California Democrats buck Newsom and Becerra with vote to endorse billionaire wealth tax

California's Democratic Party resolutions committee voted to recommend endorsing a one-time 5% tax on the state's roughly 200 billionaires, defying both outgoing Gov. Gavin Newsom and gubernatorial nominee Xavier Becerra, who oppose the measure.

The committee's Saturday vote puts Proposition 40, formally titled the California 2026 Billionaire Tax Act, one step closer to an official party endorsement ahead of the November 3 ballot.

But the recommendation is not final. Full endorsement requires at least 60% of delegates to approve it during Sunday's general session, where delegates could also vote to take no position, a move that needs only a simple majority, or pull the recommendation for a separate floor debate.

Either way, the committee's action exposes a sharp rift inside California's ruling party over how far Sacramento should go in taxing its wealthiest residents, and whether doing so would protect state programs or simply chase money across state lines.

Former California Democratic Rep. Katie Porter announced she is walking away from politics, at least for now, after a gubernatorial primary collapse that saw her plummet from front-runner to a fifth-place finish with barely 4% of the vote.

Her new venture: recommending books on Instagram.

Porter posted a video to her Instagram account Thursday declaring she is "done for now with politics and campaigning" and rebranding her page as "Katie Porter turns the page," a space for book recommendations and author content.

The Washington Examiner reported on the announcement, which caps a remarkably swift fall for a politician who once polled at 21% in the California Democratic gubernatorial primary.

The rebrand is less a graceful exit than an acknowledgment of political reality. Porter's campaign cratered after a leaked video and a string of staff controversies turned her progressive brand toxic, even among Democratic primary voters in deep-blue California.

California bill to make Muslim holidays official state days raises hard questions about school neutrality

California's State Assembly voted 64-1 to pass AB 2017, a bill that would establish two Muslim holy days, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, as official state holidays and authorize public schools to close for both.

The bill advanced to the Senate Appropriations Committee on Wednesday, carrying a provision that has drawn sharp criticism from religious liberty advocates: it would direct the State Board of Education to develop a model curriculum for classroom exercises "acknowledging and celebrating" the holidays.

The measure, authored by Assemblyman Matt Haney, a San Francisco Democrat, sailed through the Assembly with virtually no opposition. But the bill's language goes beyond calendar recognition. It opens the door for state-guided classroom activities tied to specific religious observances, a step that critics say collides with California's own longstanding neutrality rules.

AB 2017 would add Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha to California's official state holiday calendar, designating a single day of observance for each. Both holidays traditionally span three to four days, and both shift annually on the Islamic lunar calendar. The bill authorizes, but does not require, local public school boards and community colleges to shut down campuses for both days.

If neutrality means anything, it means the state does not pick winners among faiths. California chose that principle when it scrubbed Christmas and Easter from school calendars. The state cannot now build celebration curriculum for Eid and call it equity. It is preference, dressed in the language of inclusion.

Neutrality is only a principle if it applies to everyone. The moment it becomes selective, it is just politics.

USPS acting on two recent executive orders: March 25th and March 31st by President Trump, “Preserving And Protecting The Integrity Of American Elections” and “Ensuring Citizenship Verification And Integrity In Federal Elections” that aim to limit mail-in voting which is a vehicle for systemic fraud.

The US Postal Service proposed a new rule that would effectively create a national voter list and prevent states from mailing ballots to anyone who is not on that list.

The proposed rule, which was formally published on June 2nd, comes just one day after a federal judge decided that it was too early to weigh in on Trump’s executive orders because much had not yet been implemented.

Interesting timing, given the obvious fraud in the Los Angeles election for mayor wherein a ballot dump several days after the election resulted in 100% of the new ballots going to Communist Karen Bass whose policies burnt down 8000 homes and burned 12 people to death, or the Muslim immigrant Nithya Raman who is Left of Bass. [Is it possible to be Left of a person who was trained in guerilla warfare in Cuba?]

Raman,as a council member, authored the Sanctuary City Ordinance, which ensures city resources are never used for federal immigration enforcement.

Spencer Pratt, the outsider who lost his own home and had two life-long friends burn to death, got ZERO votes from this dump of fraudulent ballots. BTW, ballot dumps in Democrat-run states never increase the votes for Republican or Independent candidates.

On election night, returns placed Pratt in second place behind Karen Bass, with Raman trailing a very distant third. However, as LA County processed waves of mail-in ballots over the course of the week following election day, Raman overcame the deficit to surpass Pratt by roughly 22,000 votes, shifting the second-place spot, and kicking Pratt out of November’s general election.

California under Gavin Newsom has spent hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on electronic tablets for prisoners, all in the name of rehab, connection, and digital equity.

That sounds nice on paper, the kind of language that makes bureaucrats nod like they just solved civilization. But the real-world result, according to reports, is a mess that has taxpayers shaking their heads again.

Instead of a clean success story, the state appears to have handed out high-tech toys to convicted criminals while ordinary Californians keep paying more and getting less.

Reports say inmates found the obvious use fast...PORN.

Fox 11 in Los Angeles reported that some death row inmates have used the tablets to watch pornography and carry on lewd conversations. One inmate, Robert Maury, a serial rapist and murderer, allegedly said he used his taxpayer-funded tablet to view porn and send nude images.

