The Suwannee River is also a short distance from Chiefland along U.S. Highway 19. The Suwannee River's waters run for almost 20 miles to the Gulf of Mexico, offering great fishing opportunities for both fresh and salt water anglers.

The one-day event began in 1954, as the City of Chiefland wrapped up the completion of new sidewalks and streets.
From a Watermelon Queen to a watermelon spitting contest, Florida Hometown Democracy was there. And why wouldn't they be? This is just another part of beautiful Florida that they want to protect as does its residents.
