Homeless Fraud in Los Angeles

Trump admin unearths $75M in ‘homeless industrial complex’ fraud

The federal taxpayer dollars were spent on Los Angeles mansions, luxury vehicles, pricey vacations, and paying bail for domestic assault charges. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Turner pledged, “No more.”

Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner announced Sept. 16 that his agency had identified approximately $75 million laundered through homeless services, mostly in California.

States and cities receiving federal taxpayer dollars to support homeless people funneled that money into nonprofit and non-governmental organizations, where the taxpayer dollars were spent on lavish vacations, private jets, luxury automobiles, opening nightclubs, and other personal ventures, according to the announcement.

The “homeless industrial complex,” as Turner called it, involves nonprofits and non-governmental organizations that take federal taxpayer dollars, administered by states, and register non-existent identities as “homeless people” receiving aid, when no such people exist and no aid is given to real homeless people.

LA Homeless Services spent $513mil but could not account for one dime

Trump Cuts Ties with Los Angeles Homeless Agency Over Obvious Fraud

For years now, Americans have watched billions of their hard-earned tax dollars vanish into government “homelessness programs” that somehow never manage to solve homelessness. Progressive city leaders announce bold spending initiatives. Nonprofits line up at the trough.

Bureaucracies balloon. And the tent cities? They just keep growing. The Trump administration’s fraud task force, led by Vice President JD Vance, is finally exposing how deep the rot actually runs.

What they’re uncovering should infuriate every American who pays taxes. From the Midwest to the West Coast, the task force is finding a disturbing pattern: blue-state governments treating federal dollars like Monopoly money — or worse, like a personal piggy bank for well-connected insiders. But no city illustrates the scandal quite like Los Angeles.

From Fox News:

A top Trump agency is cutting off funding to the Los Angeles agency responsible for coordinating billions in homelessness spending after accusing it of “obvious fraud,” “wanton mismanagement” and repeated failures to safeguard taxpayer dollars, Fox News Digital has learned.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which is a member of the White House fraud task force led by Vice President JD Vance, is immediately suspending the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority’s (LAHSA) federal funding while HUD’s inspector general investigates potential offenses by the agency and its leadership.

The City Controller’s Office found that LAHSA failed to spend $513 million in public funds during fiscal year 2024. The excuse? Not enough staff and outdated technology. So they couldn’t spend the money. And when they did manage to spend it, they couldn’t tell anyone where it went. Remarkable.

Payments went to Dead People and Illegals

Report Reveals $5.8 Billion in ‘Questionable’ Payments to Dead Tenants and Non-Citizens Under Biden

There’s an old saying about trust: it takes years to build and seconds to destroy.

The same might be said of taxpayer dollars—earned through sweat and sacrifice, collected by a government that promises to spend them wisely, and supposedly directed toward those who genuinely need help. Most Americans accept that some of their hard-earned money will go toward keeping vulnerable neighbors housed. That’s the deal we make.

But here’s the thing about deals: they only work when both sides hold up their end. What happens when the people entrusted with billions simply stop paying attention? Or worse, what if they never really cared to begin with?

A damning new report from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development answers that question in devastating detail. According to HUD’s Agency Financial Report for fiscal year 2025, approximately $5.8 billion in federal rental assistance went to “questionable” recipients during fiscal year 2024 alone—out of roughly $50 billion distributed that year.

Let that sink in: more than one in ten dollars went somewhere it probably shouldn’t have.

Eric Adams offered a job with HUD?

Reports: Trump Offers Adams Job to Exit Mayoral Race

author New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been reluctant to abandon his bid for reelection — but an influential post in President Donald Trump’s administration could incentivize him to bow out and make it easier to halt Zohran Mamdani’s rise.

Adams has been offered a position at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, according to a person with direct knowledge of the offer who was granted anonymity to speak candidly about a sensitive matter.

The mayor, who has a friendly working and political relationship with Trump, met with the president’s team during his visit Tuesday to Florida, two people familiar with the plans said.

A White House official would neither confirm nor deny that Trump advisers are talking with Adams.

Executive Order to Aid Veterans

Forget Illegals – Trump Signs Order Helping Homeless Veterans

SOME HIGHLIGHTS OF ORDER:

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered:
  • Sec. 1. The VA campus in West Los Angeles will become the National Center for Warrior Independence with facilities and resources to help our veterans earn back their self-sufficiency.
  • Sec. 2. Within 120 days of the date of this order, present an action plan to the President, through the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy, to meet these directives and restore the capacity to house up to 6,000 homeless veterans at the National Center for Warrior Independence by January 1, 2028.
  • Sec. 3. Voucher Program. The Secretary of Housing and Urban Development shall, in consultation with the Secretary, use vouchers to support homeless veterans in the Los Angeles metropolitan area and around the Nation with respect to this effort.
  • Sec. 4. Restore Accountability at the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Sec. 5. Provide Choices and Excellence to Veterans. The Secretary shall take steps to increase the excellence of and options for care, benefits, and services for veterans
  • Sec. 6. This order shall be implemented consistent with applicable law and subject to the availability of appropriations.
Yet the Federal Government has not always treated veterans like the heroes they are. During the previous administration, unaccountable bureaucrats treated them shamefully, failing veterans when they needed help most and betraying the taxpayers who rightfully expect better.

