As I sat at the dining table with my 2nd cup of coffee this morning, I thought about Scotland, the land of lochs and glens, and its vote tomorrow to break away from England and become an independent country. I thought immediately of my grandfather who was born in Blantyre and what he would think. I didn't have to dwell on that thought--I knew the answer...he would vote for independence.
He was the most amazing and independent man, one who migrated to the United States when he was 21 going through Ellis Island, to a country where he had no friends or family. His first job was sweeping floors at Thomas Edison's factory in West Orange, New Jersey, a place where he rubbed elbows with the greatest inventor who changed the world forever. Later, through hard work and dedication, he opened his own manufacturing plant in Newark, New Jersey and by the time he was 35, he had reached that "dream." He was living the American dream, in his new country that he loved where he was a citizen and one that gave him opportunity, in a country that boasts 5 million with Scottish ancestry, more than all of Scotland put together.
I believe that he would have some trouble accepting Scotland's social welfare point of view but with independence, Scotland would have closer ties with other Scandinavian countries, especially Norway where his wife, my grandmother, was born. Initial plans have already been drawn up for an electricity super-grid between Scotland and Norway.
My grandfather thought of his Scottish roots with pride. His Scottish shillelagh was near his favorite chair along with his books on Scotland that I have to this day. A map of Scotland adorned his room. Every year he visited his homeland, a beautiful country. He would be 124 years old today, and if he were here he would say, "Vote for Independence, don't be afraid; rely on yourself; remember Robert the Bruce--rely on the wildcard--Scotland's citizens and its great assets especially its oil.

Quote of the Day - Jim DeMint
“Whether you’re looking at businesses,
organizations or the government itself, the real innovations and solutions tend
to come from the ground up. America was built that way. We were
built from the ground up. We were a very decentralized country from the very
beginning. The whole point of the Constitution was to keep us that way, with a
very limited federal government and a vibrant, competitive system between the
states.”~ Jim DeMint, President of the Heritage Foundation,
a research and educational institution—a think tank—whose mission is to formulate and promote conservative public policies based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense.

Quote from the Past - David Allan Highet - Think Big

Think Big!
~David Allan Highet, former National Cabinet Minister, New Zealand
This was a phrase for an economic strategy sponsored by the Prime Minister of New Zealand Robert Muldoon (1975-1984) and his New Zealand National Party government in the early 1980s.
No, Greg Rice didn't coin this phrase but look what he has achieved by believing it.
I'm not talking about the big stumbles and the poor decisions of the past that have cost us big-time. I am not talking about big political egos that have us momentarily dysfunctional. I am using the expression now as a reminder to all those who are focused on the immediate rather than the long-term. In order to achieve great things, you have to think and dream big. You have to believe.
We did that in Lake Worth when we built our own Reverse Osmosis plant, and we can continue to do that. We did it when we finally decided to re-build our Casino. Planning & Zoning continues to believe it as it designs our City, keeping its small town feel and uniqueness. We are on our way and in a few more years you will see the difference from the plans that have been formulated, implemented and are being achieved to make our city sustainable, desirable and a city that will attract more and more tourism, businesses and homeowners.
We have invested in our future. We've got it. We're on our way. We're thinking big.

Independent thinkers

Scenes such as this are always intriguing to me.
The photo captures a thought. One lone and independent Ibis on a different wire than all of the other birds, therefore looking and seeing the horizon in a totally different perspective.
Independent thinkers are what made this country great. Most assuredly, when we think like everyone else is thinking, the best that we can expect is to achieve what they’ve already achieved.
