Sen. Tim Scott, the South Carolina Republican who chairs the National Republican Senatorial Committee, accused The New York Times and senior Senate Democrats of coordinating to suppress damaging allegations against Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner, buying time, Scott charged, for the party to protect a seat it desperately needs.

The accusation follows a week in which Platner's candidacy collapsed. A bombshell report alleged the Democrat raped his ex-girlfriend, Jenny Racicot. Democratic lawmakers and organizations abandoned him almost overnight, a dramatic reversal from months of institutional backing.

But Scott says the reversal came far too late, and that the people now running from Platner are the same ones who propped him up while warning signs piled up for nearly a year.

The real question, in Scott's telling, is why a newspaper of record and a political party both sat on what they knew.

Morris Katz, an adviser to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, traveled to Sullivan, Maine, on Wednesday to huddle with Graham Platner's campaign staff at the embattled Senate nominee's home, days before a state-law deadline that will determine whether Democrats can replace Platner on the ballot at all.

Platner, an oyster farmer who won over 150,000 votes in the Democratic primary, has refused to withdraw from Maine's U.S. Senate race despite a rape allegation from a former girlfriend, public demands from his own party's biggest names, and a threat from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to abandon the contest entirely if he stays in.

The Wednesday gathering, which included campaign manager Ben Chin, field director Spencer Toth, digital communications consultant Ryan Aquilina, and Chin's deputy Eleni Neyland, was not a surrender session. The New York Post reported that Katz and the campaign brass were plotting how Platner could "remain a voice" in the race regardless of whether he eventually steps aside.

A source familiar with the deliberations told the Post that Katz believes Platner should leave before the Monday deadline but wants the exit to happen "on the candidate's terms."

That framing has infuriated Democrats up and down the party structure.

The most consequential blow came from party leadership. Schumer and Gillibrand issued a joint statement through the DSCC that went beyond moral disapproval and into raw political hardball:

"Graham Platner needs to immediately withdraw as the Democratic nominee for Senate and allow Maine Democrats the opportunity to choose a new candidate who can defeat Susan Collins. The DSCC will not invest in the Maine Senate race if Platner remains on the ballot."

That statement carries real weight. Without DSCC money, a Senate campaign in a competitive state is effectively dead on arrival.

The party's campaign arm didn't just ask Platner to leave. It told him the money spigot was already shut.

Graham Platner, the progressive Democrat in Maine's Senate primary, stood before supporters in Portland on Sunday night and called Sen. John Fetterman "an a**hole", out loud, on camera, two days before voters headed to the polls.

The remark, delivered in response to a supporter's question about whom Platner would work with in Washington if elected, captured the raw state of a Democratic Party increasingly at war with itself. Platner wasn't talking about a Republican. He was talking about a fellow Democrat, one who has spent recent weeks publicly challenging Platner's fitness for office.

The exchange is the latest in a feud that has grown personal, profane, and impossible for Democratic leaders to ignore.

What Platner said, and why--

At the town hall in southern Maine, a supporter asked Platner which senators he looked forward to working with in Washington. Platner framed the Senate as a place built on relationships and said he didn't want to go to the capital and "simply be nonfunctional."

Then he went further.

"I mean, as you can all probably tell, we got a lot of criticisms about the way this government functions. But in order for us to make it functional, we're going to have to do stuff. And you can't just go down there and be John Fetterman and just and just kind of just sort of be an a**hole."

Ex-girlfriend says Maine Democrat Graham Platner knew his tattoo's Nazi connection all along

Graham Platner told reporters he had no idea the skull-and-crossbones inked on his chest was a symbol of the Nazi SS. His ex-girlfriend says that's a lie, and that he used to call it by its German name.

Lyndsey Fifield, a 40-year-old Republican campaign worker from Virginia who dated Platner from 2013 to 2015, told The New York Times that the Democratic Maine Senate candidate referred to the tattoo as "my Totenkopf" and joked openly about its Nazi origins. The Totenkopf, a death's-head skull, is widely recognized as a symbol of the SS units responsible for the murder of six million Jews during the Holocaust.

Platner's campaign told The Times he "strongly disputes" Fifield's account. But her claims land at a moment when the candidate can least afford another credibility problem. Details of his extramarital sexts with roughly half a dozen women had already roiled his campaign over the weekend.

And the tattoo controversy now threatens to deepen the question that hangs over his entire candidacy: Does Graham Platner tell the truth? Answer:  NO.

Democrats rally behind Maine candidate Graham Platner despite sexting scandal

Graham Platner, the Democratic Senate candidate in Maine, showed up on Capitol Hill Tuesday to meet with party leaders, not to answer questions about reports that he sent sexually explicit text messages to multiple women early in his marriage, but to collect handshakes and reassurances that the party still has his back. He got both.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer met with Platner and afterward told reporters he stands by his endorsement. He did not, however, answer questions about whether the revelations concern him or whether he found Platner's explanations satisfactory. NBC News reported that Schumer simply dodged those inquiries and repeated his campaign line.

