Integrity of High-Rise buildings in Palm Beach County to be analyzed

Palm Beach County Commissioners discussed Inspections of High Rises

I watched the Commission Meeting and was impressed with the thoughtful approach all took to develop rules regarding inspections of our older and higher buildings in Palm Beach County with half of them built before 1980.

No one really knows what happened to the 12 story building in Surfside; it is all speculation at this point. Consequently, the Palm Beach County Commission will continue to analyze the state of the high-rises here and send a letter to owners to inspect their buildings

County commissioners said they want to follow Miami-Dade and Broward counties’ footsteps to require regular inspections of high-rise buildings, likely more often than 40 years. But they will let a working group — made up of the League of Cities, municipal building officials, fire marshals and engineers — hash out details and options such as which buildings should be regularly inspected and how often.

PB County to discuss Re-Certification Process

Palm Beach County leaders to discuss recertification process in today

“Whether the county government does it as a whole, or each municipality handles it in their own way, we are here to help to make sure what happened in Surfside, never happens in Palm Beach County Florida,” said Dave Kerner.

The Board of County Commissioners meetings are broadca​st live on TV Channel 20 and rebroadcast the evening of the meeting beginning at 6 p.m. If the meeting continues beyond 6 p.m., the rebroadcast is presented on Channel 20 the following day, beginning at 9 a.m.
