At the Lake Worth beach

Now, to purchase a beach decal, you must do it on line. But there is no information on the City's web site as to the date that you can start to purchase. Everything is more complicated with the City these days. You used to go into the Annex with your ID, Car Registration and Utility bill to purchase a beach decal that was opened during the last week of the preceding month when it became in effect..

According to The Lake Worth Herald, you can only purchase beach parking permits from the city web site available on May 1. All permits are now virtual and assigned to the license plate once paid. There are no more physical decals or paper applications anymore!!?? Don't know how this is going to work.

Today, you can't get one person to ever answer the phone. And my gripe of late is the service charge they are charging on water and electric. Can't get any info on that either.

Parking decals on sale today - 50 spaces

Today is the day to renew your beach parking decal. The city is trying to streamline decal renewal and a few weeks ago they sent a renewal form to be used on-line that entailed scanning all the required documents. Not too many took up the City's offer. For a resident, this is still a great deal.  See you at the beach!

And LET'S SAVE OUR POOL!

Now you can renew Beach Decals by Mail

UPDATE: I just received an e-mail (12:02pm 4-5-17) from that department. Beach decal mail renewals were only sent to current decal holders.

Lake Worth must have a lot of extra money laying around. Everyone with a current decal (corrected) in their name received the following notice yesterday. It didn't have to be a special mailing...it could have gone out with the electric bill. They are making it easy for the guy who just doesn't want to be bothered jumping in his car and going to the City Annex to purchase a decal. This is moving the city forward in their minds.

Do you remember in 2014 with only 50 spaces negotiated with the County for residents only, a motion was made by Commissioner Szerdi to ask staff to amend the ordinance to allow seasonal property owners (not residents) to purchase beach parking decals. If they owned a property and paid taxes, these snowbirds (and they were totally ticked off when they came to that commission meeting) were entitled. They can't vote here unless they are homesteaded. This cost him the election.

Now with this beach decal by mail policy (I don't recall the commission voting on this), it could be more crowded than ever.

Hudson Holdings' Meeting at the Lake Worth Casino

Comment Up

Last night's Hudson Holdings was the sameo, sameo, at least for all of us who have heard it before. They want our beach.  There are many people in this city who feel that they will get this deal because of politics and their "in" with the commissioners.  And we can't forget, that it was the city manager who opened up this can of worms. The meeting started at 5:21pm, 21 minutes late, because of the registration slow-up as well as people arriving late. I got there at 4:30 and the entire decal parking lot was filled. One lady really was mad that the city took out those 23 decal parking spaces. She thought that they had just eliminated them but we informed her that they had been moved closer to Benny's on the Beach. That is where I ended up parking.

All doors were locked to the ballroom other than one on the north side where they had a registration table. Besides the preregistration online and the ticket that they requested you bring, they wanted proof of who you were and if your license matched your registration.  We were told that they needed a driver's license ID.  Even Muslims wearing Burkas don't have to show their faces in some states across our country to prove identity. They gave us a blue arm band that you had to wear while there and you literally had to cut it off. As they were attempting to be fully aboveboard, they wanted to assure us that no commissioner or public official or anyone on the Selection Committee from the ITN was in the room. There was no way that they wanted to be accused of collusion. Open and transparent was the message but it had to make you wonder.

When we walked up to the casino there were four Sheriff vehicles parked in front. When I asked about it, I was told that Hudson Holdings had hired the PBSO as security. As they hired enough men for two vehicles, there had to be a third vehicle as two require a supervisor.  That was a lot of overtime.  The fourth vehicle was because of a burglary. I asked one deputy if there was only one door for egress and ingress and he said "yes."  When asking about a fire, he said that he would open the rest of the doors at the ballroom.  That was comforting.

Also, our pool was opened and it was packed with swimmers from the Swim Club.  It looked beautiful.   We are so lucky to have this gorgeous Olympic pool right at the beach.  Szerdi even mocked the murals of beach scenes on the inside walls of the pool area saying we had the real ocean on the other side of the wall. It was a desperate attempt to ridicule.

Most of the chairs that had been set up were filled but there were a few empties. It was hard to estimate the number of attendees as my estimation was half of someone else's.