Trump Tweets and California's Homeless Problem

TRUMP TWEETS: UNLEASHES on Pelosi over homeless crisis, blasts Dems

Donald J. Trump ✔ @realDonaldTrump Nancy Pelosi’s District in California has rapidly become one of the worst anywhere in the U.S. when it comes to the homeless & crime. It has gotten so bad, so fast - she has lost total control and, along with her equally incompetent governor, Gavin Newsom, it is a very sad sight! 93.9K 7:59 AM - Dec 26, 2019.
  • A recent report from the Department of Housing and Urban Development found Democrat-controlled states had the highest rates of homelessness
  • New York, Hawaii, California and Washington  state topped the list
And it's all about leadership or lack thereof but there is one little caveat here--Donald Trump Jr. is dating Gavin Newsom's ex-wife. There has to be something personal with him that is triggering all of this sparing back and forth.

Newsom says that California’s failure to curb rising homelessness in cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco is the fault of President Donald Trump and the Trump Administration. Sounds just like a liberal.

The Rude Left

Democrats keep dishing out the dirt and being obnoxious--

On Tuesday, HUD Secretary Ben Carson had a contentious exchange with hard-left freshman Congressman Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), who obviously feels very empowered, during which she insulted him by telling him he was “unqualified” for his job and said he was “carrying the water of what I believe to be one of the most morally bankrupt presidents in our nation’s history.” Maybe she's the one who is unqualified.

Read about the deplorable Left

that believes its perfectly acceptable to be rude and full of venom and believes in freedom of speech except when it comes from a Republican. How dare this witch Democrat be so insulting to a professional? Whatever happened to manners?

Ben Carson on Public Housing for Illegals

Carson clashes with Dems over proposal to block illegal immigrants from public housing

"Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Ben Carson faced harsh criticism from Democrats on Tuesday, as he fielded questions at a Capitol Hill hearing on a proposed rule change that would strip public housing assistance for illegal immigrants.

The proposal notes that existing law prohibits the government from providing housing assistance to those in the country illegally, and allows Carson to strip assistance from anyone receiving it improperly but bleeding heart Democrats keep defending and insist on supporting illegals at tax payer expense under the guise of being compassionate and humane.

Oh God, look what Obama's doing now

Comment Up

Obama wants to regulate diversity in the white suburbs. As he wants equal opportunity for all and wants to control federal housing grants unless affordable housing is built in the more affluent neighborhoods, can we speed up the November 2016 election?

Affordable Housing Rentals on Lake Worth Road

Comment Up

We continue to get the political bull from one commissioner in particular, that the rental rates that Affordable Housing Solutions is charging for the Villages of Lake Worth a/k/a/ the "project" at Lake Worth Road and Boutwell is NOT affordable housing at all but "workforce" housing and it is at market rate. The city continues to try and fool you saying that there is a difference in 'affordable" and "workforce" housing. The Vice Mayor will even ask for confirmation on the distinction from the city manager, to get it on the record.  We all know it is one and the same. And at every commission meeting, there is always one commissioner who will tell us how beautiful this all looks. And they are building more.

The Villages of Lake Worth, located at 2220 Lake Worth Road have rents from $990 for a one bedroom up to $1,390 for a 3 bedroom. They do not have efficiency or 4 bedroom apartments.

What HUD considers affordable:

Lake Worth Towers - Government Creep?

Comment Up

This is a not-for-profit building registered with the State in 1965 and sponsored by the Nazarene Church on a 99 year government loan.  It is non-profit housing for Seniors.

According to a source, the city has come up with a scheme for more revenue--it is going to inspect each apartment looking for code violations starting this morning. They expect the inspections to be finished by Thursday. According to the source,  those residing there are not under a lease so the city, along with the building manager, can just knock and enter their living quarters and look for violations. Tell me it ain't so. This is the first time ever Lake Worth has gone after Lake Worth Towers in its nearly 50 years existence. Is it about income generation for this desperate city? Also I have been told that the city was looking to implement a rental license fee on the building, taxing each unit...as well as sending in the ADA to ensure they are in compliance.  As one person said, this is "Government Creep."

Lake Worth Towers consists of 195 units of various sizes. Each unit is charged based on its square footage and on the total expenses. The Towers is tax exempt. In 2014, it paid: $19,500 for solid waste and $3,391.42 for stormwater.

HUD rent subsidies apply and some are subsidized by the Florida Housing Finance Corporation. It is considered affordable housing for the elderly.

