Beachfront and Golf Course Development Proposal

Commissioner McVoy shares letter from Law firm, Lewis, Longman & Walker P.A.

Regarding our beach

McVoy said that "It seems another commissioner (Mimi May) was wrong when she asserted that ‘any charter referenda would have nothing to do with proposals at the beach.’"

LLW represents the developer and they suggest referendum language in support of the Unsolicited Proposal submitted to the City on January 16, 2025, for the redevelopment of the City’s beachfront and golf course properties.

Lewis, Longman & Walker is requesting the following be on the agenda on the September 2 meeting:

1. Shall the City of Lake Worth Beach be permitted to enter into a 99-year lease over Cityowned property east of the A1A roadway, to permit the development of a hotel and infrastructure at the beachfront and casino property?
2. Shall the City of Lake Worth Beach be permitted to enter into a 99-year lease over Cityowned property west of A-1-A roadway to permit the development of a hotel and infrastructure at the golf course property?

If the Commission accepts the proposal in a contract, the Charter first must be modified to a longer lease term.

This is on the Agenda for the 9-2-25 meeting under New Business B to be voted on at the March 2026 election.

Read the letter

As I was unclear about what Commissioner McVoy had said about Commissioner May, he sent a text of explanation:

Sent from my iPhon Ok, finally getting back. I guess I did not write very clearly. In past meetings, Comm May has expressed that any charter amendments that the Commission would put on a ballot, ‘would not be related [specifically] to the Copperline/Horizon project.’ I was very skeptical of that assertion when I heard it. The letter that I fwded from the attorney for Copperline seemed to make it very clear that amendments, referenda, etc to be put on the March 2026 ballot would *exactly* be for the Copperline project. In my mind, that confirmed my earlier skepticism.

Commissioner Term Limits

Swamp Life Runs Deep in South Florida as Boynton Beach Considers Extending Their Own Terms

Well, it seems that the Boynton Beach Commission wants to do the same thing that the Lake Worth Commission achieved regarding term limits.

Boynton already has three year terms so our city probably decided that was a great idea and our voters agreed. But Boynton is considering  amending its city charter where Residents would vote on and decide if a commissioner who has served their allowable two terms (6 years) should be able to run for mayor without sitting out a cycle. If elected, the commissioner could serve an additional two terms, meaning they could serve on the commission for 12 years instead of 6.

So what happens if the mayor wants to go back and serve as a commissioner without sitting a term out? You've heard of "forever" stamps so we could be on the verge of "forever" officials who never go away as local municipalities change their charter for their own benefit. Everyone knows that a ballot initiative usually passes.

Palm Beach County Commissioners want to extend their terms

Palm Beach County Commission to workshop extending their terms

Despite the public voting overwhelmingly in 2002 to term limit county commissioners, this Tuesday, the issue will be “workshopped” to get commissioners another four-year term.

The workshop includes adding four years so that each commissioner can serve twelve consecutive years.

Commissioners can only serve two consecutive terms for eight years currently.

Trump's Lawyers to File a Motion that is unbelievable!

Trump’s Lawyers Will File Unprecedented Motion To Extend His Term

Trump’s lawyers, who just successfully defeated the libs in an impeachment trial, have begun drafting a motion to extend the President’s term by three years. The motion, which is unprecedented but perfectly legal under Article 3 Section 5 of the US Constitution, has to be filed directly with the Supreme Court.

Term Limits - Draining the Swamp

When our governor, Ron DeSantis was still a U.S. Congressman, he introduced a constitutional amendment to limit the terms of members of Congress to three terms in the House and two terms in the Senate. This is the same proposal that has been endorsed by President Donald Trump as part of his “drain the swamp agenda.”

Rick Scott is now a Senator from Florida and supports the amendment to end corruption and power through longevity.

Lake Worth Commission - Working less for more?

Ever since this commission gave themselves a big raise at the end of 2016 and beginning of 2017 in the 2nd reading, they are meeting less...that's a fact. AND, ever since the voters gave them three year terms that they wanted so badly, they are meeting less. Why is that? They didn't need voters for their big raises, only their politically incorrect votes from the dais like three year terms. They have the voters right where they want them.  Put it on a referendum and it usually always passes as they know that the people generally trust their elected officials.

What they gave themselves nearly two years ago--
Ordinance No. 2017-03 - First Reading. Raise the compensation for elected officials as follows:
  • Increase the Commissioners’ annual salary to $24,500 (formerly $14,500). This is a 68.9% increase
  • Increase the Mayor’s salary to $29,500 (formerly $15,500). This is a 90.32% increase;
  •  - Includes a car allowance of $500 per month which brings the mayor's salary up to $35,500 and the commissioners' salary to $30,500.
  •  - Includes participation in the City’s 401a retirement plan (the city manager and department directors currently participate through ICMA); and/or
  • City staff recommended continuation of the current health insurance benefits and furnishing the communication devices (or in lieu of the devices, a $100 per month total stipend if the elected official chooses to furnish his or her own devices).
If you notice January 2019 meetings, there is only one scheduled on January 15.  This is following suit to several months last year where they only had one general meeting.

3 year terms win by 55%

City of Lake Worth - Question

Other than this blog and one robo call from Gary Antieau against 3 year terms, it passed this time. There was not one group with the will to raise the money to help defeat this referendum. So much damage can be done in just one year...three is unimaginable particularly with a developer backed commission. We get the elected officials that we deserve when people don't get involved.

It's definitely time for term limits. Two, three year terms would be perfect.

Vote No on 3 Year Terms

Everyone on the present dais with the exception of Commissioner Christopher McVoy, want you to vote in three year terms for them so that they can be less involved with the public than ever before. How often do you hear from your district commissioner in this part-time job during their present two year term? Rarely?  Never? And then they have the audacity to vote themselves huge raises.

Take that in your soup and eat it--

Vote NO on 3 year terms

Election is March 14 involving two commission districts

Read Kevin D. Thompson's article on the six candidates who seek office in District 2 and District 4. All candidates believe that code and crime need to be addressed, a no-brainer.

Until slum, blight and crime are significantly reduced and no immediate solutions are reached, our city will continue to be a challenge.

Vote NO on 3 Year Terms

We voted for this once and the voters overwhelmingly voted it down by 68%. Let's stop kicking this bad idea down the road again and vote NO on March 14.

Vote NO on three Year Terms

It was nearly a decade ago when three year terms lost by a landslide in Lake Worth.  We had  three lazy commissioners back then. Below are the particulars on that election.

Citizens Come First, Political Action Committee, was formed in Palm Beach County on December 26, 2007. It has subsequently closed.

Our first campaign was for the defeat of three ballot issues voted on by 3 out of the 5 City Commissioners in Lake Worth and placed on the January 29, 2008 ballot:

1. Three year Commission terms:......NO (68%) YES (32%)

2. Eliminate run-off elections:......... NO (67%) YES (33%)

3. Residency requirement for
Police & Fire Chiefs:..............NO (49.76%) YES (50.24%)

Because of the confusing ballot language of Item 3 (we wanted our chiefs to reside in the City by Charter), it lost by 21 votes. It is moot now because Fire Rescue is in PB County.

We encourage you to VOTE NO once again on March 14.
