Tom Cotton Targets Bureaucratic Red Tape on Eggs

Sen. Tom Cotton pushes regulatory reform bill to cut egg prices

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) is cracking open a plan to tackle soaring egg prices with a bold new bill.

Cotton’s proposed legislation, dubbed the Lowering Egg Prices Act of 2025, seeks to ease the burden of high egg costs by reshaping federal regulations to boost supply through surplus broiler hatching eggs redirected as pasteurized liquid egg products, as Fox News reports.

Egg prices have been a rollercoaster, hitting record highs of over $6 a dozen by March earlier this year, leaving consumers shell-shocked at the checkout. While prices have eased since then, the sting of those peaks still lingers in kitchen budgets across the nation. According to the USDA, large white eggs dropped about 17% to an average of $1.91 per dozen in the first week of December, though some markets like California remain stubbornly pricey.

Cotton isn’t just scrambling for attention -- he’s aiming to slice through what he sees as unnecessary government overreach in egg handling rules. His bill would push the FDA and USDA to rewrite policies from the Biden administration, allowing surplus eggs meant for broiler chicken production to enter the food supply instead of going to waste.

"Arkansas consumers have paid higher egg prices and faced egg shortages because of bureaucratic red tape that forces farmers to throw out hundreds of millions of usable eggs each year," Cotton told Fox News Digital.

"My bill will cut these excessive regulations and lower egg prices," Cotton added to Fox News Digital. If only every politician could deliver such a straightforward recipe for relief, we might not be so hard-boiled about government inefficiency.

Courts rule that the government must use funds for SNAP

Federal Judges Order USDA to Pay SNAP Benefits During Shutdown

42 million Americans rely on the program to buy food each month

This calculates out to 12.35% of our poulation on food assistance

Two federal judges on Oct. 31 said the U.S. Department of Agriculture is legally required to use emergency funds to pay out food stamps benefits during the government shutdown.

The Supplemental Nutrition and Assistance Program’s (SNAP’s) funding was set to lapse on Nov. 1 because of the government shutdown, potentially affecting the food security of more than 40 million Americans.

President Donald Trump responded to the rulings in a Truth Social post on Oct. 31. “I do NOT want Americans to go hungry just because the Radical Democrats refuse to do the right thing and REOPEN THE GOVERNMENT,” he said. “Therefore, I have instructed our lawyers to ask the Court to clarify how we can legally fund SNAP as soon as possible.”

A federal judge in Rhode Island ruled from the bench that the program must be funded using at least the contingency funds. U.S. District Judge Jack McConnell also asked for an update on progress by Monday.

Likewise, a federal judge in Massachusetts gave the administration until Monday to specify whether it would partially pay for SNAP benefits in November with contingency funds or fully pay for them with additional funding.

Food Stamp Fraud

Trump Admin Cracks Down on Recipients of Food Stamps

'Follow the law, full stop'

President Trump’s Department of Agriculture is cracking down. On Tuesday, officials announced new steps to block illegal immigrants from getting food stamps.

"U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins today directed the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) at the U.S. Department of Agriculture to immediately clarify and enforce all rules restricting its beneficiaries to U.S. citizens and legal residents only," the department said.

The move enforces Trump’s February 19 executive order. The goal? Stop taxpayer dollars from funding illegal immigration. "The days in which taxpayer dollars are used to subsidize illegal immigration are over," Rollins declared. "Today's directive affirms that the U.S. Department of Agriculture will follow the law—full stop."

Food stamp fraud has been a long-standing concern. Republicans, including Sen. Joni Ernst, have pushed for reforms. Ernst recently introduced a bill to address overpayments in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Congress questions US funding for 'potentially dangerous' Chinese bird flu research

US and Chinese Scientists Are Working in China to Develop New Deadly Viruses

Lawmakers are demanding answers after it was revealed the US is sending taxpayer dollars to a Chinese army lab to make bird flu viruses more dangerous to people.

Eighteen members of Congress are demanding answers from the Department of Agriculture (USDA) about the project, which was first revealed by DailyMail.com.

It is part of a $1million collaboration between the USDA and the CCP-run Chinese Academy of Sciences – the institution that oversees the Wuhan lab at the center of the Covid lab-leak theory.

The research involves infecting ducks and geese with different strains of viruses to make them more infectious, and studying the viruses’ potential to ‘jump into mammalian hosts,’ according to research documents obtained by the watchdog group White Coat Waste Project.

Government over-reach...tyranny?

Government Officials Raid Pennsylvania Man’s Farm Without Notice

Essentially what the government did was to break their own law.

The taxpayer-funded bureaucrats then made off with a sizable portion of Miller’s income. He is out of business for the moment.

They ignored reporters questions.

The state’s own rules require advance notice, reasonable time frames for inspections, and a showing of credentials, none of which occurred here.

Instead, the state unlawfully obtained a search warrant, based on materially false statements in an affidavit by a high-ranking state official in an agency with a known grievance against independent farmers like Amos, and, after the raid and finding no evidence of wrongdoing, then illegally ordered detained every item of food in one of Amos Miller’s coolers, including buffalo meat not even subject to federal regulation.
