Tonight's Workshop on Development Regulations

Tonight at 6pm the city commission has scheduled a Workshop on Land Development Regulations, Zoning, and future land use maps. Also, they have scheduled discussion on height limits in the city charter.

Commissioner John Szerdi first brought this forward after the heights referendum, in our commercial downtown, passed. He wants to make height allowances more uniform with the FLUM, the Charter and LDR's, wanting to protect the neighborhoods. I thought that was what the Planning & Zoning board had been doing for the past three years until this commission changed the Comprehensive Plan heights in our downtown and then changed out the Planning board thus prompting a petition!

They want to create an Historic Hotel District, a Downtown Historic District (we already have that) and an Historic Dixie Highway District. ??? Who put the creation of historic districts on the agenda? What are the advantages and disadvantages of creating more historic districts?  Perhaps we will find out tonight. We are an old town, but besides City Hall that is in the downtown district, is there much, if any, architecture on Dixie Highway to protect?

BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION TO HAVE THIS WORKSHOP:
On April 2, 2013, the Commission had discussion regarding height limits. Discussion on the issue included a request to create a draft ordinance to make height allowances more uniform with the Future Land Use Map, Charter, and Land Development Regulations in order to be more consistent with the Charter. Additionally, to look into creating a Historic Hotel, Historic Downtown, and Historic Dixie Highway Districts. During the discussion, the Commission requested this issue be scheduled to the April 9, 2013, work session.

The mural on the building was historic we made them get rid of it. That was when we didn't want murals.
