Lake Worth Middle School shooter shares ‘biggest regret,’ hopes for second chance after prison release

A shooting happened in the final minutes of the final day of school before summer break, just outside a classroom at Lake Worth Middle School.

Investigators said one shot was fired by a 13-year-old student, claiming the life of beloved teacher Barry Grunow.

It’s been more than 25 years since the shooting on May 26, 2000. The shooter, Nathaniel Brazill, was ultimately convicted of second-degree murder and aggravated assault with a weapon without intent to kill.

With less than three years left on his 28-year prison sentence, Brazill spoke one-on-one with WPTV anchor Hollani Davis inside Quincy Annex, a correctional institution outside Tallahassee, about the moment that changed his life and his decades behind bars.

“I don’t remember pulling the trigger,” Brazill recalled. “I think the gun went off, and then I ran.”

Earlier in the day, Brazill was suspended for his involvement in a water balloon fight. Investigators said the seventh-grade student left school, went home to retrieve a gun he stole from his grandfather, and returned to campus.

School surveillance video shows Brazill walking down a hallway just moments before he fired a single shot at Grunow.

Brazill told WFLX he wanted to say goodbye to two of his best friends before summer break, but Mr. Grunow would not let him inside his classroom. That’s when Brazill pulled out a 25-caliber handgun and shot Grunow in the head.

Lake Worth Beach wants to cut down this Oak Tree on Lake Avenue

I posted this on my Facebook page yesterday but decided to feature it here as well.

It seems the City is in a qauandry...they don't know how to repair the sidewalk in front of Dave's Last Resort without cutting down this beautiful old Oak tree.

Instead of coming up with better solutions, the easy way out is to cut it down.

A few comments:

Tom Poore: That’s a live oak tree it took lots of years to get that big they should dig up the sidewalk 10 ft around the base of the tree and bring in some mulch around the base and leave the tree be it takes years for a live oak to get that big.

The Ethics complaint was initiated by Vice Mayor Sarah Malega who brought it up for a vote at a commission meeting to proceed with an ethics complaint advisory opinion. The entire Commission voted 5/0 (including Commissioner McVoy).

Following is Commissioner McVoy's reply to the General Counsel, Rhonda Ginger, of the Palm Beach County on Ethics:

"Good morning Counsel Giger, Thank you for your important work on behalf of improved governance for the residents of Palm Beach County. I am sure that it is not always easy. (But I am confident that it is providing excellent qualifications should you ever decide on a career change to refereeing professional hockey!)

My answers for right now may be incomplete as I’m supposed to be adjusting this week’s balance of science / public service toward the science side, that is attending the Greater Everglades Ecosystem Research conference.

My nominal employer, South Florida Engineering and Consulting (SFEC) has long supported my public service by allowing me very generous flexibility in working hours and quantity. In theory, serving as City Commissioner is a part time position, recompensed at $24K/yr. In practice, for me it is much closer to full time work. This is reflected in my SFEC W-2 which indicated that in 2024 I earned less than $97 (yes, less than one hundred $$) from SFEC. I think I did a bit better in 2023, but doubt that it was much over several thousand dollars. (Good thing my wife has a job!) I will send W-2’s when get a chance to dig them out.

SFEC does not have a board. To my knowledge I have always been an employee, not a contractor for SFEC, though given the limited hours, “honorary employee” might be a more accurate description. My wife has nothing to do with SFEC, nor do any other family members.

You will forgive me if I editorialize: Vice Mayor Malega’s allegation, if I understood it correctly, that I was required to recuse myself from any votes regarding a downtown development project, is in my opinion patently incorrect. Again if I understood correctly, she was asserting an old canard, that somehow I was basing my votes on influencing the existence of a federal HUBzone (sp?) that is adjacent(?) to the SFEC office. This is not only 100% false, but mechanistically somewhat ridiculous and 100% insulting.

