Seattle mayor fires police chief after mass shooting failures, then faces backlash from racial justice groups

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson fired Police Chief Shon Barnes after a botched response to a deadly food festival shooting, and now faces organized protests from civil rights organizations that call the move racially motivated.

Barnes, 55, was out of town at a law enforcement conference in Dallas when gunfire tore through the Bite of Seattle food festival on a Sunday evening, killing three people and wounding four others, including a two-year-old boy.

The Seattle Police Department then waited roughly five hours before holding its first public briefing, issued statements containing factual errors, and never activated AlertSeattle, the city's emergency notification system, to warn residents that at least one armed suspect remained at large.

By Wednesday evening, Wilson had seen enough. Fox News reported that the mayor called Barnes into a meeting and asked him to resign. He refused. She fired him on the spot, just hours after the two had stood side by side at a silent vigil for the shooting victims.

By Thursday, a coalition of racial justice organizations, the NAACP, the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle, Byrd Barr Place, and Community Passageways, had organized a rally at city hall to protest the dismissal. Speakers cast Barnes's firing in explicitly racial terms.

Greenacres: Two women and Gunman dead

2 women, suspected gunman dead after shooting at Greenacres condominium complex

Two women and the suspected gunman are dead after a shooting in Greenacres on Monday morning, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

The shooting occurred just after 7 a.m. near the 500 block of Shady Pine Way at the Pine Ridge North 1 condominiums. When deputies arrived, they found one woman dead and another suffering from gunshot wounds.

The second woman was taken to the hospital, where she died from her injuries.

After deputies tried to make contact with the suspect inside his home, the PBSO SWAT team responded.

After executing a search warrant of the home, deputies say the suspect was found dead from a gunshot wound.

The sheriff's office says the two victims and the gunman knew each other.

At 6:47 p.m. Sunday, Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT) — 4:47 a.m. Eastern time in the U.S. — police heard reports of shots fired at a “Hanukkah by the Sea” celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney.

Two gunmen killed at least 16, including a ten-year-old and a Holocaust survivor, while an additional 38 were injured. Before most Americans were awake, a 43-year-old named Ahmed al Ahmed gained international renown by tackling and disarming one of the attackers despite being “riddled with bullets.”

Within 24 hours, two more were killed and nine injured in a mass shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, while famed director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele were murdered in their home, with their son Nick arrested Sunday evening and booked at 5:04 a.m. PT today.

If you were like me and away for the weekend, you likely found digging out even that handful of facts difficult. The world by midday Monday was already plunged into a cacophonous argument about the meaning of this extraordinary flurry of violence, with even the journalistic enterprises spending more time assigning blame than figuring out what happened.

“Of course, you know, there’s so much controversy happening in the United States right now with ICE, who are also wearing uniforms and wearing masks,” Dilanian told MSNOW’s Katy Tur. “And so there’s — you don’t know — people walking around with uniforms in an American city. There are some Americans that might object to that. And so apparently this shooting has happened.”

Man killed, woman hurt in Lake Worth Beach shooting

WFLX: "The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO) is investigating a double shooting and homicide in Lake Worth Beach.

Just after 7 p.m. on Saturday, deputies were called to the 1700 block of Tropical Drive in Lake Worth Beach.

When deputies arrived at the scene they found a man and woman with gunshot wounds.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and the woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

PBSO said the suspect and motive remain unknown at this time.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-458-TIPS."

Bodies are piling up on the streets of Chicago over Labor Day weekend – with 54 shot, including seven killed, as President Trump and Illinois Gov. Pritzker spar over sending the National Guard into the Windy City.

At least 32 separate shootings occurred in Chicago between Friday evening and noon on Monday, according to a review of police incident reports by ABC News.

Just hours after Trump posted a message on Truth Social on Saturday criticizing Pritzker’s handling of crime in the city, at least seven people were shot around 11:10 p.m. in Bronzeville. All of the people are expected to be okay.

Trump called the governor “weak and pathetic” for dismissing the need for a National Guard presence in the Windy City in the social media post.

“National Guard troops or any kind of troops on the streets of an American city don’t belong unless there is an insurrection, unless there is truly an emergency – and there is not,” Pritzker said of the situation in Chicago.

He also vowed to sue the Trump administration if troops are indeed deployed.

6 Shot, 1 Stabbed at NYC Indian Day Parade

At least six people were shot and one person slashed in separate incidents following the West Indian Day Parade in Brooklyn on Monday, according to the NYPD.

The violence unfolded across four locations in Crown Heights between late afternoon and early evening, while parade crowds were still dispersing.

Authorities have released limited details as the investigation remains active, and it is not yet clear how or if the incidents may be connected.

The NYPD has not said whether the incidents were connected.

Police have not identified the victims or the person taken into custody. No charges have been announced.

The family of Yvette Hoffman, the wife of Minnesota lawmaker John Hoffman, confirms to FOX 9 Saturday night she is awake and alert while recovering from being shot multiple times.

John and Yvette Hoffman were both shot multiple times early Saturday morning at their Champlin home. Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were both shot and killed at their Brooklyn Park home Saturday morning. Authorities say the suspect in both shootings is 57-year-old Vance Boelter.

Boelter is not in custody and a manhunt is ongoing.

Authorities say Hortman and Hoffman were targeted in Saturday’s shootings. Gov. Tim Walz said Saturday morning Hortman died, while Hoffman was able to get out of surgery and was recovering.

The FBI is offering a $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Vance Boelter.

LAKE WORTH BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — A fifth person is now behind bars, nearly two years after a deadly Lake Worth Beach shooting.

Sheriff's detectives say five armed people met outside a house in Lake Worth Beach and began shooting, firing dozens of rounds in the span of just 10 seconds.

"I was actually in the shower. I had just walked back inside from letting my dog out, not like 15 minutes before it happened, and I remember hearing the gunshots," said Maya Smith, a resident who lives near the scene of the shooting.

Smith lives just a couple of houses away from where a house at 409 2nd Avenue South in Lake Worth Beach was riddled with bullets the night of July 12, 2023.

"It's crazy. I thought this was a safe neighborhood," she said.

Deputies responded to Lake Worth Beach at 9:40 p.m. on Saturday after receiving calls of shots fired. The sheriff’s office said that it received anonymous calls that large groups of juveniles were running from the upper parking lot of Benny’s on the Beach and shopping plaza while the shots were heard.

The sheriff’s office said when its deputies arrived at the beach, multiple gun shell casings were located, and no victims were located.

Anyone with information related to the incident, including cell phone video and/or photographs, is asked to contact the sheriff’s office or Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers.
