Rubio Announces Release of American Former Ballerina From Russian Prison

"Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Thursday that ballerina Ksenia Karelina was released from a Russian prison and is on her way back to the U.S. (She is now home)

Karelina, a U.S.-Russian dual national, was visiting her family but was detained in 2024 on treason charges. (She sent $51.80 to Razom, a New York City-based nonprofit organization that sends humanitarian assistance to Ukraine). She was released as part of a prisoner exchange (a man who was a spy), according to the State Department, The Hill reported.

American Ksenia Karelina is back home to the United States. "She was wrongfully detained by Russia for over a year and President Trumpsecured her release,” Rubio said in a post on X.

“@POTUS will continue to work for the release of ALL Americans,” he added.

Americans to be freed from Russia in Prisoner Swap

Russia to free Gershkovich and Whelan in major prisoner swap

Three US citizens imprisoned in Russia, including Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, are expected to be released later today, under a prisoner exchange deal.

Gershkovich, US Marine veteran Paul Whelan, and Russian-American radio journalist Alsu Kurmasheva will be released under the deal agreed by the Biden administration, a senior US official confirmed.

Others are believed to be part of the deal. The exchange has not occurred yet but is expected later today.

There has been speculation for days of a major swap between various countries which was heightened after several dissidents and journalists jailed in Russia were moved from their prison cells to unknown locations.