Impuning motives is always risky business. I can assure you that my choice to serve, at the expense of my scientific research, is simply to try to do the greatest good for the broadest cross-section of the Lake Worth community. My votes have never, and will never, have anything to do with SFEC. They are always guided by my best efforts to make informed votes that, as best as I can discern, will bring the broadest benefit to the residents of Lake Worth.

City commissioners raise possibility to Palm Beach in latest sand fight

"IF THE TOWN of Palm Beach tries to drive truckloads of sand down the middle of Lake Worth Beach’s popular public beach in January, don’t be surprised if throngs of protesters form a human barrier block the convoy.

That was the stark warning issued to town officials Tuesday night from city commissioners reacting to emails from angry city residents opposed to the town’s latest strategy to use the city’s public beach for a beach renourishment project.

On Dec. 3, city commissioners voted 4-1 to allow the town to access the south end of the city beach because they weren’t aware of the 2009 prohibition, which was never codified in the city charter when voters passed the referendum. When reminded of the charter violation nine days later by former city commissioner Cara Jennings, the city attorney said the Dec. 3 vote was moot.

When the city told Palm Beach officials they could not grant access to town trucks, the town countered by citing the 1935 state law, setting up a tense discussion Tuesday night at City Hall between city commissioners and Strayer. Palm Beach Mayor Danielle Moore also attended the meeting."

Palm Beach is determined to run trucks down and back through our beach to deliver sand in the month of January before turtle season. Our residents spoke out last night--and one was former commissioner Cara Jennings who originally brought forth the 2009 vote of the residents disallowing this.

Residents last night were furious about it, and rightfully so. Some speaking were environmentalist Jill Karlin and dive expert Dan volker indicating SEVERE DESTRUCTION OF THE MARINE LIFE OF HORSESHOE REEF could/will be destroyed by this action. Others condemned our own commission for voting for this on December 3 and pointed out that Commissioner McVoy was the only one voting "no" and looking after our interests.

Three finalists chosen to replace MLK mural in downtown Lake Worth Beach — Which is your favorite?

"Three Palm Beach County-based artists have been selected as finalists for a large-scale public mural in downtown Lake Worth Beach.

The winning mural will be chosen by the end of June to replace the fading Martin Luther King Jr. mural on the south exterior wall of the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County building at 601 Lake Ave.

The MLK mural, painted in 2017 by renowned Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra, will be removed in the coming weeks as construction crews repair cracks and leaks in the wall. When the repairs are completed, the new mural will be painted, with an expected completion by early fall.

The three finalists for the new mural, chosen from 12 submissions, are West Palm Beach-based artist team Anón, made up of husband and wife Jhonattan and Samantha Arango; West Palm Beach-based artist Craig McInnis; and Boca Raton-based artist Trinity Rivard."

Illegal alien arrested for alleged kidnap, sexual assault of 11-year-old girl

A 20-year-old undocumented migrant has been arrested for allegedly snatching an 11-year-old girl off the street in front of her Florida home and sexually assaulting her.

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, Marvin Dionel Perez Lopez grabbed the 11-year-old by the hand and forced her into his van where he began assaulting her.

Investigators say Marvin Perez Lopez, 20, fled from the vehicle. The child exited after him, her legs bloodied and bare.

The sheriff’s office said Perez Lopez is from Guatemala and crossed the border from Mexico in January. They said he surrendered to Border Patrol, was given a court date in 2027 and was released.

“He’s going to get tried for a capital crime before he even remotely thinks he’s going to get deported,” Bradshaw said. “He’s going to do the time here first.”

Perez Lopez is currently being held without bond in the Palm Beach County jail.

This is the scum we are attracting to our country and to our city all because of Biden's open border policy. Lake Worth loves diversity, well here it is at its worst!

The bogus ad was emailed last month to dozens if not hundreds of city residents, presumably by a supporter of Lake Worth Beach Commissioner Kim Stokes, May’s opponent in the March 19 election. Stokes, a registered Democrat, said neither she nor her campaign had anything to do with the fake flyer."

