Pet Peeves - What is yours?

Comment Up
Grrr, when I am driving my car, I have a Triple A personality and use all sorts of profanity, words some of which have never been heard by any human. I am not sure who bugs me the most--drivers speeding and weaving in and out of traffic with a death wish (mine) or those driving like turtles 10 miles under the speed limit. When the light changes, they take 5 hours to step on the gas.

Let's hear it--
What is your pet peeve?

Right about now, we probably have more things to gripe about than usual--taxes going up 7%, special assessments, the possibility of paying for downtown parking, shortening the hours that we can park downtown, garbage going up, you name it. So, Let's hear your peeve.

Same Sex Marriages now recognized by government

Comment Up
Obama and Justice Department say it can no longer defend marriage only being between a man and a woman.

Another law on the books is meaningless as the Obama administration says it will no longer defend the constitutionality of a federal law that bans recognition of same-sex marriage.

Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina

Shrimp Boats in Mount Pleasant

The other day I was researching the top places to live in the United States and what do I find? Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina on the list. So this blog is for Donna Ross, former member of our CRA and Tom McGow, a former top blogger here and expert "Photo-Shopper" who moved to Mt. Pleasant. This is to let them know that they are not forgotten and wishing them both a Happy Thanksgiving.

Donna and Tom chose a town that is rated the 100th best place to live in the United States according to CNN Money. I wonder where Lake Worth falls? According to what demographic reports you read, Mount Pleasant is 92% white with nearly 76% of the housing units owner occupied. The majority of residents are 58.1% who fall in the ages from 25 to 64.

This appealing town has three main things going for it: miles of beach, a moderate climate, and strong schools.

Less than 10 minutes from Charleston, Mount Pleasant is big in shrimping, though cheaper imported Asian seafood has hurt the industry.

Residents revel in community events such as the "Blessing of the Fleet" -- an annual spring festival in which everyone enjoys fresh-caught shrimp and live music. --J.S.

In June, Mt. Pleasant received another award. The National Civil League honored Mount Pleasant with The All America City designation. "To qualify for the award, communities submit a detailed application listing three examples of successful community-based problem-solving. This year’s winners addressed such issues as homelessness, obesity, economic development, low-income housing, improving schools and diversity and inclusion."

Ok, you guys--you promised to send photos.

Lake Worth man Marries in Massachusetts

Donald Cavanaugh, newly appointed member of Lake Worth's Community Relations Board, got married on June 7.

According to Wikipedia: Same-sex marriage in the U.S. state of Massachusetts began on May 17, 2004, as a result of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts ruling in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health that it was unconstitutional under the Massachusetts constitution to allow only heterosexual couples to marry.

Massachusetts became the sixth jurisdiction in the world (after the Netherlands, Belgium, Ontario, British Columbia, and Quebec) to legalize same-sex marriage. It was the first U.S. state to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Thought for the Day

"Unless we shut down the economy, we need fossil fuels. More efficient light bulbs, energy-saving appliances, cars with higher gas mileage may all dampen energy use. But offsetting these savings will be more people (391 million vs. 305 million), more households (147 million vs. 113 million), more vehicles (297 million vs. 231 million) and a bigger economy (almost double in size).

Although wind, solar and biomass are assumed to grow as much as 10 times faster than overall energy use, they provide only 11 percent of supply in 2035, up from 5 percent in 2008."

Gulfstream Current - Hurricane Season

Gulfstream Current around Mexico, Florida and Cuba

Researchers at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Mississippi have crunched some numbers and warn that passing hurricanes (the season begins on June1), and the NOAA prediction of May 27th that it will be “active to extremely active”, could snap undersea oil pipelines in ways never before estimated, according to ABC News.

Capitalism and Socialism

The Wisegeek has a good definition of Capitalism and Socialism:

Capitalism is an economic system where resources — whether monetary or otherwise — are privately owned, whereas socialism is a system where goods are owned by the state or the public. Capitalism is founded on the belief that competition brings out the best in people.

Socialism, on the other hand, believes that cooperation is the best way for people to coexist. The main difference between these two economic systems is the distribution and earning of wealth. In capitalism, everyone works for his own wealth, while in socialism everyone works for wealth which is distributed equally to everyone.

BP Oil Spill -

"BP has said it will honor 'legitimate' claims from people and businesses seeking compensation from disruption caused by the spill. But since there are likely to be many disputed claims ("This is America -- come on," BP chief executive Tony Hayward told the Times of London on Wednesday). "Having your company's name inextricably linked to a disaster can't help when a jury begins assigning damages," he said in a Washington Time article. Can you believe this guy?

B P is trying to distance itself from some of the responsibility and has said that Transocean Ltd. and its subcontractors including Haliburton need to share a big part of the responsibility as it was their equipment.

As the spill is expected to hit Florida shores by the end of the week, BP gave our State a $25 million grant on Tuesday.

Portofino's Restaurant on Singer Island

In spite of some residents in this City as well as the Lake Worth Herald always crying about our beach merchants not paying market rent, (they are operating in a dilapidated building--does that matter?) at least the City of Lake Worth is looking out for our merchants unlike the City of Rivera Beach. We care about our business owners at the beach--their long-time existence and contribution to our community and attracting tourism to the Lake Worth beach.

Portofino’s Restaurant situated right smack in the center of the Singer Island Ocean Mall has been there as long as many of our current beach merchants have been at our Casino. Catalfumo is building a 60,000 square foot mall with shops and restaurants as well as a small 150 room hotel. The City of Riviera Beach voted on this and the developer, Catalfumo, blocked the owner’s access to his own restaurant two years ago. Having 12 years left to go on his Lease, he, therefore, finally stopped paying rent this past September, and now his restaurant has closed for good. Thank God we now have sensible Commissioners in our City that would never allow something like this to happen.

Portofino’s was one of my favorite restaurants when I lived there...always serving great food and wine at affordable prices. It was a beach restaurant, not fancy, but it sure had some ambiance. It was a very popular restaurant. Riviera Beach did not give a hoot that Portofino’s was there for all those years.

Mr. Kedmi, the owner, should move to Lake Worth where 99.9% of our people do care and where our present Commission does too.
