GOP senators confront former Biden pardon attorney over clemency push for Dylann Roof, federal death row inmates

Republican senators turned a confirmation hearing for acting Attorney General Todd Blanche into a sustained confrontation with the former Biden administration pardon attorney who recommended clemency for all 40 federal death row inmates, including the man who walked into a Charleston, South Carolina, church in 2015 and shot nine Black parishioners to death during Bible study.

Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri led the charge Thursday on Capitol Hill, pressing Elizabeth Oyer over a 73-page memorandum she authored in November 2024 that urged President Joe Biden to spare every inmate on the federal death row.

Democrats had called Oyer as their chief witness against Blanche's nomination. By the time Republicans finished questioning her, the witness they summoned had become the hearing's central liability.

The exchange, reported by Fox News Digital, laid bare a question that should trouble every American who believes victims matter more than their killers:

Hawley went straight at the most indefensible names on Oyer's list. Dylann Roof murdered nine parishioners at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston. Robert Bowers killed 11 Jewish worshipers at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev carried out the Boston Marathon bombing. Oyer recommended clemency for all three.

How did a senior Justice Department official produce a 73-page clemency recommendation that, according to a DOJ report cited during the hearing, devoted just three paragraphs to the grievances of victims' families?

The No Rogue Rulings Act, introduced by Representative Darrell Issa, seeks to limit the reach of lower court rulings and restore balance between the branches of government.

Legal scholars and experts argue that Congress has the power to rein in District Courts and restrict nationwide injunctions, providing a more effective solution than pursuing impeachment.

“It’s never been more obvious that parts of our federal judiciary have a major malfunction of judicial activism,” Issa said. “Practically every week, we see yet another federal judge issuing yet another nationwide injunction in yet another gambit to stop President Trump from exercising his Constitutional Article II powers and carrying out the policy agenda he promised the American people he would make a reality.”

The bill passed out of the House Judiciary Committee on a 14-9 vote.

Senator Josh Hawley (one of my top favorite senators) from Missouri took an authoritative stance on an issue during Thursday’s Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources hearing.

The discussion focused on the Biden administration’s decision to halt nearly a quarter of a million acres in Minnesota from mineral mining. After a sixteen-month review, the Department of Interior concluded that the land should be protected for two decades due to possible water contamination from mining.

Hawley started his questioning by inquiring Hall-Rivera about the importance of critical minerals to the nation’s energy security. After agreeing that the minerals are essential, he moved on to the current state of mineral refinement across the world. He discovered that current production stands as 68 percent of the world’s nickel from China; with 40 percent of copper, 59 percent of lithium, and 73 percent of cobalt also mined there.

Merrick Garland may soon face charges of lying to the Senate

Tuesday on FNC’s “Hannity,” Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) (one of my favorite Senators) accused the FBI of “infiltrating” churches and spying on Americans.

The "Empowering States to Deport Illegal Immigrants Act" would authorize state and local law enforcement officers to enforce certain federal immigration laws, and comes amid ongoing Republican claims that the Biden administration is refusing to secure the border.

The bill would effectively abrogate a 2012 Supreme Court case which significantly limited the ability for states to be involved in immigration enforcement. Instead, the bill would allow states to use their resources for immigration enforcement.

During this week's hearing, Sen. Josh Hawley(R-MO) spoke about military recruitment. One person he addressed his concerns with was Gen. Caroline Miller. Hawley asked Miller to explain a recent video post on Twitter about Anderson Air Force Base, in Guam who are reportedly forced to stop using pronouns on base. Hawley explained, "leaders there recently received an official email that prohibited them from using pronouns or descriptors like he/she, youngest/oldest, male or female, why is that? I mean what's going on?" Hawley questioned.