That's another thing, Democrats ALWAYS lie!

At 8:12 a.m. on May 4, 2021, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived at a home on South 'M' Street in Lake Worth Beach to conduct a welfare check. They smelled the odor of decomposition and found the body of Jeffrey Pugh Jr., 30.

Jasmine Phillips Bent had been charged with second-degree murder but took a plea deal Friday. Circuit Court Judge Caroline Shepherd scheduled formal sentencing for 8:30 a.m. Dec. 19.

She fled the scene and covered-up evidence and will only get 18 years for shooting someone to death!

Residents of Lake Worth Beach got together to advocate for two of the area's historically Black cemeteries on Tuesday night, forming a human chain around one of them. "To make it look presentable, safe and secure for our loved ones we have back here," Retha Lowe, one of the organizers, said. "You have people drinking, throwing trash here on A Street, defecating here. It's not right," activist Hazzler Decime said.

"To me, it's a simple ask," Commissioner Sarah Malega said. "We should've done this years ago. We own the cemeteries. It's our responsibility."

THE PARADISE BUILDING, home to two popular downtown Lake Worth Beach music venues, is for sale.

The historic 1923 building at 17 S. J St., home to the Bamboo Room and Rudy’s Pub, went on the market Sept. 5 as “a new commercial listing,’’ according to the Facebook page of Simon Isaacs Real Estate, a Palm Beach broker.

Asking price: $2,975,000.

But the building’s owner, Gary Goldring, said the listing doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to actually sell. (Is he just screwing around wasting people's time?)

“We are seeing what the market looks like, which when you're in the real estate business is an OK thing to do from time to time,’’ Goldring said in an interview.

“We are listing it for sale just to kind of see what the market is and we’ll see what happens,’’ he said. (There's a sucker born every minute who might find this to be a wonderful buy!)

Goldring, a former Wall Street executive and a current part-owner of the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team, bought the 8,142-square-foot building in 2019 for $1.3 million. He invested in upgrades and renovations.

Lake Worth Beach becomes Florida's first sanctuary city for LGBTQ+ community

(CBS12) — On Tuesday night, the City Commission of Lake Worth Beach declared the city a sanctuary city for LGBTQ+ individuals and their families.

“Lake Worth Beach is a vibrant and diverse city with a proud history of embracing the gay community,” said Mayor Betty Resch. “Today we continue that tradition by ensuring our city remains a welcoming place for LGBTQ+ people.”

According to the city, the resolution says “the City of Lake Worth Beach shall now and forever be considered a safe place, a sanctuary, a welcoming and supportive city for LGBTQIA+ individuals and their families to live in peace and comfort” and that “the City Commission of Lake Worth Beach firmly states its commitment to protecting human rights for all individuals and believes that access to healthcare, education and peaceful enjoyment of their lives are fundamental rights to all people in the City.”

This is very important to liberals. Gays have always been welcomed here with zero discrimination so this is just indulging a segment of our society and the commission attempting to prove how diverse they are. It is an unnecessary resolution but it "feels good."

A Lake Worth Beach motel owner led detectives to arrest a man and woman allegedly involved in sex trafficking after he alerted deputies in Lake Worth Beach and saved two minors.

Lake Worth Beach commissioners ready to dive into deeper, pricier swimming pool design

DESIGN A DEEPER multi-use public swimming pool, Lake Worth Beach city commissioners told a consultant eight months ago.

On Aug. 15, a new rectangular design for a deeper and more expensive oceanfront swimming pool will be presented to commissioners.

This one has depths ranging from 3 feet to 10 feet, starting with the shallowest section on the north end of the pool and the deepest sarees at the south end, according to an architectural rendering in the commission’s agenda.

The previous version, presented to the commission Dec. 6, called for a $12 million pool no more than 4 feet deep. That drew sharp criticism from commissioners, who a few days later at an agenda-review meeting questioned why CPZ Architects would design such a shallow pool to replace the city’s shuttered public pool at the beach casino.