If you only came for the food, well...
Most of Hudson's budget for this event was obviously spent on mailings and
signs illegally erected on city rights of way.

Former commissioner John Szerdi who works for Hudson Holdings did much of the presentation. They took questions from the crowd, some of which were right to the point even bringing up their failure to do anything at the Gulfstream hotel. Basically, and in my opinion, the crowd overall was not happy that anything could change at our beach and were not thrilled about Hudson. Commissioner Szerdi, to this day, does not believe that he lost his election because of Hudson Holdings...that we all lied. Hudson must believe that too as they use Szerdi for all presentations.
John Szerdi grinning and working the crowd

We left that meeting early and headed up to the Lake Worth Golf Course where there was a book signing about historic Lake Worth and the cottages. The proceeds from this book are all being donated by the author, Marion Cone and the Designer, Walter Harper to the Friends of the Lake Worth Library.

The golf course is another fabulous asset of ours that this commission always likes to tell people--"It's not making money" either. Folks, the beach is sustainable. It takes about three years for any new business to start supporting itself. The golf course IS now making money after we spent a lot of money re-doing the greens.

We like our beach just the way it is. Although different than Hudson's message, ours is "Hands off Our Beach."

Decal Parking at the Lake Worth Beach

Comment Up

I always drive up the north end of our beach park and enter the resident decal parking. I never drive down the south end of our beach. Who would have known that 23 spaces were moved from our original and dedicated decal parking lot? It was never confirmed at City Hall that this was decided. It was never voted on. Is this not policy? I don't particularly have an objection to this other than it was never discussed at City Hall. As I recall, this was brought up by Mr. Bornstein, casually and not in depth.  No details were given at all other than he wanted to move some of our decal parking to the south end.

My concern was whether the County had to give Lake Worth permission to move these spaces as our resident decal parking lot was part of our 30 year agreement with them in order to get the $5 million in bond money. I asked Juan Ruiz our Leisure Services Director and he said, "NO," as long as we have 613 spaces for the general public. There have been complaints from some residents that there were no decal parking spaces at the south end near Benny's and the pier. The city made a good compromise.

Decal parking at Lake Worth beach

Comment Up

This is the first parking ticket I have seen at the beach although there have been many. Yesterday the beach was crowded and the entire decal lot was filled. There were a few cars with no decal sticker that were not ticketed at the time I took this photo.

Day at Lake Worth beach

It was a beautiful day at the Lake Worth beach

Quite a few cars in the resident lot with no current sticker. We did not see anyone yesterday from the parking division issuing tickets. A few kids were trying to surf but the water was relatively calm, the sky was blue and the weather was perfect.

Resident Decal parking permits - Stupidity Rules

Comment Up

Most Stupid Motion and Vote of the Year made by the Lake Worth City Commission:

Public Hearing Ordinance 2014-10

With only 50 spaces negotiated with the County for residents only, a motion made by Commissioner Szerdi and seconded by Commissioner McVoy to ask staff to amend the ordinance to allow seasonal property owners (not residents) to purchase beach parking decals if they:

1) owned property in Lake Worth;
2) paid Lake Worth Utilities;
3) had a vehicle registration in the same name that corresponded with the same property owner or provided personal identification
4) increase the fee to $40 for residents and $60 for seasonal residents. (a resident in the chamber actually suggested charging $125 for a decal) The vice mayor doesn't think this is high enough. Most take that attitude who seldom go to the beach or are only interested in fleecing the residents and their one benefit they have had for decades.

50 spaces, negotiated for the residents, not property owners, now will be opened up to even more people than the 1,745 who purchased them in the 2013 year and they raised the price to boot! When the unlimited parking was eliminated by the County, it left only 50 spaces for residents. Since 1984, the city was able to accommodate property owners with decals but it all changed with the beach redevelopment.

Not now--not with this commission. Now, there is a less chance of finding a spot particularly on weekends, holidays and during the Winter Season.  Now they say that they can sell 50 spots to a possible 12,000 property owners because they "were upfront with you" and are selling them on a first come, first serve basis. Are they off the hook for an immoral act? They definitely have made a decision based on economic advantage for them, at a huge one-sided disadvantage for the resident. During the Season, you will have to get there at the crack of dawn as Snowbirds come here for the beach!

