PAULY - RIP

Comment Up
Photo taken on 9-9-13
without his feathers but still oh so proud

We have lost respect for so many things and our wildlife is just one of them. Pauly blew in here in 2005 and has been a member of our community for all these years. We were so proud to have him and he seemed happy too with all the attention and affection he got...a special addition to the Lakeside Point Gardens family.

A rotten SOB hit-and-run driver drove his car into him and killed him...he never had a chance by someone who has lost his humanity.

Strutting his Stuff

Pauly, our resident Peacock, has a morning ritual after he flies down from his Pine tree. He walks towards the south-east end of our property and spreads his feathers, prancing around in circles, occasionally squawking. Another peacock some distance away can be heard answering him. They just have never connected. He has been one lonely bird for seven years and the feral cats are his only companions.

Pauly the Peacock - Lakeside Point Gardens

Starting to lose his feathers
All should be gone by end of August
He really needs a girlfriend...it's been 5 years
since he blew in one stormy day.

  • West Palm Beach veterinary clinic for birds and non-traditional pets says,
I have raised peacocks for several years, the males shed their tail once a year, they shed a few feather's at a time until all the the plumage (Fancy feathers) is gone. They begin to regrow the feathers each spring before the breeding season. If they did not, they would be more vulnerable to predators, as the tail makes it a bit harder to fly, though under stress the peacock will shed the feathers to escape a hold on his tail. Also if the feathers were not renewed each year the damage caused by day to day life would make a poorer showing each year. Body feathers shed a few at a time all year long, and as a general rule each feather is replaced annually, (Only one pair of flight feathers at a time). Also of note, the display of the tail is not just the fanning we all know, but includes a shiver that causes a rattle as feather shafts strike each other.

To Sharp Witted Dads Everywhere

Comment Up

I took my Dad, who is a senior citizen, to downtown Lake Worth the other day to have lunch at one of the local eateries We decided to sit outside at one of the restaurants to watch the sights and "people-watch" as we dined. I noticed he was watching a young person, possibly a teenager, sitting next to him.

The teenager had spiked hair in all different colors - green, red, orange, and blue. My Dad kept staring at her. The teenager kept looking and would find my Dad staring every time.

When the teenager finally had enough, she sarcastically asked: "What's the matter old man, never done anything wild in your life?"

Knowing my Dad, I quickly swallowed my food so that I would not choke on his response; I knew he would have a good one!

In classic style he responded without batting an eyelid …………

"Got stoned once and screwed a peacock. I was just wondering if you were my daughter."

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY

It's not only the Birds

Now HUNDREDS more birds fall from the sky in Kentucky and Louisiana and tens of THOUSANDS of dead fish wash ashore while the government is saying it was probably fireworks" or cold weather but that excuse is being challenged by some as "for the birds.
  • 500 carcasses collected after dying in Louisiana on Monday
  • As many as 5,000 birds dead in Arkansas on New Year's Eve
  • Kentucky woman reports dozens of dead birds in her yard
  • Up to 100,000 dead and dying drum fish washed up in Arkansas River
  • Tens of thousands of dead fish in Chesapeake Bay in Maryland
  • 8,000 little birds fall from the sky in Italy
"The thousands of blackbirds that plummeted to their deaths in front of horrified New Year revelers in Arkansas may have been sent into their deadly spirals by fireworks, raining onto rooftops and into fields as Beebe residents enjoyed the midnight celebrations." Fireworks always worry me here because of our peacock. He sleeps in a pine tree right by the trailer court on 6th Avenue South and those people are non-stop with fireworks. On New Year's Eve the crackling and pops and noise finally stopped around 1am but bright and early the next morning they started up again. This practice is probably against Ordinance but we don't see the Sheriff patrolling that much out this way.

But the above doesn't explain why more than "500 birds dropped dead from the sky in Louisiana last Monday or why a Kentucky woman found dozens of dead birds in her yard. And just a 100 miles away from Beebe's mass bird kill, at least 83,000 dead and dying fish washed ashore, and possibly as many as 100,000."

Is there something else going on?

He's Baaaaack!!

Comment Up

"Our" peacock returned the other day. He was somewhat bedraggled and did not want to show himself for a few days until he prettied himself up. This is the first shot I managed to get since his return. He has lost all his large feathers naturally but you can see one of his tail feathers is bent. His feet were all dirty and he appeared to be very tired. Today he looks healthy and happy.

Missing Peacock

"Our" peacock is missing. He has lived here for 5 years and now has not been seen for the past 5 days. If anyone has spotted him, please get in touch with me. He has now lost his feathers. It is the end of mating season. There are a lot of worried people in our community.

Someone said they saw a couple of men with a net trying to capture one on the other side of Lake Osborne. We hope that he has not befallen any harm as there are all sorts of predators in Lake Worth.

Our peacock was lonely but led a stress free life here. He had a couple of cats as friends and they would sit together during the day, eat from the same bowl and drink from the same container. These cats were his only companions. I remember one of the cats when he first spotted this big bird. He sat there looking up in awe knowing that he had no chance against this bird. He succumbed and decided it was better to be friends.

This summer he started to strut a little farther and began to sleep at night in a different Pine tree right above the Trailer Park on 6th Avenue South. He squawked a lot this year. We worry some idiot killed him for food.
