Sober Home on Sunset Drive
Palm Beach County Lyft driver recounts scary passenger experience
We have numerous sober homes in Lake Worth. This is a story about one of them and a Lyft driver who picked up a couple on Sunset Drive in Lake Worth on Independence Day.The driver got a text message but couldn't read it while driving. Once she had the opportunity to read it, she was given instructions as to where to drop off these people...that's when it got "scary" for the Lyft driver.

Not only do we have many sober homes in our city but we have many who have been discarded from them who are on the streets and living homeless. Those trying to recover from drug addiction are prevalent and the homeless problem is escalating.
The owner of this sober home owns many in Lake Worth as well as in Palm Beach County and will not return phone calls or e-mails. This particular house has been a big problem for the ROLO neighborhood.

I think this home has changed hands again, New crop of people, the white vans dropping off and picking and beater cars etc. But two cars in particular 1 is in the drive way with no tags the other is a red car that moves back and forth across the street, a guy works on it but it is leaking "stuff" all of the road. I am at my wits end with the city as they can't do anything, my only recourse is per the Sheriff's Dept and Code enforcement is to call them when there are violations which I do. I have become "that neighbor". If anyone else would like to assist me in contacting code enforcement you can do so anonymously here is the link. You don't get sober at Sober Homes
Andy Amoroso, who sits on the Palm Beach County League of Cities, told NPR that because some 75 percent of those coming to Florida for treatment are not from the state, loved ones should beware.
"My
message would be, stop sending your children and your loved ones to
South Florida because we're sending them back in body bags," Amoroso
said.
Read about the Sober Homes and the "sobering" experience by one gal who went from flophouse to flophouse. Sick people come here with all good intent to get off their addictions just to be scammed.
It has been reported to me that a new sober home will be on Lake Osborne Drive about two blocks from where I live. The owner has been renovating for months. I certainly hope this is not true as it will be within one/half block of a school bus stop.

Sober Home bill was signed by Governor
Palm Beach State Attorney Dave Aronberg said, “You will see a lot of the illegal marketing that drives people down
here from other places will start to dry up — the free plane tickets and
exaggerated claims, you’ll see far less than that. That
could mean you’ll see fewer out-of-state patients than you see today,
where 75 percent of all the individuals in recovery are from out of
state.”
Dave Aronberg appeared on the Megyn Kelly show last Sunday. After watching this show, no parent will be sending their kids to South Florida for recovery.

Vacation Rentals - Suit in Miami
If you didn't have it in your code of ordinances before 2011, you can't ban vacation rentals, so says the suit in Miami.
This is the same year that the city of Lake Worth refers to when it talks about mooting our Heights referendum that restricted heights in our downtown. The lawsuit in Miami was brought on by some homeowners and Airbnb joined the suit. It largely centers around the commission’s decision and a state law passed in 2011 which prohibits cities and municipalities from banning vacation rental homes unless those laws already existed.
Miami outlawed Airbnb as an illegal nuisance but the petitioners say "not so," and even are citing First Amendment rights. Basically they say that you should be able to do anything you want with your own property (property rights) and screw city codes. All of these rentals escalated since the Sober Homes scam came into existence.

Bill Hager on Sober Homes
Rep. Bill Hager keeps all of his constituents informed by sending out a newsletter. All elected officials should do this. This is a snippet out of his letter that has a special interest for us here in Lake Worth. Bill Hager in the House is the go-to guy if you have any questions on Sober Homes. Jeff Clemens is the one in the Senate.
Bill Hager says, "House Bill 807 relates to sober homes; an issue I have been working on for more than a decade. I know that this is a priority bill for our residents, and I’m pleased to say it has one more committee stop before it goes to the House Floor."
The Senate companion bill has also unanimously passed 2 committees. The bill cracks down on unethical marketing and referral practices that enable the bad operators.

Sober Home on Hillcrest
This is the same street where our Vice Mayor lives--a little bit of trivia.

Car was stolen from this sober home last
night! This is more of a vent. So this home has changed operators
several times. In the past 6 months there have been two robberies there
where PBSO has asked us to look at our home surveillance video to see
if we could see the crimes being committed which we captured. I called
the sober task force today just over it, but was left sort of deflated
as it was a v/m and it took a lot of ringing before that even picked up.
Hope I hear back. Seriously considering erecting a billboard/sign
in my front yard that says Sober homes are not welcome in this family
community! The nail in the coffin was the "victim" said yeah this is
supposed to be a Christian run home and he just rents to anybody! I
don't begrudge anyone their hard work for their sobriety but these slum
lords who run their homes as a boarding house with a revolving door
should be shut down.

Sober Home owner arrested for patient brokering
Back in May, I wrote a blog on Living Right Sober Home on N B Street in Lake Worth adjacent to the Lake Worth Towers. I got a comment on this blog last night and the author called me an "idiot" and said she would prefer to live next door to a Sober Home than my "ugly judgements (sic)." I hear this frequently when people disagree with me. The writer said that Steve and Melissa are caring and loving people.
I just decided to have a cup of coffee and read the morning newspaper and lo and behold, there was an article on the owners of Living Right. The Palm Beach County Task force just made its 20th arrest and charged one of the owners, Stephen Johnson, who happens to own Living Right, with patient brokering. His bail will be set today.

Christopher McVoy answers Constitutent on Sober Homes issue
There is a woman on Facebook, a non-supporter of Christopher McVoy, who said the following and used another blogger's videos who also supports McVoy's opponent:
"It means that while other commissioners did nothing but wring their hands, the city attorney did nothing but make excuses for inaction, and city departments that could have worked together instead operated in silos, McVoy at least made PBCFR, PBSO, utility management, city attorney, city manager, William Waters, and Code Enforcement personnel meet together in the same room to establish a cohesive plan of action. Because of this meeting that he facilitated, these departments are now sharing information that will ensure that sober homes have rental/business licenses and the city knows where they are, and so does PBSO.
He is also pulling together a series of ordinances similar to those enacted in other cities [Click here] that will establish a moratorium on new sober homes.
Christopher is not afraid to stand up for residents, unlike our other commissioners who are MIA on this issue. McVoy does not call the Palm Beach Post every time he helps his constituents, or pat himself on the back in public meetings like some others do so often. He simply does his job."

Sober Home Crack-Down
The FBI and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office deputies and others pounded on doors at 5 a.m. to raid a sober home at 1501 N. Federal Hwy.
Amoroso said in an interview that Chatman was among the worst operators and referred to the upsurge in heroin-related overdose deaths among recovering addicts, often sent here from out-of-state for treatment.
“But at the end of the day, many people don’t want to send their children and loved ones to South Florida because the sober homes business plan doesn’t work because we are sending their kids back in body bags.”

Chief Assistant State Attorney to speak in Lake Worth on Sober Homes
All this politically correct stuff. Now they don't want us to call them "Sober Homes." We are to call them "Group Homes" per Scott Maxwell who was in Washington, D.C. last week. He invited Debbie Wasserman-Schultz to tour our city to see our Sober Home situation first-hand.
The community event will be held at the Scottish Rite on Monday. The first presidential debate is on the same night but not until 9pm.

Scott Maxwell invites Debbie Wasserman-Schultz to tour Lake Worth
Scott Maxwell gave a report on his Washington D.C. trip of last week where his main focus was the Sober Home problem. He said that he met with a few congress folks who he had not met previously. One was Debbie Wasserman-Schultz.
Apparently she was not that familiar with our out of control Sober Home situation in Lake worth with the 41 deaths and 150 overdoses over the past six months.
Scott said that "her eyes almost bugged out of her head." He has invited her to come and take a tour of the city.