According to LWT’s bylaws, the affairs of the Corporation are managed by a Board of Directors, consisting of eleven directors. The membership in the Corporation is personal and not transferable. No compensation is paid to the directors for their services.

I guess the city feels if we can't get it (money) legitimately by the vote of the people, we will get it any way that we can?  In this case it will be from the most poor and vulnerable in our city, the elderly.  Who or what is next?  Churches? You just can't stop government creep once it begins.

New Obama rule will trump local cities zoning laws

Comment Up

This has to do with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) regulation, “Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing.”  In a press statement, “This proposed rule represents a 21st century approach to fair housing, a step forward to ensuring that every American is able to choose to live in a community they feel proud of—where they have a fair shot at reaching their full potential in life,” said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan.

Under the regulation, the Obama administration will be empowered to condition eligibility for community development block grants on redrawing zoning maps to create evenly distributed neighborhoods based on racial composition and income. This will be in effect October this year.  Read more...

HUD has been sneaking around our community for the past year or so even trying to make cases on Boards of Directors that have rejected some buyers even though background checks have supported the rejections.  They are committing an illegal act by "steering" but hey, the government gets away with anything. One association in my community was sued for not taking a woman with a baby even though we are an over 55 community. They don't care about that.  They make it into a racial thing (they read Rules for Radicals) to justify their cushy federal paychecks and retirement benefits.

Read about HUD takes control of local zoning

As you worry about potholes and you are made to feel guilty about any doubts you have on a long-term debt and not committing to 34 years of it or they tell you that you don't really care about your city, you had best worry about this.

Thanks to this commission, we have more affordable housing than in any time in our history.  They want you to pay for infrastructure for developers but they have approved of all this low cost housing and as such, have encouraged more poor to live in our city. Our entire town could be Section 8. Then, who in the hell is going to care about a pothole?

Grabbing the Money

Comment Up
Top headlines in today's Post:   City (West Palm Beach) on hook for HUD's $1.3 million.

The problems with this department go back as far as the 1980's. There have always been questions and charges of fraud and spending or just bad accounting. Four Palm Beach County Housing Authority employees were arrested in 2011 on charges of fraud and official misconduct, accused of abusing Section 8 housing benefits for their own benefit.

May 31, 2012:  Feds swoop in on West Palm Beach housing Authority

May 17, 2014:  Work was done says housing Authority

It is situations such as this that make residents very leery, and rightfully so, when voting to give officials $63.5 million dollars that will really cost them $131 million--all will go to the voters in Lake Worth this August. There is and has been too much corruption in Palm Beach County and Lake Worth's 2020 plan is lacking in details. What they tell us is never what they mean and all subject to change.

Economic Development is not the Cure-All

Comment Up
View from my dining room window

Affordable Housing Solutions, LLC bought 3.3730 acres at the corner of Boutwell and Lake Worth Roads in February of 2013. They paid $2,250,000, an astounding price when you consider that the last sale in April 2003 was $750,000. Just fourteen years ago the same property sold for $250,000.

Our newly "elected" commission voted in this affordable 216 unit rental project called The Villages of Lake Worth. Although it is the same, they deny that this is "affordable" housing because the developer is calling it "workforce" housing which promotes a better and more acceptable image. He is charging $900 for a one bedroom. When people think of affordable housing projects, they think the recipients are moochers who are getting something for nothing. If you call it workforce housing, they think of nurses and police officers. Marketing is everything.

This commission has voted in more low cost housing projects than any other in the history of Lake Worth---all for a supposed tax base.  They call this economic development and instinctively assume that prosperity and jobs will follow this development and that any development is the long-term answer.

The West Palm Beach-Boca Raton, FL HUD Metro FMR Area is made up of the following:
Palm Beach County, FL.

FY2014 Fair Market Rent Summary according to HUD

Palm Beach County, Florida
Efficiency 1 Bedroom 2 Bedrooms 3 Bedrooms 4 Bedrooms
Final FY2014 FMRs $750 $962 $1,202 $1,623 $1,938

I worry that they are just adding to the slum and blight that will breed more crime and have sold the city down the river to more despair. This could be the start of big problems in my neighborhood area, a neighborhood that has been in existence for close to 60 years and one that has been relatively quiet when it comes to crime.

A view from my living-room window.

This was another corrupt decision by people who didn't have backbones and this commission has used the pitiful proceeds from this bad decision for everything but its intended use. Resolutions are as good as the paper on which they are written or the memories of the people for whom they serve.

Materio grills housing executive

Comment Up

“All of those things are based on our execution of your plan. The one that you approved,” Martin Larsen said. “(If) there are problems in your plan, you created them.”

“So it’s our fault that nothing got done,” Commissioner Shanon Materio, former member of the Lake Worth CRA, said to Community Redevelopment Associates CEO, Martin Larsen
