to Maxwell and Triolo. What exactly has she done for Lake Worth? She also voted to increase your taxes.
Shelley Vana is running for the office of Palm Beach Property Appraiser and because it is an elected position, she believes that it is "political." In actuality, this office needs someone with experience as it is highly technical. Dorothy Jacks is that person who has 27 years of experience and who is an expert in her field, not a politician. Jacks said 18 property appraisers across the state have endorsed her, as have two of Vana’s colleagues on the county commission, Priscilla Taylor and Paulette Burdick.
We believe that Maxwell and Triolo should be fully concentrating on the City of Lake Worth, solving it's crime, slum, blight and roads rather than engaging in outside politics.

The council voted 4-1 supporting the concept of an Atlanta Braves Spring Training Facility in South Central Palm Beach County. There was a good deal of discussion from Council and comments from our residents prior to voting on this resolution. Since then, a few residents who didn't understand why we brought this resolution forward wanted to know why we supported the idea of a sports facility in our area. Central Palm Beach County has been, in my opinion, neglected by the County for many years.
The County has spent incredible amounts of money and re-sources supporting many projects in the north and south areas of the county: Roger Dean Stadium, the new Nationals/Astros facility and Scripps to name a few. These projects have brought many great things to the local areas surrounding them. Furthermore, the County will not be interested in negotiating with the Atlanta Braves if the local cities are not in support of a facility of this caliber. This is why we passed Resolution 16-08 to offer our support for the concept of the facility. Lake Worth, Greenacres and Lantana all have passed similar resolutions.
The Atlanta Braves will be designing an extensive economic study of just how their new facility will have a positive impact on the local areas, and will present this to the County Commission in the near future. Once we have a chance to review all of the proposals, we will be in a position to either support a solid plan that benefits Central Palm Beach County or not, if the plan doesn’t make sense.

The county has told us that this is for the dog park ($2 million) and an upgrade to the high voltage distribution replacement at the Campground ($1.3 million). We have contacted the county administrator, Verdenia Baker, to verify. At this time, we have not heard back.
So, we have no choice but to Trust but Verify and we will continue to try and get an answer from the county on all of this work of late: Removing aged trees; upgrades of electricity and clearing of land. Postcard to PB County School Superintendent

Deciding that supporting schools was important in Palm Beach County in order for them to fix aging facilities and upgrade technology, the county's final vote was to lump all infrastructure into the one penny sales tax referendum to be voted on November 8, 2016. We were hoping that the School Board would not collaborate and have a separate referendum. We also agree that Karen Brill voted correctly for a separate referendum.
Our latest postcard is to the Superintendent of Schools telling him that if we find out (and I am sure the county will keep this under lock and key) that any part of this sales tax will go to support the Atlanta Braves at John Prince Park, then we will be voting against the sales tax increase.
Right now, all sorts of upgrades are occurring at John Prince Park such as electrical, clearing of trees and the 6th Avenue Bridge that would take people from I-95 to our county park. The county is denying that these upgrades have anything to do with the Atlanta Braves.

Deciding that supporting schools was important in Palm Beach County in order for them to fix aging facilities and upgrade technology, the county's final vote was to lump all infrastructure into the one penny sales tax referendum to be voted on November 8, 2016. We were hoping that the School Board would not collaborate and have a separate referendum. We also agree that Karen Brill voted correctly for a separate referendum.
Our latest postcard is to the Superintendent of Schools telling him that if we find out (and I am sure the county will keep this under lock and key) that any part of this sales tax will go to support the Atlanta Braves at John Prince Park, then we will be voting against the sales tax increase.

Katie Mcgiveron speaks to Boynton Beach City Commission

On Tuesday night, Katie Mcgiveron spoke before the Boynton Beach City Commission as they had a Resolution on their Consent Agenda (encouraged by Scott Maxwell to do so) to approve of the Atlanta Braves coming into John Prince Park. Following is her public commentary:
Mayor, Commissioners, my name is Katie Mcgiveron. Thank you for allowing me to speak this evening.
I was born at Bethesda Hospital a LONG time ago, grew up in Lantana, and my husband and I made the big move to Lake Worth after we were married. I am the president of my neighborhood association, ROLO, Residents of Lake Osborne. Again, thank you for pulling this item for discussion.
In the packets I sent to each one of you is a map of John Prince Park, a break down of the usable acreage in the park and a card to our Facebook page. I also included an article by Bloomberg News "The Braves Play Taxpayers better than they play Baseball."
To get to the proposed stadium site you must take either Lantana or 6th Avenue South. Right now the 6th Avenue South interchange is such a traffic clogged mess that FDOT has commissioned a study to see how the traffic problems in this area can be solved. The state does not do this kind of thing often or lightly.
John Prince Park is a public park that should never have even been considered for something like this. Once our park is gone, it's gone. You can't just say "we'll put another park over there." There is NO MORE OVER THERE left in Palm Beach County.
But let's cut to the chase: MONEY. Money is always the bottom line isn't it.? Your mission statement here in Boynton is as follows: "To create a sustainable community by providing exceptional municipal service in a financially responsible manner." IN A FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE MANNER!
Baseball stadiums are a bad deal for the communities that have to pay for them. Study after study after study is out there, by economist after economist after economist.
Go to the Facebook page John Prince Park Preservation that I gave to you, scroll down and read the articles. Do your research before you jump into a resolution like this. In closing, if I may be so bold, I have some homework for each of you. This weekend, go to John Prince Park and take some time to look around. Maybe even talk to some people using the park. Once this park is gone, it's gone.