A resolution amending the City’s Comprehensive Fee Schedule will be scheduled on April 15, 2014, to establish a seasonal resident fee as directed by the City Commission on March 18, 2014. The effective date of the resolution will be 10 days after approval of Ordinance No. 2014-10...just in time for the new decal permit year.

New decals go on sale May 1. Utilities Customer Service-- City Hall Annex-- 414 Lake Avenue. Get down there and get yours--they are unlimited...the entire city of residents AND non-residents can buy one as long as you live here for one year under a rental lease, or own residential property here.

**Although there are 50 spaces, the city's web site says:  The Beach Parking Decal Program was created as a benefit for residents of the City of Lake Worth. There are 42 designated parking spaces at the Lake Worth Beach for decal holders.  Click it on before it is changed.  (and what's scary--they too can make a mistake and they are the ones in charge!) Beach Decals are valid between May 1st through April 30th of the following year - however may be purchased at anytime. On top of everything else that is stupid, the City had been pro-rating them! That has now been deleted from the Ordinance.

Decal Parking at Lake Worth Beach

Comment Up

The lack of resident decal parking spaces has become a huge problem. One problem is a percentage of people who just will NOT follow the rules. I guess they are screaming the loudest just like those out of state/country Snowbirds who believe we owe them a living. One idiotic driver actually cut me off so that he could get to a space that didn't even exist.
Here were four cars in a full lot. There could have been many more--probably were. No tickets were seen; not a ticket attender in sight. The biggest abuse of our lot is on weekends.
Opening up residential decal permits to non-residents who own property here has to be the worst decision this year, or at least it ranks high on the list. During the winter Season, it will be very difficult for residents to park in their own lot as Snowbirds come here for our wonderful beach and a cheap vacation. It's easier to give-in to them than to say "no."
Residential parking decals have always been a benefit to residents and the point was to only have it a nominal fee as residents live here all year round, it's their beach and they actually use the beach and spend money there 12 months out of the year. Now this commission has stuck a dagger into their eye. They have made it virtually impossible to find a parking spot on weekends and holidays during high Season. They have handed over our 50 residential parking spots to Snowbirds, squeezing out the residents. Even when we had unlimited parking at the beach, Snowbirds were in a different category of parking decal; they paid double.
Now the city wants to charge the residents $40 and the Snowbirds $60 in order to use 50 spaces, a parking lot that was negotiated by former commissioner Cara Jennings for the residents. When we accepted the $5 million in bond money that we had been paying on since 2004, the county would not allow Lake Worth to open up the entire parking area for decal users. Even though it was our money, there were strings--30 years of them to be exact.

Common sense was not used by this commission. It was the easy way out to quiet the raving Snowbirds crying "foul" and "unfair," people who are in our city for a short time during the year and used the argument that they pay taxes.  So do business owners who are no more residents than Snowbirds.  Capitulating to the protester who pays property taxes but is a non-resident--the commission did not know how to deal with their organized outrage.  I can hear it now from the legal department--"oh, give in to them--we don't need anymore possible  litigious problems...we want all this garbage off our plates." There was even some Snowbird nut case who spoke in front of the commission who said it was "unfair" they couldn't vote here. And it is a slap down to year round residents after decades of decal parking permits given to them as a benefit. But this dais knows best.

The mayor says that this commission is listening to the residents.  In this regard, they only listened to non-residents and a few of their more unreasonable constituents and one who only goes to Benny's on the Beach for an occasional breakfast and who parks in handicapped parking for free.

Parking at Lake Worth beach

Comment Up

According to the vice mayor, someone who tells me I am not connecting the dots,  says we're not making any money at our beach park and it will be years before we do.

Thanks commissioners, especially Commissioner Szerdi for leading the vote on giving away our 50 decal parking spaces to non-residents. People were parking at the employee parking lot and every single space at Old Bridge Park was filled, no meters in view. People were parking at Bryant Park and on Golfview, walking over the bridge to go to the beach.
