Happy birthday to the Vice Mayor

The mayor gave a proclamation (a tongue in cheek mini roasting) last night for Scott Maxwell for his "100th" birthday. On cue, all those in the chamber said, "Thank you for coming in today," apparently a frequent expression used daily by Vice Mayor Scott Maxwell.

Happy Birthday, Vice Mayor.

Helen Score Webb
Looking great!

There are only three things that I regret leaving behind with my first husband over forty years ago:

My favorite Bible
Jackie Robinson's autograph
Herb Score's autograph

Helen Score Webb, sister of Herb Score the great pitcher who I saw play for the Cleveland Indians,  both are graduates of Lake Worth High School. She recently celebrated her 80th birthday. Friends sent her 136 cards in remembrance of her special day.

Lee Antieau, 97 years young

Comment Up

Last night we celebrated Lee Antieau's 97th birthday. It was a surprise by her husband, Gary. Lee reminded us that she was still 96 until Monday. Gosh, wouldn't you like to know her secret? Well, I asked. She eats healthy foods, plays at the arcade twice a week and luckily does not take one medicine. So you see, it's the damn medicine. I can blame it all on my doctor. :)

Happy 95th to Alma

Comment Up

I had the privilege of celebrating my friend Alma's 95th birthday. She takes no medicine. She doesn't have a wrinkle on her face. She is sharp as a tack and still drives a car. It is all in the genes, she says.

Quinceanera Party at Lake Worth Casino

Comment Up
Sweet 15 Birthday Celebration at the Lake Worth Casino
Saturday Night Quinceanera Honoree

Some Hispanic (Mexican) traditions have a religious origin. One of these is the "sweet fifteen" or "quinceañera" celebration, where the honored girl is "officially" presented before society, also making known that she is now available for marriage. The quinceanera is a young Hispanic woman's celebration of her fifteenth birthday. The quinceanera is considered to be the most important birthday as it symbolizes the transition from childhood to womanhood. This event is usually celebrated with an elaborate ritual.

As Hispanics migrate to the United States, these traditions are still prevalent and important and carried forward in many families.

Dining with the "enemy"

Comment Up

When I look back on how I was raised or even as a working adult, having a steak dinner was one heck of a treat. It was when something special had occurred--a birthday maybe, a graduation or perhaps a celebration and it was always with friends, you know, people who loved you and/or people who gave a damn.

With a menu of steak, salad, sautéed vegetables and coconut sorbet, certain GOP leaders dined with Obama last night. They were "bonding."  All of a sudden to Obama, the GOP was "family" as they dined in the Old Family Dining Room at the Whitehouse. They were there to listen to the Leader in Chief. Obama had released his budget earlier in the day--all $3.8 trillion of it and where he will be growing government, raising taxes on just about everyone, spending more and recalculating how seniors are paid for social security increases.

Also immigration reform was brought up by Marco Rubio who is being "creamed" by Democrats for his stands on just about everything because of the rumor he might run in 2016 on the national GOP ticket...see video below for the latest Democratic attack. I guess dining with the "enemy" is better than sleeping with them.

On Old things

Received an e-mail from an "old" classmate from Lake Worth High, Paul Darst:

Well, it was that day of the year Saturday -- Happy Birthday to me. My wife and I drove down to Apalachicola on Saturday and stayed the night at an old (1907) hotel there. For those of you who don't know, Apalachicola is one of the older cities in Florida, incorporated in 1827. It's located on Apalachicola Bay, where the Apalachicola River flows into the bay. Nearby are St. George Island and St. Vincent Island.

 Here is where Paul stayed:

Freedom of Information Day

"Freedom of Information Day" is celebrated annually on March 16, James Madison's  birthday.  James Madison was the fourth president of this great country and is widely known as an advocate for openness in government. He is hailed as the “Father of the Constitution” for being instrumental in the drafting of the United States Constitution and as the key champion and author of the United States Bill of Rights.

Madison and Thomas Jefferson organized what they called the Republican Party (later called by historians the Democratic-Republican Party).

Although the Vice Mayor, Scott Maxwell, called the requests for public information  "terrorist acts," I have to say that the City of Lake Worth has been cooperative in 99.9% of my requests. We have a terrific employee in Deborah Andrea in the City Clerk's office.

Architect's granddaughter of the 1922 Casino sends letter of congratulations

Congratulations sent to Dee McNamara--

Just wanted to congratulate you on your dress at Saturday night's opening of the Lake Worth Casino.
I remember 7 years ago, when I was visiting my parents (James Addison), you and I had a conversation about saving the Casino as my great grandfather had designed it. I'm so proud to see the completion of the project and know G. Sherman Childs would be proud as well.

My thanks to you and your husband for your steadfast determination to see that the project was as beautiful as the original building was! Wish I could have been there Saturday, but I plan to be down later this Spring.

Brenda Addison Watson

Editor's note:  G. Sherman Childs designed our original City Hall, the birthday Cake Castle as well as other properties. He came to Lake Worth from Minnesota in 1912. His daughter Jean was the first-born girl in the city and was the mother of our beloved, James Addison, who was here for the Centennial Ball.
