Only in Lake Worth

We haven't done a Mess of the Week in awhile---there are just way too many of them in Lake Worth.  But this abandoned and boarded up house on Akron got a surprise.

Some wise guy decided to be cute--steal an Ace Hardware cart and place it on this roof. This has to be a first.

1528 Cochran Drive - Still a Mess

Comment Up

This is a lovely little addition to our city and is situated right around the corner from Commissioner Maxwell whose own property is pristine. What a shame that neighbors have had to look at this for so long. Code enforcement seems to be cleaning up some areas that have been eyesores but this one has been around for eight years.

Isn't it funny that not one question at the debate was asked about the slum and blight in our city. This is the most important issue that faces us right now.  Get everyone to clean up their places--pick up trash, paint their houses, pressure clean their walks, driveways and fences, mow their grass and prune their shrubs, etc. and crime will go down. Let's take some pride in where we live. Property values will go up and people will want to move here.

How long has this been going on?  Since 2008.

Manuel Gonzalez bought the property in July 2014 for $7,500 and later put it up for sale asking $65,000.  It sold again just five months ago for $28,000. The land value is $44,445.

Mess of the Weeeeek - Again, again & again

This is what some numbskull from permitting allowed to happen in our neighborhood. Whoever helped this property owner on how to go around our laws should be fired on the spot. Even if this property was in an industrial zoning, this would NOT be allowed.

Come on Lake Worth--you are part of the problem for some of the slum and blight.

The Mess Gets Worse - The very bad joke

Comment Up

All I can say is, "Thanks, City of Lake Worth."  You allowed an abomination to happen in our neighborhood and the unsightly mess continues to get worse at 535 Wright Drive. You enacted all sorts of new codes but why then do things like this happen?

Yesterday, the white van was moved on to the cement slab but the grass where it used to be parked is now nothing but dirt.  Now another truck is parked on the front lawn and I use the word "lawn" loosely.  And this IS the FRONT of the house no matter what BS the city wants to feed us.  The owner appears to be repairing a vehicle behind his fence and has erected a tent.  He doesn't want anyone to see what he's doing. A tent might be appropriate as this is nothing but a circus.

Isn't government supposed to protect us? This entire street is going "down" and it will continue as long as situations like this are allowed to occur.

Mess of the week - 535 Wright Drive

Comment Up

This gets Mess of the Week two weeks in a row. This is how every front yard in Lake Worth should look, right? It belongs in the industrial park but they wouldn't allow it there.
And what in the hell is this?
It says that it is a construction site and they will prosecute trespassers?
It is an Outdoor Standard Permit Posting Unit--
(Home Depot's description)
What are they constructing?
Do they have valuable equipment in that shed that they use on their jobs?

The vehicles on grass have been cited and a case has been entered. The permit box on the fence, yes, it is allowed, especially if the property owner has permit reviews. This makes the permit available to the inspector without the owner having to be home. Thank you.

Two Houses on the 500 block of Wright Drive

Comment Up

This one has been a menace for years...owners have changed several times. In July 2006, this small house consisting of 1,281 s.f. was actually bought for $232,000...it soon went into foreclosure. Banks were accepting bogus appraisals and loaning money to anyone and their grandmother. It was sold several times once it was foreclosed upon and a new owner bought it last year. Now this new owner has installed a modular unit right across his front lawn. Later in the day, you will see about three trucks parking there and they think nothing of parking on the "grass." It has been cited by Code Enforcement.

Right down the street, this house has been newly landscaped and has a new owner. His house looks pristine perfect and hopefully other owners on this once very nice street will follow his example. I told the owner that I wanted to recommend his house as House of the Month to ROLO.

Mess of the Week revisited

Comment Up

Directly on the lake on Lake Osborne Drive, this house used to be beautiful.  Look what happened to it once it got in foreclosure and the bank took it back. It has been an on-going problem for over two years.  The yard is nothing but weeds. The renters sell personal items off their yard (constant unpermitted yard sales)  and have been trying to sell this boat for a year that is either parked on the front yard or under this questionable portable canopy on the driveway. Cars park all over the side of the property, on the public rights of way and the sidewalk.

Owner according to PAPA: ONEWEST BANK FSB, 2900 ESPERANZA CROSSING, AUSTIN , TX 78758-3658

This bank was acquired by Ocwen Financial last summer in a $2.53 billion dollar deal so who knows if this property is still owned by Onewest.

There is no rental license regarding this property. And as of Monday, there was no open code file which is a real mystery. All kinds of people coming and going trashing the neighborhood.

Junks being junked in Lake Worth

Comment Up

We have talked before about this abandoned vehicle at 419 3rd Avenue South. The licensed tag is expired and it was dumped on our street last year. It was yellow tagged on January 28, 2014 after being featured on Lynn's little bit of Trivia on January 20. The owner had 72 hours to get it off the streets. The PBSO says that this is a city code problem and that the city has a relationship with towing companies...it is their responsibility to remove the car. This all might be true but please refer to the County and City codes below.

We have become a dumping ground for junk cars. The City has all the tools in its possession to now clean up the slum, the blight and the streets.

