Rare prehistoric shark relative caught in Florida

The waters of Florida are home to some of the best fishing in the country.

Anglers never know what they might find.

And a Florida fisherman was stunned to reel in this scary prehistoric monster.

Members of the University of North Florida’s Shark Biology program were fishing on the St. Mary’s River on the border with Georgia when they made a shocking find.

A student caught one of the critically endangered smalltooth sawfish after he felt it pulling on his line. After they studied it, it was released.

The smalltooth sawfish evolved from primitive shark species that have long been extinct.

Man in 50s taken to hospital; injuries not life-threatening

The man's injuries were not life-threatening and his leg likely won't have to be amputated.

This must have been on a private beach section as I believe no one can fish in the ocean at the Lake Worth beach unless they are in a boat or fishing from the Lake Worth Pier.

Lake Worth High graduate (class '60) Paul Darst sent this photo taken in 1937 of  his grandfather fishing at the beach.

I remember as a kid fishing off the Lake Worth beach, a time when there were not as many people inhabiting our city or even Florida for that matter. In the 1950's, there was about 2.7 million people in the entire state.  Now we have a little over 19 million. Back in those days, you knew most everyone in town. Fishing is no longer allowed at the beach.

We used to fish at what is now called Kreusler Park where no one ever went, tossing out our lines hoping to catch anything. In the evening, you would always see men and children dotting the shore with their lines and tackle boxes. This was back in the days when unique and beautiful shells also could be found, intact. We also fished off the old Lake Worth bridge but that was not near as much fun as fishing in the Atlantic.

Four Lake Worth anglers on team Penny-Less won the Southern Kingfish Association’s national championships held Nov. 9-10 in Biloxi, Miss., with a two-kingfish weight of more than 103 pounds.
