"Great Little Drinking town," Greg Rice called Lake Worth at one time

Party on the patio coming to an end?

Rudy's Pub hoping Lake Worth Beach won't pull plug on back lot

"Rudy's Pub, located on S. J Street in the Paradise building directly below the Bamboo Room, wants the back parking lot to use for their live performances. The city allowed them to utilize the lot during Covid on a temporary basis.

Now the City says, it's a parking lot and Rudy's Pub is violating city codes as well as the fact that state and county emergency orders that allowed that temporary use have expired.

The owner has hired Wes Blackman, an urban planner who has served on the city’s Planning and Zoning and historic preservation boards, to help negotiate a resolution that would allow the patio."

Another Bar to open in Lake Worth

Well, why not. This is a downtown full of bars and booze and probably "broads" as well as those who also drink kava and use vape. Now they will have a tattoo parlor to boot.

Read about it... and the Phoenix Bar soon to open on June 8th at the site of The Bamboo Room where the Common Ground Church was until recently.

The church wanted to buy the building but was priced out and has moved to 1201 S. Federal Highway. Andy Amoroso said the Common Ground Church was not suited to our downtown.

Preying on Weakness? A new store on Lake Avenue

Comment Up

As a former smoker of cigarettes, I quit the dangerous habit 31 years ago. I suppose I have a bigger aversion to smoking than someone who never smoked before as now just the smell of it makes me sick, in more ways than one. It is sad that another establishment like this is now operating in our downtown but until it becomes illegal, it's here.

On July 1, 2013 HB 49 became law that prohibits the retail sale of certain drug paraphernalia and provides for criminal penalties but you can still smoke the stuff.

720 Lake Avenue
President of this corporation is AHMAD R. AHMAD

People often believe that smoking from a hookah removes the nicotine and other  toxins from the tobacco. This is not true. The nicotine in hookah tobacco is addictive, and like cigarette smokers, people who smoke hookah are at risk for lung cancer, stomach cancer, cancer of the esophagus, respiratory diseases, heart disease, and fertility problems. Hookah Facts

The establishment already had 5 disciplinary warnings from the State in October and they were corrected six days later.

Lake Worth City Manager on top of Brawl in downtown Lake Worth

Comment Up

The City Manager is on top of the disgusting brawl and immoral behavior that occurred in our downtown. For those of you who haven't seen the video, Click here.

Lynn,

I saw this several days earlier.  It is a disgusting display of debauchery and what is most appalling is no one is calling the Sheriff.  I would guess the girl was more drunk than on flakka as she is still conversant.  Regardless this kind of public display is unacceptable.  I have already met with Captn Baer about the business and their problems and he is working with his deputies to address the situation going forward.

Strip Clubs in Palm Beach County

Comment Up

Great going Palm Beach County Commissioners.  Let the strippers into and around our residential neighborhoods and the MOB as well.

Double D strip club wins showdown
Palm Beach County Commissioners approved a zoning change today that will allow strip clubs like Double D Ranch & Saloon to be built and serve food.  Now you can dine and gawk all at the same time and probably eat one more chicken leg or two.  And just think, the Park of Commerce is zoned for this very thing!

Stitches has no one in stitches

Comment Up

This is what's going on in our downtown!  Incredible. If this is entertainment, then we all are in trouble. Lot's of crime is happening on J Street, so is that all just coincidental?  As the city tries to re-incorporate culture by attracting artists, we get Stitches?  Maybe they all can find a pothole or two.

The question that comes to mind is--Does this have anything to do with the new nightclub?

Sunday, March 30, 2014

Another Bar in Lake Worth

Well, why not? We just don't have enough of them.

This spot used to be Mojitos.  They weren't doing so well and demanded that the city allow them to become a nightclub so that they could stay opened to the wee hours of the morning. They stayed opened past legal hours anyway in spite of what the City said. It then turned into a gay and lesbian bar. Now we have Tequila Ron, a nightclub?

Vote the bums out - Stir the Political Pool

Comment Up
"Vote the bums out" was a William Coakly motto when he ran for mayor of Lake Worth a few years ago.

Today, 19 elections will be held in Palm Beach County.  Lake Worth is not among them. No one in the City of Lake Worth ran against the incumbents. If you think about it, all the ingredients necessary for a political explosion were in place. People have been fed up with the growing slum, blight and crime in Lake Worth. And even though ordinances have finally been passed to help correct the cancer that afflicts us, nothing changes. Emphasis is put on "shiny objects" and a plan to rebuild our 100 year old city's infrastructure to be paid by many struggling to survive.

