Darline Graham Nordone enters South Carolina Senate race to carry on her brother's legacy

Darline Graham Nordone, the late Sen. Lindsey Graham's sister and his appointed interim successor, announced Monday she will seek the Republican nomination for a full Senate term, with President Trump's endorsement already in hand.

Nordone made the announcement during a Fox News interview with Sean Hannity, ending days of speculation about whether she would move from caretaker to candidate. "I've made a decision. I'm in," she said.

The filing window for the August 11 special Republican primary opens Tuesday, and Nordone will enter a field that already includes two South Carolina congressmen.

The announcement caps a rapid sequence of events that began with Graham's sudden death on July 11. The 71-year-old senator died from a suspected aortic dissection after traveling to the NATO leaders summit in Turkey and meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv hours before he fell ill. He had been favored to win a fifth Senate term in November.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, a close Trump ally, appointed Nordone to serve out the final months of Graham's current term. She was sworn in on July 14, becoming the first woman to represent South Carolina in the United States Senate. The appointment came just 48 hours after Graham's passing.

Eight Apache helicopter pilots from the South Carolina National Guard had their suspensions lifted Friday, hours after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth publicly promised to intervene, following a low-altitude flyover along the South Carolina coast on July Fourth that drew cheers from beachgoers and a bureaucratic crackdown from their own chain of command.

The reversal marks the second time in recent months that Hegseth has personally overridden a military disciplinary process involving Apache pilots, ABC News reported. The pattern raises a pointed question about military culture in 2026: when pilots do exactly the kind of thing the public loves, fly attack helicopters over a patriotic holiday crowd, why does the default institutional response look like punishment?

The pilots, all members of the South Carolina National Guard's Alpha 1-151 Attack Battalion, flew the "Salute from the Shore" route from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to Beaufort, North Carolina, on Independence Day. Video of the low-altitude pass circulated online and drew widespread attention.

Shortly after the flight, the South Carolina National Guard temporarily suspended all eight pilots. The Guard issued a press release Thursday characterizing the move as a "routine administrative measure whenever a flight profile is under review." In a post on X, the Guard added that the suspension was "not a disciplinary action" and said the soldiers were still taking part in "regular daily duties in a non-flying capacity."

The town saw an unexpected controversy erupt when the head of its Beautification Committee defied the mayor’s request to remove a Nativity scene from a public space, sparking a debate over religious expression and municipal authority, as Breitbart reports.

The showdown began just after Thanksgiving, when Kimberly Byrd and her committee dressed up the town’s new marketplace for Christmas in a classic, small-town style — all on their own dime.

Part of Byrd’s festive setup included a Nativity scene placed in the public parking area near the decorated market. That decision quickly drew scrutiny from Mayor Miko Pickett, who claimed the religious imagery on government-controlled property could alienate some community members and possibly cross legal lines.

Court Precedent Could Favor Local Tradition.

While Mayor Pickett is likely trying to keep the city in legal clear waters, the 1984 Supreme Court case Lynch v. Donnelly offers some helpful context.

A police video has emerged showing a South Carolina Democrat running for governor getting arrested in his underwear and going on an insane tirade that must be seen to be believed.

As WCBD reported, 53-year-old William “Mullins” McLeod was arrested back on May 15 after he was found “yelling at the top of his lungs” while walking in downtown Charleston. At the time of his arrest, He was wearing only underwear and shoes.

The Charleston Police Department released video of the arrest on August 12 following a Freedom of Information request. The video, which is approximately one hour long, shows McLeod screaming at the top of his lungs, hurling the n-word, and even comparing himself to God and Superman at various points.

“I’m one of the most just humans to ever walk this soil,” he says at one point while sitting in the police car. “I’m Superman, godd*mn it.”

To date, the DMV has positively identified 1,896 who asked to be registered when applying for driver’s licenses but weren’t added to the rolls.

A judge has denied a request by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of South Carolina to compel South Carolina’s Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) and State Election Commission to reopen voter registration in the state and add thousands of eligible 17-year-olds to the voter rolls ahead of the upcoming presidential election.

The ruling, issued on Oct. 25 by Judge Daniel Coble of the Richland County Court of Common Pleas, was handed down in response to a lawsuit brought by the advocacy group, which sought emergency relief to correct what it argued was a systemic error by the SCDMV that prevented eligible 17-year-olds from being registered to vote.

Republican Wins Mayor Race in Charleston for First Time Since 1877

In the recent mayoral runoff election in Charleston, former South Carolina Republican Representative William Cogswell emerged victorious, marking the first time the office has been held by a Republican since 1877.

Unofficial results from the South Carolina Election Commission indicate that Cogswell secured approximately 51 percent of the vote, surpassing incumbent John Tecklenburg, who received about 48 percent.

Upon receiving all the votes, Cogswell secured 13,930 out of 27,291 votes, surpassing the threshold to prevent a recount.

That includes a number of rifles — exactly how many was redacted in a response to a records request by The Greenville News — and it includes renovations to the capital-punishment facility, stainless steel sheeting, ammunition, and ballistic partitions, according to invoices obtained through the Freedom of Information Act.”

Breitbart, reporting on the situation, adds that “There are 35 men on death row in the state and the last execution occurred in 2011, when Jeffrey Motts chose the death chamber instead of moving forward with the appeals process, according to the AP. He was convicted of strangling his cellmate to death while serving a life sentence for murder.”
