It was always a horrible idea in 2006 when Nadine Burns first brought up the idea to move the elections to November. We spoke against it at City Hall but the 3 to 2 refused to listen to our arguments. Retha Lowe, Nadine Burns and Dave Vespo voted Yea with Dave saying, "Let the people vote." This was the January 16, 2007 meeting.
The logic was, all Presidential elections are in November, why not Lake Worth's too? It won at the polls by 53.6% of the vote in March 2007. And the result of this was, we had Jeff Clemens as Mayor for 2 years and 8 months. This was the very same night that Paul Boyer got fired at 12:10 a.m. initiated by Nadine Burns.
I would guess that all candidates who had to campaign during the hot months for this past November election will agree to this change. On top of that, a lot of our citizens are not in residence and it is harder to raise money.
Susan Bucher says that if cities have their elections in March, they will save money because some of the tasks she performs won't have to be repeated. Because of the added costs of local elections, our Commission will be making a proposal to move our elections back to March at the next Commission meeting. It is under New Business.
This would be a great thing. Now all they have to do is convince the voters. That might be more difficult. Click here for the Backup.
It was a mistake to move our elections in the first place.Changing our elections back to March makes sense for all of the reasons mentioned in the article.
ReplyDeleteP.S. When Dave Vespo said"Let the people vote",he said it very mockingly. He was making fun of the citizens, because we had asked the council numerous times in the past to let the people of Lake Worth vote on serious issues (Like our beach ).David Vespo enjoyed spitting on the citizens of Lake worth almost as much as Nadine Burns (the garbage can queen ) did.
