Speaker Johnson raises $500,000 to oppose Virginia Democrats' redistricting ballot measure

House Speaker Mike Johnson traveled to Great Falls, Virginia, last Saturday to headline a rally against a Democratic-backed ballot measure that Republicans say would let the state's ruling party redraw all 11 congressional districts mid-decade, transforming a narrow 6-5 Democratic edge into a lopsided 10-1 supermajority.

After the rally, Johnson attended a private fundraiser and pulled in $500,000 to fight the amendment, the Washington Examiner reported.

The special election is set for April 21. The stakes, by any honest accounting, are enormous, not just for Virginia voters but for control of the U.S. House itself.

Former Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin joined Johnson on stage in Great Falls. The two framed the amendment as a brazen power grab designed to lock Republicans out of representation in a state that, even in 2024, gave Democratic nominee Kamala Harris only a roughly 5-point margin over President Donald Trump.

Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters at House Republicans' annual policy retreat in Miami that the push to impose Sharia law in America is a genuine constitutional threat, steering a controversy over Rep. Andy Ogles' blunt social media post toward a broader and more substantive debate about assimilation and the rule of law.

Ogles posted on X that "Muslims don't belong in American society," a statement that drew immediate fire from Democrats and forced Johnson to address the matter publicly.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said Sunday that he is “confident” he will have enough support from Republicans in the House conference to end the partial government shutdown by Tuesday.

In an interview with NBC News’s “Meet the Press,” Johnson said the House will vote to reopen the government “at least by Tuesday.”

“We have a logistical challenge of getting everyone in town, and because of the conversation I had with Hakeem Jeffries, I know that we’ve got to pass a rule and probably do this mostly on our own,” Johnson said, referring to the minority leader as he looked to blame Democrats for the second shutdown of President Donald Trump’s second administration, which began early Saturday.

Democrats have a problem with Trump administration’s immigration policies, including the Department of Homeland Security. The department houses U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

In their counterproposal to fund the government, Congressional Democrats insist on spending $200 billion on health care for illegal aliens -- FUNDED BY THE AMERICAN TAXPAYER. They also want to restore $500 million in funding to left-wing news outlets like NPR and to take away Republicans' $50 billion fund for rural hospitals.

In the SAME counterproposal, Democrats are demanding a reversal of President Trump's cuts to wasteful, woke overseas spending, including millions of dollars for outrageous, leftist priorities like $4 million for "LGBTQI+ Democracy Grants in the Balkans."

The contrast between Republicans and Democrats could not be clearer.

Republicans vote to keep the government open and pay our troops, while Democrats continue to hold the government hostage, making unserious partisan demands only to appease their radical, Far-Left base.

As the Democrat Government Shutdown continues, Speaker Johnson has joined dozens of TV and radio shows and hosted numerous press conferences in the U.S. Capitol to discuss the harmful impacts of the shutdown and urge Senate Democrats to vote to reopen the government.

Request for more funds for Security

WH Confirms $58 Million Ask for Security After Kirk Assassination

With Democrats reportedly talking about obstructing a continuing resolution and forcing a government shutdown by Oct. 1, the White House has requested $58 million from Congress to strengthen security for the executive and judicial branches following the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

A White House official confirmed to Newsmax the amount and the request to be included as part of upcoming government funding deal.

The funding would expand protection for Supreme Court justices and increase resources for the U.S. Marshals Service, officials said. The request comes ahead of a Sept. 30 government funding deadline, raising pressure on Congress to act quickly.

Mike Johnson has pressed for enhanced security measures for Congress and warned about social media-fueled calls for violence.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) backed out of an event with Donald Trump on Friday as Congress scrambled to pass a spending bill to stop a government shutdown.

Johnson had been scheduled to appear at a Turning Point USA event Friday with Trump and Tucker Carlson, but Johnson's plans were changed by the spending fight, which has placed Johnson's job in jeopardy.

After three days of legislative drama, Johnson passed a bill Friday to keep the government open - but the bill importantly did not include Trump's demands to raise the debt limit.

Earlier in the week, Trump had killed Johnson's first spending bill, a bloated 1,500-page compromise with Democrats that sparked ire from the right while raising doubts about Johnson's future. Trump urged Johnson to get a better deal, which Trump said must include a suspension of the debt limit.

The final deal passed 366-34 and funds the government until March, with $100 billion in disaster aid for hurricane victims and $10 billion for farmers. While smaller than Johnson's original bill, it does not include the debt limit suspension that Trump wanted.

The House on Wednesday rejected a motion calling for Republican Speaker Mike Johnson’s ouster, rebuffing an effort by one of the GOP leader’s most-vocal critics, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia.

The 359-43 vote on a motion to table Greene’s measure required the help of Democrats, given the speaker’s narrow majority. The vote could quiet calls for Johnson’s removal among conservative hardliners, who have been angry about his support of a $95 billion foreign aid package that passed last month.

Johnson’s divided conference was evident on Wednesday as 10 Republicans sided with Greene, while 196 opposed her effort. Additionally, 163 Democrats voted to table Greene’s motion, effectively protecting the speaker. Twenty-eight members from both parties either didn’t vote or voted present. [CNN]

House GOP leaders on Wednesday introduced a new border security bill designed to appease conservatives who are up in arms that Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) foreign aid package excluded tougher measures to battle migration.

Johnson announced Wednesday morning that he was plowing ahead with sending aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan despite outspoken opposition from hard-line Republicans, many of whom were incensed that his plan excluded border security.

For months, the Speaker had said that any assistance for Kyiv must be paired with legislation to address the situation at the southern border.

Speaker Johnson said that the border security bill would move under a separate procedural rule from the Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan measures.
