Socialist wins Mayoral Primary in Providence, Rhode Island

NYC Mayor Mamdani hails socialist's Rhode Island primary win as proof Democrats are shifting left

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani seized on a 27-year-old democratic socialist's upset victory in the Providence mayoral primary to declare that Democratic voters nationwide are demanding the party embrace rent control and a harder progressive turn.

David Morales, a Rhode Island state representative backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders, defeated one-term Providence Mayor Brett Smiley in Wednesday night's Democratic primary, pulling roughly 54% of the vote to Smiley's 46%.

Morales ran on rent stabilization in a city where rents have climbed sharply since 2020. Smiley, 47, argued that rent control could discourage development. Voters sided with the socialist.
