Mural artist to be chosen for 601 Lake Avenue

Three finalists chosen to replace MLK mural in downtown Lake Worth Beach — Which is your favorite?

"Three Palm Beach County-based artists have been selected as finalists for a large-scale public mural in downtown Lake Worth Beach.

The winning mural will be chosen by the end of June to replace the fading Martin Luther King Jr. mural on the south exterior wall of the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County building at 601 Lake Ave.

The MLK mural, painted in 2017 by renowned Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra, will be removed in the coming weeks as construction crews repair cracks and leaks in the wall. When the repairs are completed, the new mural will be painted, with an expected completion by early fall.

The three finalists for the new mural, chosen from 12 submissions, are West Palm Beach-based artist team AnĂ³n, made up of husband and wife Jhonattan and Samantha Arango; West Palm Beach-based artist Craig McInnis; and Boca Raton-based artist Trinity Rivard."

I guess if I have to choose one, all far removed from MLK, I like Trinity Rivard, Telling A Story. Which one do you like?

The Mural was the only thing Divisive and Racist

Couple who painted over ‘Black Lives Matter’ street mural charged with a hate crime

"Across the country, hundreds of looters and rioters have been let off the hook thanks to local prosecutors like Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx, a black woman who last week instructed her office to drop misdemeanor charges — and even some felonies — against local rioters because, you know,'rioting is the language of the unheard.

Yet over in California, a white couple who were caught on video simply painting over a city-approved Black Lives Matter mural now face not only vandalism charges, but hate crime charges as well thanks to Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton, a black woman."

Reverse Racism in Lake Worth

Comment Up

God, is no one happy here?  You can't win no matter what you do.  Now someone is pissed off because of a mural on the rear side of La Joya Villages depicting a white boy and painted by an artist trying to give a little beauty back to the area. Get a freaking life, complainer!

Getting into the spirit of an eclectic Lake worth

Comment Up

No, this isn't a jump start on a house painting festival but perhaps it is a start of a trend in Lake Worth. We are getting some wild colors popping up.

Jump Start

Jump Start--That's the name--what about the action? Does this mean this is the first of more house murals to come? More pizazze? More color? More funky art? More interaction by owners with the P&Z and Historic boards? Or does it mean more owners doing their own thing without any approval? According to a member of the Planning and Zoning board, that's apparently what happened here.

Who's to say it's just not a creative paint job and they didn't need permission?

City Hall Annex in Lake Worth

Still an old, proud building, the original Lake Worth City Hall also known as the Lake Worth City Hall Annex, is an historic site in Lake Worth, Florida. It is located at 414 Lake Avenue. It is comprised of 13,266 sq. ft and is currently appraised at $1,749,699.

The building originally served as Lake Worth's elementary school until June 1928. North Grade and South Grade Elementary Schools opened the following fall. The building was subsequently remodeled to provide for the Commission Chamber and administrative offices. I remember when it was the headquarters for our police department back in the 60's. Later on it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on  May 18, 1989.

The Lake Worth Historical Museum is located on the second floor, and features antiques, tools, clothing, photographs, and other local and historic artifacts. It is manned by volunteers on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1pm to 4pm. Susan Ona was volunteering while I was there.

Who knows what's going on at the City Hall Annex. What used to be a very active and buzzing building is virtually quiet now. When you enter customer service, all you see is the area where you can pay your utility bill.  There are two windows opened to serve the public. If you have a problem with your bill or need a question answered, you move to another area of the first floor where you take a number and are serviced by two employees who appear to be bi-lingual.  The interior is clean and neat, what you can see of it, but just about every door is locked to the public.

The exterior grounds are a mess with leaves and berries that have been stomped to a pulp on the sidewalks. The Cultural Plaza is still visited by the homeless who read the inscriptions of Martin Luther King.

The City administration has our City Hall Annex historical building destined to be used for the arts--probably the CRA--and say they will spend $1 million doing it! If we are going to renovate a building and spend one dime of taxpayer money, why not use it for city employees, some of whom are working out of trailers.

Wells Fargo Bank Mural

Murals are the thing in Lake Worth these days.  They are popping up all over the place. This one is located and erected inside of Wells Fargo Bank on Lake Avenue and Federal Highway. It is a mural of photos taken 100 years ago or so, all assembled in a huge collage that looks like a painting. I was told it was by an artist from California.

Can one of our local artists check this out and tell us how/what technique was used to create this wonderful piece?