The vehicle has 4 flat tires.
Cited by the city on 1-28-14

COUNTY (f) Whenever any Law Enforcement Officer receives a report of or finds a vehicle that is without a current license tag or inspection sticker standing on the public right-of-way, the owner will be notified to remove the vehicle. After 24 hours the officer will treat it as an abandoned vehicle and remove it immediately. (Ord. No. 01-9, §§ 1, 2, 3-20-01)

CITY Inoperable motor vehicle. A vehicle which cannot be driven upon the public streets for reason including but not limited to being unlicensed, wrecked, abandoned, in a state of disrepair, or incapable of being moved under its own power. Motor vehicles. Except as provided for by Florida Statute or other City of Lake Worth ordinance, no inoperative or unlicensed motor vehicle shall be parked, kept, or stored on any premises. (Ord. Messes of the Week

Close to downtown Publix
Even though it is Christmas, the messes continue as before. It's just another day in paradise.
Construction and other debris shall not be placed out for collection at any time, except in accordance with the provisions of section 12-34

Rubbish and garbage.
(1) Accumulation of rubbish or garbage. All exterior property and premises, and the interior of every structure, shall be free from any accumulation of rubbish or garbage.

This car has been parked on our city street with an expired tag since April. It has a couple of flat tires. The owner puts air in them when they deflate too much.  Why does the city ignore this?

Mess of the Week

Comment Up

This business will remain nameless as the store manager is now attempting to make a daily effort to clean up the mess. He is appalled and can't even understand why people who visit his store ignore the trash receptacle right outside the front door.  They even change oil in the parking lot and leave the empty containers there.  Shoplifting is a big problem and many of the customers are entitlement babies. The government is complicit because when you get something for nothing you respect nothing.

While I was exiting my vehicle, a woman took her merchandise out of the plastic bag and threw the bag on the ground.  I picked it up and said, "Ma'am, you dropped your bag," and handed it back to her.

Anti-social behavior is everywhere and that's what we are dealing with.  Some of it is a culture thing but primarily it is the lack of respect that so many have towards others, their property and themselves. Let's tell these people, "Not in my city, no more."

Wrecked vehicle left on Lake Worth public street

Comment Up
Just one more thing to blight the neighborhood

Not only is it blighted property we have to deal with here in lake Worth that breeds crime, but junked cars parked on our city streets. We seem to be a dumping ground for just about everything.

Abandoned property, public, means all tangible personal property which does not have an identifiable owner and which has been disposed on public property in a wrecked, inoperative, or partially dismantled condition or which has no apparent intrinsic value to the rightful owner.  It's subjective. This car does have a tag.

Abandoned/inoperable vehicle is any vehicle which is located on public property, or private property and not within an enclosed building, and which has any of its wheels or tires dismantled or deflated, is missing any part or valid registration required by law for travel on public streets, or is in such condition as to render it incapable of normal operation under its own power, including being supported above existing grade level by such means as concrete blocks, jacks, hoists, or similar devices. Included in this definition is any wrecked, inoperative or partially dismantled motor vehicle.

The story is that the owner abandoned the vehicle and walked away some three weeks ago and the car has been in the exact same position ever since.

Why doesn't the PBSO or someone in charge at city hall call Motor Vehicles, find out who the owner is, if this Toyota is registered to him and ask him about this car.

Messes of the Week - revisited

Comment Up
Both these houses are on Wright Drive
These people have been told but they keep sticking it in our eye.
They are in the "selling mattresses illegally business,"
working out of their home, no license,
blighting the neighborhood. What in the hell do they care?
They are not fined and no one does anything about it.
Cars parked all over the "lawn."
This house is a total wreck and those who reside there treat it like a dump.
At least the weeds are mowed down.
We have 25? ordinances to enforce code?
Can we take back our neighborhoods?

Knowing that our Code Department is in limbo, this is being featured only because it is in our downtown. We have had to drive by and see it for at least a week now...Right on S. Federal Highway adjacent to Wells Fargo.

Finally got off of Wright Drive as there are so many "messes" in Lake Worth

This is a property we have  been looking at way too long.

This property is 721 and 723 2nd Avenue South, boarded up and abandoned.

It fits right in with the huge pot holes and the deplorable condition of this downtown street, an artery that many of us use.

Mess of the Week

Comment Up
I can't get off Wright Drive

Why code enforcement will not address these blighted properties is a mystery to us all. Slum and blight is an escalating problem in our city and the city commission wonders why developers won't touch the city with a ten foot pole. The politicos give us some song and dance that it is 20 more feet in our downtown that will make the difference. They are allowing more affordable housing including rentals--affordable means that eventually more slum and blight could come to our city. We hear about 20 new ordinances that have been passed in code that are there to supposedly protect us, but the city, in all four corners, has properties that look like this.

What has our City Commission done to prevent the decline of our city?...trips to Daytona Beach to learn how to cope? Will the citizens be getting a report from this expense involving Maxwell's beloved League of Cities? This Mess is in your District, Vice Mayor.