The pattern tells you everything. Reports emerged over the weekend that Platner's own wife privately alerted a campaign official that her husband had sent sexually explicit texts to other women. Not one Democratic senator has pulled support. And the candidate himself left the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee headquarters, after spending more than ninety minutes inside, without saying a single word to reporters shouting questions at him.

Schumer kept it short and vague when pressed by the Capitol Hill press corps.

"I endorsed Graham Platner. We're going to beat Susan Collins and take back the Senate."

That was the full extent of his public commentary on a scandal that, in any other cycle and involving any other party, would have triggered wall-to-wall cable coverage and editorial demands for accountability.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stood by Democrat Graham Platner on Tuesday even as reporters pressed him about the Maine candidate’s growing list of controversies. Schumer was asked point-blank whether he was satisfied with Platner’s explanations, but he did not really engage the questions head-on.

Instead, Schumer kept repeating the same message about the race in Maine. “I met with Graham Platner today, we’re going to beat [Sen.] Susan Collins and take back the Senate.”

The senator was asked again and again if he still supported Platner after the latest headlines. Reporters also asked whether Democrats were hurting their own credibility by backing Platner while attacking Texas Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton over similar kinds of scandal-driven baggage. Schumer did not answer those questions directly.

Navy SEAL who killed Bin Laden condemns Maine Democrat's resurfaced posts mocking wounded soldier

Robert O'Neill, the retired Navy SEAL credited with killing Osama bin Laden, called resurfaced social media posts attributed to Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner "completely barbaric", and challenged Democratic leaders in Congress to say something about it.

O'Neill spoke to Fox News Digital days after a deleted Reddit post resurfaced showing Platner, a combat veteran himself, apparently reacting to a viral video of a soldier wounded in a clash with Taliban fighters. The post attributed to Platner read: "Dumb motherf***** didn't deserve to live."

That quote, aimed at a fellow service member under enemy fire, has rocked Platner's Senate campaign and drawn sharp criticism from veterans and military figures. O'Neill did not mince words about what the post revealed.

Graham Platner’s deleted Reddit comments

Graham Platner’s since-deleted Reddit comments became a flashpoint during his Democratic primary campaign against Gov. Janet Mills for U.S. Senate, but they didn’t prevent him from effectively clinching the nomination after Mills withdrew her candidacy April 30.

Many of those individual comments have been reported on or featured in attack ads by both Mills and Sen. Susan Collins-aligned super PACs, but they represent just a handful of the roughly 2,000 that make up Platner’s Reddit footprint.

Now The Maine Monitor is presenting the full archive so people can read the comments more easily for themselves.

The collection spans more than a decade — from when Platner was ages 24 to 37 — and provides a rare glimpse into the thinking of a candidate at a time when he betrayed no political ambitions and could not have known how future voters might have viewed his online commentary.

He said he “became a communist” as he got older, criticized police officers and asked why Black people don’t tip. But perhaps the most discussed comment was from 2013, when Platner responded to a post titled “shorts that prevent you from being raped” by writing:

“Holy fuck, how about people just take some responsibility for themselves and not get so fucked up they wind up having sex with someone they don’t mean to? Men and women, you make a choice to consume enough of a substance to lose your self control. So if you don’t want to be in a comprising situation, act like an adult for fucks sake.”

Graham Platner's 'grassroots' Maine Senate campaign paid tens of thousands to firm that pays influencers to promote him

Democrat Graham Platner has built his Maine Senate campaign on the promise of grassroots authenticity, no corporate PACs, just ordinary people powering a populist challenge to Republican incumbent Susan Collins.

But his own campaign finance disclosures tell a different story. Since September, Platner has paid at least $36,437.94 to a Democratic consulting firm that maintains a stable of social media influencers who promote candidates and causes for pay, and at least one of those influencers has repeatedly urged his audience to donate to Platner without disclosing any financial connection.

The Washington Free Beacon reviewed Platner's FEC spending records and found the payments went to Be a Good Influence LLC, a Louisville, Kentucky-based firm commonly known as Good Influence. The company describes itself as "the trusted partner for measurable creator-led campaigns" and says it "bundles elite news and cause-focused online creators together to create a network effect" for its clients.

The gap between Platner's public image and his spending habits is the kind of thing voters in a purple state like Maine deserve to know about, and the kind of thing mainstream outlets have so far failed to report.

Platner built his campaign on the claim that he answers to ordinary people, not moneyed interests. His own FEC filings show he's paying a professional operation to manufacture the appearance of organic enthusiasm. If that's grassroots, the word has lost all meaning.