Others reportedly used video chat tools to get someone on the outside to play porn on a television for them. If you were hoping the system would be used for algebra homework and polite book clubs, well, that dream lasted about five minutes.

Criminals with free electronics apparently did what criminals do when given a loophole and a screen.

Newsom’s newest freebie comes with a big bill

Gov. Gavin Newsom is rolling out another taxpayer-funded program and calling it a win for families. His new plan, “Golden State Start,” promises 400 free diapers to every baby born in California through participating hospitals, starting this summer.

The state will work with the nonprofit Baby2Baby to hand out the diapers when parents leave the hospital. Newsom says every baby deserves a healthy start, which is a nice line, even if California taxpayers keep getting the invoice. The program will begin at about 65 to 75 hospitals, mostly ones that serve low-income families on Medi-Cal, before expanding statewide.

The state says families need help, but the math still matters.

This is the latest in Newsom’s growing list of family-focused spending plans, which already includes free school meals and universal preschool for 4-year-olds. Supporters will say diapers are expensive, and that is true. Many families do struggle with the cost of infant supplies. But California is also running into a hard fiscal wall, and that matters too.

The Associated Press reported that the state set aside $7.4 million in last year’s budget for the diaper rollout and wants another $12.5 million to carry it through June 2027. That may sound small in Sacramento terms, where “small” often means the size of a bridge loan, but every new program adds to the pile.

On Wednesday, a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals handed Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta one of the most lopsided losses of their careers.

The panel – including two Trump appointees and one Obama appointee – ruled 3-0 that Newsom's No Vigilantes Act violated the U.S. Constitution.

Court rejects California's banning federal agents wearing masks

A federal court struck down California’s requirement that masked federal agents identify themselves

This is a blow to the state’s ongoing resistance to the Trump administration’s deportation program

A 9th U.S. Circuit Court panel handed down a ruling prohibiting California from enforcing a section of the 2025 law that mandates federal law enforcement officers visibly display identification while carrying out their duties.

The law was destined to face critical scrutiny from the federal judiciary. An 1890 Supreme Court case provides that a state cannot prosecute federal law enforcement officers acting in the course of their duties.

The law also ran headlong into the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution, which holds that states may not regulate the operations of the federal government.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed it in connection with a law that banned federal immigration agents from wearing masks. The Trump administration sued to challenge both of them.

Independent journalist Nick Shirley confronted California lawmakers seeking to criminalize investigative journalism which exposes fraud in a video posted Saturday.

Democratic California State Assemblywoman Mia Bonta, the wife of Democratic California Attorney General Rob Bonta, introduced Assembly Bill 2624 (AB2624) in February. In a 25-minute YouTube video posted Saturday, Shirley interviews multiple lawmakers about the bill, which has moved through the Assembly's Privacy and Consumer Protection and Judiciary committees.

"It was only until I exposed fraud that they actually cracked down on the fraud and made some arrests here, especially with the hospices. And do you know that, if this bill were to pass, it'd make it illegal for someone to go after fraud, especially if it's based off of immigrants — for instance, Armenians in California?" Shirley asked one lawmaker.

Tom Steyer's California governor bid centers on prosecuting ICE agents and flying deported immigrants back to the state

Healthcare fraud in CA goes way beyond Hospice

With the recent revelations about massive hospice fraud in California, it increasingly looks as though the whole corrupt state of California needs to be on hospice care.

It would be nice to think that (cue Gatlin Brothers) “all the fraud…in California…is in a bank in the middle of Beverly Hills, and so easy to reclaim.”

But over the years, billions and billions have been pilfered and spent long ago by Democrat Party chiselers who grifted it from the taxpayers, who can barely afford to even live in California themselves.

The top state prosecutor in California, Rob Bonta, a Democrat (of course), is trumpeting his prosecution of 14 fraudulent hospice companies --- 21 individual suspects --- for billing MediCal and Medicaid for $267 million in nonexistent services.

This reportedly came after they received a tip from the California Department of Healthcare Services.

Vance anti-fraud task force charges 15 people in $50M+ California hospice fraud scheme

Federal prosecutors have charged 15 people in Southern California in connection with a wide-ranging scheme that allegedly defrauded Medicare of more than $50 million through sham hospice operations, authorities said April 2.

Eight defendants — including nurses, a chiropractor, and a purported psychologist — were arrested in coordinated raids across the Los Angeles area, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors allege the defendants operated fraudulent hospice companies that enrolled patients who were not terminally ill and billed Medicare for unnecessary or nonexistent services. In some cases, beneficiaries were recruited with monthly cash payments to sign up for hospice care, according to court documents.

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz announced a plan to review every hospice in California by the end of the year, along with a nationwide moratorium on certain medical equipment tied to fraudulent billing, according to FOX.

Brett Guthrie – the Kentucky Republican who chairs the House Energy and Commerce Committee says the California Air Resources Board, the state's vehicle emissions regulator, started blocking automakers from bringing new cars to market unless they agreed to comply with the exact mandate Congress had just nullified.

Toyota. Ford. Every manufacturer that wanted to sell vehicles in the country's largest state had to play by rules that no longer legally existed. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the Biden-era EV rules caused Detroit's Big Three to eat $50 billion in losses.
