August 1 New Tariffs may be implemented

North American Trade Faces New Threats

Trump’s hardball tactics and looming tariff threats could significantly shift the landscape of the U.S.-Canada trade.

At a Glance

Trump threatens a 35% tariff on Canadian goods by August 1.
Canada maintains a 25% counter-tariff amid tense negotiations.
U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum have doubled to 50%.
Trade talks are active but face potential escalation.

Trump’s Tariff Strategy and Its Implications:

The Trump administration has once again taken a firm stance on trade, with President Trump announcing a potential 35% tariff on Canadian goods if an agreement isn’t reached by August 1.

This aggressive move follows a series of tariffs targeting not only Canada but also Mexico, the EU, and others, with the intention of securing better trade terms for the U.S. The administration has already doubled tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50%.

With the U.S. market being a crucial destination for over three-quarters of Canadian exports, the stakes are high. The U.S. administration is leveraging its market size to extract concessions, aiming to protect domestic industries and reduce trade deficits. As of 2024, the U.S. had a trade deficit of approximately $63.3 billion with Canada, indicating that imports from Canada exceeded exports.

This is no longer about Democrats and Republicans. This is quite literally those of us who care about democracy against those who are trying to replace it with an autocracy.

I would guess that you are taking about Democrats, anonymous @12:40. President Trump was elected by 77 million people ...this is not a dictatorship although Democrats definitely desire one party rule.

Only one guy tried to overturn a free and fair election.

Only one guy is shaking down the media and America's great institutions of higher education.

Only one guy boasted that he would be a dictator.

Only one guy renditioning U.S. residents halfway around the world to 3rd world countries.

Only one man has dispatched the U.S. military into the streets of America.

You've picked your team, Lynn. That's super clear.

Throughout history, Americans who love democracy have always vanquished those who threaten it.

This time will be no different.

You can call it a Democracy, or you can call it a Representative Republic, but I would call it an Administration that has run amok; and you, Lynn, are part of the problem. This isn't going to end well!

It's going to end very well and we all will be better off under Trump's policies of prosperity.

@5:38...you have no idea what democracy is.

As I said, this is not a democracy, it's a representative republic. A democracy is a more or less chaotic situation, which is what we are living through right now. Furthermore, Trump's health is not going to hold out 3 and one half more years, unless he seriously curtails his lifestyle, and you can put that in the bank.

I never said we were a democracy. Next, at the pace Trump is going to make America great, it's amazing he has so much stamina.

Stamina has nothing to do with it. You have to take care of your legs.

Who saw and reported on his legs? Who exactly saw Trump's legs?
