Lake Worth Beach Parking

At Monday night's workshop on parking rates at our beach, various options were discussed. It was mentioned (this happens every year), that our beach is not making money and we run a deficit. For the up coming budget year, they showed a deficit of $367,007 because of the yearly $500,000 that included interest that we agreed to pay back to ourselves for the $6 million loan to rebuild the casino and put $100,000 a year into Reserves. If you recall, the money was borrowed from our Water Fund ($4 mil) and our Self-Insurance Fund ($2 mil).

To make a long story short, our commissioners who have treated our beach park as a commercial enterprise, had a consensus to raise our parking fee by $1 or a total of $3 an hour. The vote was 5/0. Note, they only needed to make up a shortfall of  $367,007for the projected deficit which would have been achieved by raising parking by only .50 cents an hour.

When I was a young woman, I went to the beach every weekend and stayed for 5 hours at a crack. Parking at Lake Worth beach then was .25 cents for five hours or .05 cents an hour. At the inflationary rate through all these years, the parking rate would be less than $2.00 an hour in 2018.

In Kreusler Park directly to the north, parking is $2.00 an hour.

  1. AS CAN BE SEEN BY THE EXORBITANT RATES AT ALMOST ALL THE BEACH PARKS IN THE LIST, POLITICIANS ARE GOOD AT SENDING MONEY THEY DON'T HAVE AND THEN BAILING THEMSELVES OUT BY GOUGING THE BEACHGOERS.
SIMPLE PLEASURES LIKE SPENDING A DAY AT THE OCEAN ARE SULLIED BY THESE DRUNKEN SAILORS MASKING AS RESPONSIBLE STEWARDS OF PUBLIC FUNDS.

  2. What a joke those clowns are. They should all be embarrassed of themselves for saying an doing this to the citizens. Yet they have no problem taking huge salaries and benefits for themselves from the taxpayers. Hypocrisy and ineffective government at its best from these clowns. Vote them all out! What was that slogan Bill used to say about vote out the bums!

  5. Well, if they raise it to $3, people will all park at Kreusler Park instead as it will be cheaper.

  6. Right, it might be cheaper to use Uber to the beach and back. The city is only digging their own grave with their greed and ineffectiveness!
