National Park Service reverses course, grants permit for Memorial Day Mass inside cemetery

A lawsuit was filed

National Park Service has granted the permit for the Knights of Columbus to host a Memorial Day Mass inside a national cemetery, according to a May 23 news release from legal organization First Liberty.

“The Knights are thrilled that they will be able to exercise their religious beliefs and keep this honorable tradition alive,” First Liberty Senior Counsel Roger Byron stated in the news release. “We appreciate the tremendous support of Governor Youngkin and Attorney General Miyares in this case.”

The Knights have hosted a Memorial Day Mass inside Poplar Grove National Cemetery in Petersburg, Virginia, every year since the 1960s.

National Park Service under the Biden administration halted this tradition in 2023, when it denied the Knights the permit to host the Mass within the cemetery, citing a policy change that prohibited “demonstrations,” which included non-committal religious services, inside the cemetery.

The Knights and the Park Service reached an agreement and the lawsuit was dropped.

Prior to his being deployed overseas, Christopher Walters rented out a space to keep his motorcycle at Reiman’s Harley-Davidson.

While he was away, his wife Jaime, understandably, had trouble staying on top of the rental payments. With 2 youngsters to care for, she was a bit overwhelmed with all the financial obligations she encountered with Christopher deployed.

She received an over-due letter from the company. She explained why the contracted payment was overdue and sent in a check. And when Dennis read her explanation, he declined to take her money

Remembering

Today's Memorial Day Service at Pinecrest Cemetery

The service was wonderful and the crowd was good considering it was not advertised anywhere. Others in attendance were the entire Lake Worth Commission and Mayor Betty Resch spoke; The Women's Club laid a wreath; one of my old friends, Joe Matthews from American Legion Post 47 spoke and Father Quesnel Delvard from Sacred Heart gave the Invocation and Benediction.

Due to COVID, there will not be a keynote speaker; however, the mayor will present the service with a short message and a 5 minute speech on what Memorial Day means to her.

Memorial Day-- Honoring those in the U.S. Military who gave their lives

Memorial Day (originally known as Decoration Day) is a federal holiday in the United States for honoring and mourning the military personnel who have died in the performance of their military duties while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, November 19, 1863 who gave a loving tribute to our Military who died in the Civil War:

"...that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

Biden Administration In Hot Water For Stopping ‘Rolling Thunder’ Motorcycle Parade

Defense officials have denied veterans advocates permission to stage their annual Memorial Day motorcycle rally at the Pentagon parking lot, saying the crowd size poses a potential public health threat given the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The “Rolling to Remember” event is scheduled for May 30. It is the successor to the annual Rolling Thunder motorcycle ride that was held for 32 years to draw attention to American service members still missing in action from wars overseas.

Boy Scouts Banned

Boy Scouts banned from planting American flags on veterans' graves for Memorial Day due to coronavirus

The U.S. National Cemetery Administration, the federal agency within the VA that operates the sites that because of the "national emergency, VA national cemeteries will not be hosting public Memorial Day events," and that includes "mass placement of gravesite flags."

Memorial Day Service at Pinecrest

We were all there in solemn respect this morning at Pinecrest Cemetery. All the veteran graves were decorated by Scouts Troop 204, photo bottom right.

Mayor Pam Triolo spoke to the small crowd gathered to honor and remember all those who had died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. There was one veteran there who had fought in World War II. All veterans of all wars were recognized.

The Keynote speaker was Col. Robert Ames, USAF (retired). His speech was not only reverent but patriotic. He mentioned that the former Soviet union had 30,000 (sounds like a lot) U.S. prisoners of war captured by the Germans that had been transferred to the Soviet Union after World War II that were not returned to us. He further said that this has happened in every war since and the release of captured Americans had not been sought by our government. (I wish I had taken notes for accuracy here) He even brought up Benghazi.

Following the Colonel's speech, there was the playing of Taps, A benediction by Father Delvard of Sacred Heart and the retirement of colors.

Following are a few photos from yesterday's joint service with Vogel-Lee Post 47 American Legion, Auxiliary, SAL, Riders and Boy and Girl Scouts. I prayed that the weather would be good and as Father Quesnel Delvard of Sacred Heart Church said, "He heard you."

Mayor Pam Triolo gave a wonderful speech (she always does). Commissioners Scott Maxwell and Herman Robinson attended the service. Boy Scout Troop 204 decorated the graves with American flags.

Memorial Day

Every year at Pinecrest Cemetery, I sit next to this veteran's grave who served in World War I. He did not die in the service to our country (that is what Memorial Day signifies) but he is remembered, as all Veterans are, on this day as well as Veterans Day.