This "visionary" commission has a huge problem-- they don't listen to the people for whom they serve. People are fed up with them and some top staff who do not return a call and who continually hit them aside the head with  baseball bats.  They're too busy or traveling to ports of call for the League of Cities or some other networking event. The people won an election a year ago but what did the city do?  They drew themselves into court now using city tax dollars against the people. They knew best and honestly believe they are smarter than the people. They should have honored the vote instead of using some trumped up State law after the fact. They listen to their "economic growth' supporters and believe the hype.

From the first day a Pioneer set foot here, this city has always been a middle-class town full of working folks raising families. Later, after development, we garnered a small percentage of retirees and Snowbirds...now we have thousands. It is a city comprised of  5.64 sq mi where 35,000 people live who want to have a nice quality of life and preserve their single family neighborhoods. Instead, we have a downtown full of bars, bikers and garbage galore but the commission's attitude of anything for a buck persists. Honky Tonk USA. And we have a commission that believes in growth at any and all costs. Low cost housing is prevalent with two rental projects now being built attracting more poor to our city.

We are not cleaning up the garbage and the filth. It is easier to give things away than to maintain them. We have attracted a lot of people who show no respect for the city they visit, or the one in which they own property, evidenced after a city event or a drive through the neighborhoods. Abandoned and stressed properties abound and they bring down the entire neighborhood and property values.

It is hard to defeat an incumbent. They are in office for at least two years and have built up connections and have raised money.  Even their campaign account balances are within the limit that can be rolled over to the next election. Good people, who would consider running, are maligned by that side even before they step into the arena to the point you wouldn't recognize them if they fell over you. Politics is slimy and cruel here and the lies grow like Pinocchio's nose. For a small city, it has to be the most vicious. Good people have literally dropped out.

So I suggest that you vote all incumbents out of office unless you actually find an ethical, honest, hard-working politician, one that is working for you and the overall good of the people--one who really supports the important issues, instead of just giving them lip service. They might deserve a second term in office. Other than that, vote them all out. By taking this approach, it will automatically stir the political pool until something more than scum rises to the top and we are able to identify people that are actually capable of doing a great job.

A second term should be a rarity in Lake Worth until we get our political act together. And we should never have people sliding into office with no opposition.

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day Pub Crawl in Lake Worth March 8

For Immediate Release
Contact: Keiran O'Shay 772.261.4360 / kaos@gothirdeyeadventures.com
Sláinte Pub Crawl
Saturday, March 8, 2014
Lake Worth, Fl.

Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Daoibh. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Of all the holidays we celebrate in the States, few are commemorated with less pretense than good old
St. Patrick’s Day.Wear green, kiss Irish people, and look for the pot 'o gold as you crawl, walk or gallivant from pub to pub in downtown Lake Worth while imbibing responsible amounts of green spirits and such. It's not
exactly how they do it back in the Old Country, but on the hole it's pretty low key and going to be more
fun than you can shake a shamrock at.

The Sláinte Pub Crawl (sláinte literally translating as "health" in Gaelic is a traditional drinking toast),
is the fifth “adventure” in a monthly Lake Worth 2nd Saturdays program (organized by Third Eye
Adventures) and serves as a warm-up to the Lake Worth St. Patrick’s Day celebration which occurs the
following weekend. Crawl registration starts at Brogues (621 Lake Ave., Lake Worth, Fl. 33460) at
6:00 PM Saturday, March 8, 2014. Would-be Irishmen/Irishwomen-for-a-day will be given the Wee
Leprechaun Map as they check-in. The map will aid them as they progress from watering hole to
watering hole and is key to garnering freebies & specials at participating bars. What's more, the map is
necessary to finding clues in the Luck of the Irish Treasure Hunt. Who will win the Leprechaun's Pot
'O Gold at the end of the night?

The Crawl itself starts around 6:45 PM at Brogues and includes some of the most fun, interesting and
inviting bars you'll find in Lake Worth.

For those that go green and dress the part, we will also have a It's a Wee Leprechaun Costume Contest
which is only limited by your imagination. Games, food, fun, music and free stuff! What more could
you ask for?! Oh, did we mention profits go to The RedTrunks Water Safety & Swim Program and
Wheels for Kids? A good time and you do a good service!

