Michael Bennet enters the 2020 presidential race, Swalwell becomes 17th candidate to qualify for first Democratic debate.(Can't wait for that one...he polled 1% in 3 polls)
- U.S. Senator Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) announced that he was running for president of the United States on Thursday. He is the seventh sitting U.S. senator to enter the race and the second official from Colorado.
- Bennet was first appointed to the Senate in 2009 by Gov. Bill Ritter (D) to replace Ken Salazar (D) after Salazar became Secretary of the Interior for President Barack Obama (D). Bennet won election to a full term in 2010, defeating Rep. Ken Buck (R) by less than 2 percentage points in the general election. Bennet was re-elected in 2016.
- There are now 22 notable Democratic elected officials and public figures in the race, surpassing the limit of 20 candidates who can participate in the first Democratic primary debate. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) qualified via polling this week, bringing the list of qualified candidates up to 17.