Sponsors include: Brogues, Rhum Shak, Dave's Last Resort & Raw Bar, South Shores Tavern & Patio
Bar, Rudy's Saloon, Igot's Martiki Bar, Speakeasy Lounge, Havana Hideout, Lake Worth Herald,
Trinkets & Treasures, The RedTrunks, LULA, and other local merchants.

Upcoming events include: April 26th: LDUB Zombie Crawl II (the rampage returns), May 10th: Sam
Adams Back to Boston Bar Crawl & Tap Takeover - Cheers to 30 years! (Flashback to Boston with an
*80's themed/costume bar crawl where you will enjoy a delightful selection of craft beers that you
won't be able to find anywhere else around here. What's more we're renaming our downtown streets
and bars to really put you into the mood).

Businesses preparing for onslaught of visitors to the Annual Street Painting Festival in Lake Worth

Comment Up

Downtown businesses are hustling and bustling to get ready for the biggest signature event of the year--

The Street Painting Festival

which will be held on Saturday and Sunday in Lake Worth.  Hopefully, merchants will make a lot of money, bars and restaurants will be filled day and night and the neighborhood associations will get lots of big tips for serving beer.

Tables, chairs and umbrellas have been placed in the alleyway adjacent to CJ's Bar and Grill. Someone has closed off the alleyway and are prepared to use it. A source tells me it all belongs to CJ's. The Sustainability Director has no knowledge of this and says, "To my knowledge no one has been given an exception including CJ's. And we have neither received nor reviewed a right of way use permit for this area."

Now I will have to hear from some of you saying, "Oh give the guy a break; he's just trying to make money...it's a special event..you're always so negative."

People who make decisions for you

Comment Up

City Board appointments ARE a big deal.  They have always been political. The reason that they are a big deal is that they are chosen by elected officials to make decisions that reflect the politics of those in power.  These men and women affect us all--such as how our city looks, how high buildings can go, how many bars are in the downtown, ooops, bars with restaurants, and the commission uses their recommendations as references of authority and often times to justify their decisions. The Planning & Zoning board as well as the Historical Board can make sole decisions without even going in front of the commission for approval. And of course, we must have "qualified" people to serve.

The commission made an Ordinance on February 5, 2013 amending the board appointment process-- that they no longer have to conduct public interviews for those wanting to get on city boards.  The appointments are all made behind closed doors out of the Sunshine.  The appointee, after chosen by a particular commissioner, then goes before the entire commission to ratify and agree with their comrade who made the recommendation. I would wager to say not one commissioner ever reads the bios on these appointees.

The Mayor has now appointed three people to the following boards with no information in the back-up on these individuals. The appointments are on the Consent Agenda.  You want to know who is making decisions for the city, then you have to pay for the information. The only reason that any discussion from the public is allowed on a Consent Agenda item now is because they have to allow it by law. In the past, if the item was not pulled for discussion, no input  from the public was allowed. So, basically, by providing no back-up information on these appointees, we are still in the dark, sanctioned by the least transparent city government in my memory.

Condensed information that I could conjure up:

Finance Advisory Board:  William Shinedling to fill an unexpired term ending on July 31, 2016
Credentials:  Graduate of Lake Worth High and long time resident. Retired from the U.S.A.F and U.S.P.O. He has an interest in government budgets and was the squadron wing budget manager when in the Air Force.

Recreation Board: Jason Vazquez to fill an unexpired term ending on July 31, 2016
Credentials: Mr. Vasquez lives on S. D Street and has been here for 1.5 years. With a college degree, he is a captain on the Neighborhood Enhancement team in his neighborhood for the CRA. Volunteered in clean-ups and the recent triathlon.   He has an interest in developing a curriculum for children and adults.

Planning & Zoning Board: Anthony Marotta to fill an unexpired term ending on July 31, 2016
Credentials:  He is a college graduate with a degree in marketing/business/finance. Presently a business owner in property management in WPB who lives on N. Lakeside Drive.  At the time of his application in November 2013, he had been a resident here for one month. He served on an HOA board for 10 years. Mr. Marotta says, "I have an interest in strategic urban planning and believe it is the cornerstone of a vibrant and economically sound community which benefits all stakeholders.
